Meijer recalls apple slices for fear of listeria

As a result of the Fresh-Pak Inc. recall, Meijer is announcing a voluntary recall of select Meijer-brand packaged products due to sliced apples within the products being potentially tainted with Listeria monocytogenes.

As of Dec. 20, there had been no known illnesses reported in connection with this recall, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Listeria monocytogenes is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems, including animals, the FDA said.

Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, a Listeria monocytogenes infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women, the FDA also said.

The following Meijer brand packaged products contain apple slices that were supplied by Detroit-based Fresh-Pak, Inc. Products include: Meijer Michigan Harvest Salad – 10 oz.; Meijer Sharable Waldorf Salad – 16 oz.; and Meijer Fresh Cranberry Apple Stuffing Starter – 18.9 oz, according to the FDA’s warning.

Customers should stop using the product and either dispose of it, or return it to the customer service desk at any Meijer store for a refund.
