Of course these wines are world-class, but sometimes simplicity works best
The wines contained in the following wine-tastings-and-events list (compiled by a Dayton-based wine listserv) are astounding and wonderful. But sometimes, it doesn’t take astounding and wonderful to make one happy.
I returned last weekend from a week at the beach on Jekyll Island, GA., where I stayed in a big ol’ beach house with my family and my wife’s extended family — 15 in all, and all adults. Most nights, I cooked for the clan — think seafood, in large quantities. We quickly soaked up the wines I brought down in the trusty mini-van, but on a resupply mission to nearby Brunswick, I stumbled across a quaint little wine shop called True Vine that had a fresh and lovely 2010 Provence Rose for a scant $11.99 (I’ll remember the producer’s name, maybe someday) and a hearty 2007 Cotes-du-Rhone from Vidal-Fleury for a few bucks more. Both wines hit all the right notes — ALL the right notes.
Sometimes, simple is best.
Then again, if you’re fortunate enough to live anywhere near Dayton, Ohio, you can partake in simple, complex, and everything in between, as you can see from this truly astonishing list of wines being offered up at local wine shops, grocers, restaurants and other fine establishments:
