Looking for a job? The things experts say you must do at job fairs

Job seekers presented with a job fair seemingly every week in the Butler County area or throughout the region know opportunity when they see it.

But how many of them take the time to not only present themselves in the best light, but also do what it takes afterward to followup and maximize the chances of positive results in the long run?

We spoke with Melissa O’Brien, business services manager at OhioMeansJobs-Butler County, 4631 Dixie Hwy. in Fairfield, and asked her five questions to help job seekers stand a better chance of not only being recognized and remembered following a job fair, but also increase the odds of snaring the actual job for which they are applying.

Q: What is it about job fairs that makes them an appealing route for those on a job-seeking journey?

A: “Job fairs appeal to job seekers because there are a wide variety of employers and positions available. There are many different skill levels from entry level to highly skilled. Employers will conduct on the spot interview and make job offers the same day. Job fairs can save job seekers time and money, since it’s all in one place. They are also fun and the event is usually very relaxed and casual, (but) remember to dress professionally. Job seekers get to meet the hiring managers, it puts you in front of the company (and) they’re free.”

Q: What general advice would you give someone attending a job fair?

A: “Come prepared with several copies of an updated resume, dress appropriately in business attire, prioritize the employers you want to meet with and be prepared to talk about yourself.”

Q: What’s the biggest mistake people make when attending a job fair?

A: “Not talking to all employers; you never know what positions they may have available. You won’t know unless you ask. Not being prepared; be prepared to answer questions about yourself.”

Q: What can someone do to make themselves stand out at a job fair?

A: “Smile, talk with the company’s representatives ask them their names. Research the companies that are going to be at the Job Fair and know something about each one, so when you speak to them they know you did your research. Make sure to thank them for their time; be courteous. Practice what you are going to say and practice again. Ask questions, but make sure they are relevant.”

Q: What’s the best way of following up with a company following a job fair?

A: “Ask for the representative’s business card as your conversation is coming to an end. Let them know you will follow up with them the following week and make sure you do it.”
