Bidding war erupts at Jay’s charity event
Some members of the Dayton-area wine community were in a generous mood last weekend at the “For the Love of Wine” charity fundraiser held May 1 at Jay’s Restaurant for Camp Emanuel, a camp for hearing-impaired and developmentally disabled children.
How generous? A four-bottle sampler of fine Brunello di Montalcinos from four different producers sold for $550, $200 over its estimated value, while a single bottle of 1985 Graham’s Vintage Port sold for $250, more than twice its estimated value of $110. And a multi-course wine dinner for eight people at Jay’s restaurant prepared by executive chef Chris Cavender sold for $2,000, twice the amount of the opening bid. A French dinner for six served in the winning bidder’s home and prepared by Jon Warner and the event co-chair Doug Lehrer also fetched $2,000, and an Italian dinner for eight served in the winning bidder’s home prepared by Mike Tenore, Brent Bamberger and Carla Robinson was won with an $1,800 bid.
Suffice to say that the bidding was spirited — and the spirits were high.
