What do ‘ex-pats’ miss most about Dayton?
When you (or your grown-up kids) return home for the holidays, where is the first place you want to go after catching up with the family? What’s the one restaurant or hangout or other destination you miss the most about living here? And what is it about that place that makes it so special? We’re planning a story about what Dayton-area natives miss most about living in the Miami Valley, and what they do about it when they come home for the holidays. Two memorials in the works for the late Paul Russell
Two memorials are being planned for Paul Russell, the local wine community member and jazz enthusiast who passed away Dec. 3 while en route to Jay’s Kitchen Door for its Saturday afternoon wine tasting.
The first will be held this Sunday, Dec. 18, at Jazz Central at 2931 E. Third St. in Dayton, which will dedicate the Sunday Jazz Jam to Paul’s memory. The music spot’s web site says the jazz jam will be held from 8 p.m. to midnight.
A second memorial gathering is scheduled for Jan. 21 at Jay’s. Final details are not yet complete, but will likely include a wine luncheon.

A few twists in this holiday wine-tastings list
On one hand, there are several special wine tastings between now and the end of the year, including some sparkling-wine tastings after Christmas. On the other hand, some shops are suspending their tastings until after the first of the year. Fortunately, the folks at the Dayton-based listserv are on top of it all, and deliver everything we want to know in this wine tastings and events list that the listserv compiles and shares with Uncorked. Ho ho ho!
