A new business here aims to use the power of flotation and sensory isolation to enhance mental and physical well being.

TAO Float Loft, which opened late last year at 7334 Tylers Corner Boulevard, uses two massive isolation pods shipped from England and 1,200 pounds of Epsom salt in each for isolated flotation sessions to create a weightless, distraction-free, sensory deprivation effect.

The zero gravity and Epsom salt combine to promote tension release and create a healing force, with the salts acting as an anti-inflammatory and detoxification measure, according to owner Dylan Brown, of West Chester.

“It’s like your own private Dead Sea is what a lot of people call it,” Brown said.

Sessions are 60 minutes ($59) or 90 minutes ($69) long. One hour in an isolation pod is equal to four hours of deep sleep, an especially useful effect for those with insomnia, he said.

The benefits of the introspective, womb-like experience are “profound” from anyone from 18 to their late 80s and may be used to counter anxiety and depression, Brown said.

“There’s a psychological clarity when you float,” he said. “It literally … is a reset for the mind and body.”

The flotation sessions also are used as a natural, non-invasive way to combat fibromyalgia and various chronic pains and lower blood pressure and promote the body’s ability to heal. Discounted rates ($37 for an hour and $47 for 90 minutes) for those with physical or psychological ailments are available with a valid doctor’s prescription.

Brown said he first used the flotation experience five years ago to combat stress and anxiety.

“It helped me to the point where I knew it could help others,” he said. “I wanted to help others in a natural way.”

The flotation sessions also can be used to deepen meditation or to “just unplug from society for an hour.”

The business also offers medical and deep tissue massage, which some customers book together with a float to maximize the effects of both treatments, Brown said.

“Having the float beforehand with the mind completely relaxed … and the body completely at peace, the tension reduction is incredible,” he said.

An infrared sauna with touch-screen controls is used in sessions from 30 to 47 minutes to penetrate the skin to break down heavy metals and toxins. A variety of programs are available, including detox, pain relief and weight loss, which burns 400 to 600 calories in 30 minutes.

Future business plans include a second location in Cincinnati, one that would include everything at the West Chester location, plus yoga, physical therapy and a variety of holistic approaches.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week. For more information, visit www.taofloatloft.com or call 513-755-1236.
