Conquer your chocolate cravings

Chocolate. Is there anything quite like it? And when we’re craving it, is there anything that can substitute for it?

An article written by a registered dietitian on SparkPeople.com, an online social community and resource website for those looking to lose weight, says you might be able to curb the urge for chocolate indulgence for under 160 calories.

The secret, as with all things, is moderation. Thanks to sugar and milkfat, chocolate is relatively calorie-dense, meaning a small portion (say, a square from a Hershey bar) provides a lot of calories.

But many (dare I say, most?) of us find it hard to stop at one square and end up over-indulging the craving, which can lead to guilt and frustration for those trying to slim down.

SparkPeople’s article suggests using sugar-free or fat-free treats that are chocolate-flavored.

Some of the suggestions? Chocolate soy milk, sugar-free Jello chocolate pudding, chewy chocolate-chip granola bars, and chocolate-coated raisins or pretzels.

(There are a ton more. Read the full article here.)

Of course, moderation is still key, especially when it comes to portion sizes. But when you’re going coo-coo for something cocoa, at least there are options to take the edge off.
