Are you cutting back on holidays?
This year I’ve decided to really minimize my Christmas shopping list. I’m purchasing for family and a few of my friends’ children.
I’ve asked my friends if we could skip Christmas and stick with getting birthday presents for each other. Frankly, they all were relieved, except for one who insisted we continue.
I think I’ve cut the amount of money I will spend in half.
I’ve also done things like this: Kohl’s gave me $20 in ‘Kohl’s cash’ after I spent $100 in (actual) cash. Usually, I would just use that on myself. Instead, I wait the few days I have until the Kohl’s cash is active and head back to that very store and buy something for someone else that I most likely picked out during the original trip. It’s work, but I saved $20, didn’t I?
Others are doing this as well. Did you know there is a ‘re-gifting’ movement across the country, trying to show people that it is not tacky to give someone else a gift someone purchased for you but that just doesn’t work?
What are you doing? Do you have some tips for others?

cut the christmas card lists and postage, cut the gifts, cut the food, cut going out to eat. I even cut the tree.

I cut back several years ago. Most everyone I know has too many things they do not need anyway. It takes a lot of work and time to get rid of “stuff” properly. That has been my focus and more charitable giving now that the children are grown (and no grandkids). The holiday season seems to be more commercial hype and obsession than religious based. Even though I do not shop for Christmas gifts except for charitable and some personal, I freak out over the stress I sense from everyone else - how they drive, etc. Very few seem to enjoy this frantic exercise in shopping binges - our year round consumerism runs amok.

I’m giving homemade gifts. My dog leaves a lot of presents in the backyard, and sometimes in the middle of the kitchen. I just regift them.
