Are children harmed by observing wine tastings?
Legislators in Maine have voted to ban children from observing wine tastings, according to the Kennebec Journal. The new law will take effect Sept. 12.
Presumably, lawmakers felt children would be harmed by viewing such behavior.
Take a look at what my fellow wine blogger Tom Wark thinks of the legislation. I’ll give you a hint: The entry’s headline is “Attack of the Stupid Wine Legislation.”
Would a law like this pass in Ohio?

Because, God forbid, children see examples of drinking in moderation and the appreciation the wine - instead of drinking it to get drunk. This is an example of silly legislation about something that parents (and those giving the tasting in question) should have a right to have the final say in.

Ultimately most people in this country get the government they deserve. You can try to pass a law banning stupdiity, but what would be the point? Who would have the brains to read it?

Maybe the retailers in Maine are really behind this legislation. I know in Columbus, this guy use to show up to wine tastings with his child, all of the time. The child was a true menace. While his father was busy tasting, he would proceed to wreak havoc – tearing down shelf talkers, chewing up cheese and spitting it back on the tray and breaking bottles. Maybe the guys up in Maine are experiencing the same thing.

As a winery owner, our daughter is a part of most of our wine tastings. She is the heir to what her father and I have built for her. Knowing that Nolita is an exception and this law could find its way into Ohio law books as well, people need to wake up and realize that the US has a problem with alcoholism mostly due to the prohibition of the children being taught early on the drinking should be done responsibly and that drunken behaviour should be intolerable by society as it is in Europe. Until that happens, this sort of stupidity is going to continue… unfortunately.

They let children drink wine & other spirits from birth (“day one”) in Europe. I suppose that’s why Europeans started two world wars. Gosh darn, I ‘m glad the euroweenie Maine politicians saw this dhichotomy…and prevented it from happening here!!!!! MY GOD!!!! WHAT DRIVES THESE PEOPLE…WHERE ARE THEY FROM? Read the post from STACY LAW and everyone above that post. Jesus Christ on a crutch!!!!!! What in the hell is wrong with you people!!!! JESUS SUPPOSEDLY DRANK WINE!!!! HE WAS THE SON OF GOD!!!!! I grew up in CA and went to wine tastings with my Mom once every year or so. Back then, kids were allowed to taste with their parent’s permission. I think I turned out ok (but you’ll have to take my word for it, I guess).

If a parent ACTS like a parent then no they aren’t harmed. I see this as a way for the govt to step in to say what is “right” for kids. This should be a parental decision. Now the parents will have to fork out for babysitters because the govt is afraid the parents won’t teach their children not to get drunk and wait until it’s legal to drink.

As Michael Savage says: “Red diaper doper babies”. Liberalism is truly a mental disorder.

Where do these questions come from. What is wrong with people? Do the people who ask these kinds of questions think that humanity is a recent arrival on the planet?

Should we ban pregnant women from being near a wine tasting because she might inhale a few molecules of wine aroma that could adversly impact the baby?

It depends on how much wine is being tasted. Also no tasting going on at home. We wouldn’t want to harm “the little darlings”

Oh my gosh, lets all live in plastic bubbles, and keep our children blindfolded and ear plugged until they are 18.

Before a law like this passes in Ohio, legislation should ban children from the Golden Corrals. It is immoral for children to watch old cows graze.
