Formation flying to fill skies over Middletown
Friday, May 02, 2008
Small planes fly over Middletown's Hook Field all the time, but next weekend, bunches of planes will fly in formation for the first of several air shows this year.
The first is the RV Aircraft Show. This does not mean flying Winnebagos, as in Mel Brooks' "Spaceballs," but light aircraft custom designed to handle just such special maneuvers.
Extras
It's not a full scale air show, but a clinic for the pilots to shore up their flying skills. But flights are free and open to the public, said Rich Bevis, spokesman for Hook Field.
On Saturday, smaller groups of planes, numbering about four, will fly, and on Sunday, larger groups of up to 40 will fly in formation.
Asked what the appeal of the RVs is, pilot Greg Reese explained, "The number one thing is the performance. These go up to 200 miles per hour. They are built well and they pull weight well."
What separates the RV from a more conventional prop plane like a Cessna is its bubble canopy design that gives it greater maneuverability.
Other planned events include:
June 12-15: Aeronca Fly-in.
July 25-27: Radio controlled jets.
Sept. 20-21: "Wings of Freedom" full scale air show.
