Donated 3-liter will benefit Carina Nikolai education fund
Local husband-and-wife wine enthusiasts Jim Cretcher and Judy Robinson and the folks at Dorothy Lane Markets have come up with a creative way to help the family of Todd Nikolai.
Todd, who ran the wine shop at Dorothy Lane Market’s Oakwood store for several years and worked most recently for Mason-based wine distributor Vintner Select, was only 40 when he passed away last June, leaving behind a wife and 3-year-old daughter.
Cretcher and Robinson have donated a three-liter bottle of 1983 Inglenook Charbono that will be available for sampling during the regular Saturday aftenoon tasting on April 18 at DLM’s Washington Square store in Washington Twp., Cretcher said. All proceeds from the Charbono samples will be donated to the education fund set up for Todd’s daughter, Carina.
Cretcher said he and Judy were looking for an opportunity to help, and they hope the donation will inspire others to look for ways to help, too.
The 26-year-old Charbono should be fun to try, given the grape’s aging potential and relative scarcity.
Cretcher said he bought the bottle of wine — which holds the equivalent of four standard-sized bottles — from a Toledo-area retailer about 10 years ago.
I’d say he’s popping the cork at the right time and for a good cause, wouldn’t you agree?

What a wonderful idea, and a generous way to allow others to taste this rare wine while helping the Nikolai family!! I’ll be there! P.S. to jon: This particular varietal of Inglenook is not cheap! A simple search shows that a 1991 Inglenook Charbono is being sold for $99, for the 750-ml bottle. Recall that this 3-liter bottle holds 4 standard bottles. Also, it has been aged for 26 years. It will be fun to try.

Isn’t Inglenook that cheap $5.99/mag wine you find on the bottom self?

What an excellent cause. I agree, if there were ever an excuse to open up one of your favorite bottles, this event is it.

Small world moment: From 1984-1986 I had to travel to Travis AFB every other month or so and made a drive up to Napa before heading home a few of those times. I distinctly remember visiting Inglenook on one of those trips and having my first taste of Charbono and liking it. Every time I see Charbono, I remember that visit to Inglenook, maybe because it’s not a grape I encounter very often. That first taste could well have been this very vintage. We’ll be there!
