Asylum Street Spakers play at Southgate House
Friday, February 02, 2007
You may not want to take the kiddies to the Southgate House to see the Asylum Street Spankers, but rest assured that at least a portion of their show will be dedicated to songs about and for children.
The Spankers' appearance comes hot on the heels of the release of its first children's record, "Mommy Says No!"
Extras
"The idea of doing a children's album has come up several times through the years," said vocalist Christina Marrs. "It was just something unusual for us to do.
"Being an adult-oriented band, it was challenging to do something outside our normal sex-and-drugs repertoire."
Coming up with the tunes, however, wasn't much of a problem.
"I tend to do well when given a project to do," Marrs said. "Having a theme and purpose was really motivating. Having something specific gave me a focus."
Given that it's still a Spankers record, though, makes it suitable for all ages.
"It's not what you might typically think of as a children's record," she said. "As a mother, I know how kids like to play the same things over and over gain, so we really wanted to create something that would make parents suicidal.
"So there are probably some songs on there that will appeal to parents more than their children.
"We tried hard not to talk down to them. The songs I wrote come from my own experience as a parent, songs that happen to be about kids or written from a kid's perspective."
