Spring fashion blooming with color

As spring returns the color to the flower beds, lawns and trees, bright colors are appearing on the clothes racks and in fashion catalogs.

Spring usually brings with it some signature pastels and various shades of the primary colors - red, blue and yellow. In recent years, the trends have been toward brighter shades of these colors, leaving pastels to Easter bonnets and Jordan almonds.

YELLOW This year, butter and gold seem to be the preferred shades of yellow. Yellow is being paired with black and gray for a striking contrast effect, often in bold geometric patterns. Want to work some yellow into your spring wardrobe? Try pairing a solid yellow top with a patterned skirt that has just a bit of yellow in it, or stash your stuff in a yellow handbag.

RED Cranberry paired with white is a popular combination for tops, often in a soft-lined watercolor print. Meanwhile, magenta is showing up on accessories like belts, clutches and flip-flops. In small doses, these shades can even work together in the same outfit, using a neutral white or black to tie them together.

BLUE Teal is showing up everywhere, offering a cool but bold compliment to the brighter reds and yellows. Teal works best with other cool colors like purple and gray, but it also plays nice with warm hues like coral. For inspiration, take a look at some Monet paintings to see blue-green shades at work.

How are you updating your spring wardrobe? Do you stick to the trends or buck them in favor of your own style?
