Girlie pix do cause men to objectify women
Just in time for the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue comes word that pictures of scantily clad women do lead men to think of women as objects.
Before the word, “Duh!” escapes from your lips, read on. You’ll get a bit of a scientific explanation that at least explains things.
When men are shown images of women in bikinis, the part of the brain they use when thinking about things like power tools lights up, according to brain scans.
At the same time, the region they use to try to tune into another person’s thoughts and feelings tunes down, according to the results of studies released at the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Researcher Susan Fiske of Princeton University said: ‘The only other time we have seen this is when people look at pictures of the homeless or of drug addicts because they really don’t want to think about what is going on in their minds.’
Overall, the experiments showed that sexy images lead men to think of women as ‘less than human’
‘I am not saying there should be censorship but people need to know of the associations people have in their minds,’ Fiske said.
Before everybody gets all over men, remember it’s just what their brains are hardwired to do. But they do have a responsibility to think beyond that.
Women were not without distasteful or shallow traits in the study.
Asked if women were likely to view half-dressed men in the same way, Fiske said that women tended to rate age and bank balance over looks.
So are men out of control and women pragmatic? What do you think?
