Dueling wine dinners & more on this amazing tastings list
L’Auberge and Carvers Steaks & Chops are both hosting very tantalizing wine dinners next Wednesday, Nov. 17, while Hawthorn Grill is hosting its very first wine dinner two days before, on Monday, Nov. 15.
Those are highlights of yet another stunning week of wine events in the Miami Valley, which are laid out in further detail here courtesy of a Dayton-based wine listserv.
But first, the dinners, starting with the Monday event at Hawthorn Grill on Stroop Road near Marshall Road in Kettering: I hope I’m not too late in letting you know about this one. The restaurant’s email says it wanted reservations by yesterday (Thursday Nov. 11), but perhaps it’s not too late, and if it is, ask to be put on their email list so you can be first to learn about the next wine dinner. The menu for the Monday event (seating at 6:30 p.m., first course served at 7 p.m.) includes Diver Caught Scallops with Spinach & Arugula Salad, Roasted Acorn Squash, Apple, Pomegranate and Portobello Mushrooms, served with 2007 Schloss Vollrad Riesling Kabinett; Pan Roasted Quail with Butternut Squash and Wild Mushroom Risotto, served with 2008 Wente Morning Fog Chardonnay; Sausage Stuffed Pork Loin with Mashed Parsnips, Haricots Verts and Maple Glazed Carrots, served with 2006 Cambria Julia’s Vineyard Pinot Noir; and Sweet Potato Tart with Maple Cream, Molten Chocolate Cake and Cinnamon Ice Cream served with Taylor Fladgate 10 Year Tawny Port. Then on Wednesday, Nov. 17, L’Auberge, 4120 Far Hills Ave., will host a wine dinner featuring the restaurant’s former general manager, Brian DeMarke, and the Washington State wines of Long Shadows Vintners, at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 17. DeMarke left l’Auberge in May to take a job with the Mason-based wine importer and distributor Vintner Select, the distributor of Long Shadows wines. The wine-dinner menu will include Terrine of Hudson Valley Foie Gras; Bison Oxtail with Saffron Risotto and Truffle Sauce; Fricassee of Wild Pheasant with Red Caper Gnocchi and Oregon Chanterelle Mushrooms; Medallion of Canadian Venison with Red Cabbage and Sauce Grand Veneur; and Crepe Souffle. Each course will be served with one of the impressive wines of Long Shadows. The cost is $150, and reservations are required. For more information or to make reservations, call (937) 299-5536.
And on that same night, Carvers Steaks & Chops, 1535 Miamisburg-Centerville Road, will host a wine dinner featuring the wines of Chateau St. Jean at at 6:30 p.m. Wednesdsay, Nov. 17. The menu will include Alaskan Halibut Crusted with Almonds; Roasted Chicken Breast Glazed with Bourbon; Hand-Carved Filet Mignon with Garlic Parsley New Potatoes; and Mixed Berry Crostata With Grand Marnier Sabayon. Each course will be served with a wine from the Sonoma County winery. The cost is $60, plus tax and tip. Reservations are required.
