Kroger ups the ante again with new wine shop that opens today
Kroger — which will open its new Centerville Marketplace store at 7 a.m. today, Dec. 8 — has packed its wine department with more wines than previous new-store openings in Englewood, Kettering and Beavercreek.
The new store’s wine shop will have about 2,400 selections, according to Dean Breeding, the wine-department manager whom Kroger has called upon to open other Marketplace and Fresh Fare stores in the Dayton area.
Breeding said he has worked with the region’s wine distributors to fill the store with both wines that cost less than $25 — which account for about 70 percent of the selections — and with more expensive wines that will fill the “reserve area.” The store will host frequent special tastings and food-and-wine pairing events for customers, he said.
Those tastings start today and extend through Sunday on grand-opening weekend in which four samples will be offered for $5. From noon to 6 p.m. today, Dec. 8, the wines available for tasting will be La Crema Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, and Simi Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon. On Friday, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., Hawkstone Chardonnay and Merlot and Rodney Strong Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon will be on the tasting bar.
From 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, customers can sample Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir and Kendall-Jackson Grand Reserve Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon, and on Sunday from 2 to 6, sparkling wines Korbel Sweet Rose and Brut, and Mumm Napa Valley Cuvee M and Prestige Brut, will be poured.
