Which local wine tastings best suit wine novice ‘s palate?

I received an email from a reader who wants a bit of guidance concerning Dayton-area wine tastings, and I thought I’d solicit the help of Uncorked readers in answering his question. What would you tell him?

My wife and I are not very familiar with wine, but would like to go to some tastings. We are beginners, but would like to know if you could advise some of the better wine tasting events in the area for someone new in this interest. I work part-time at (a local food-and-kitchen-themed store) as a second job, and get asked questions all the time about wines, but I am not much help and need to get more familiar with various wines. Any help would be appreciated.

A Super Saturday, indeed

Wine? You betcha! Among the highlights: “Super Saturday” at Arrow Wine & Spirits’ Far Hills store. including representatives of San Marino pouring some wines from that region of Italy. The tastings and events list comes to Uncorked courtesy of a Dayton-based wine listserv that compiles and shares the list with its members. And that’s a good thing.

New wine-glass design guarantees I’ll wear my wine on my shirt

Got a pitch this week for a newly designed wine glass called the Silhouette, which is brought to you by a web site with the humble name of GreatestWineGlass.com.

Take a look at this, and tell me if you’ve ever seen anything like it before — I mean, not counting the time you tried to hand-dry your Riedel:

wineglass.jpg

Here’s what the marketing folks have to say about the glasses, which, by the way, cost $54 each:

Inspired by people who enjoy wine, Tomzi International, Ltd. has created Silhouette stemware - a one-of-a-kind wine glass that enhances the drinking experience through the sense of smell. The unique design of the Silhouette features a notched rim that allows a generous flow of air into the glass, prompting the wine to release its distinct aromas. The ample, graceful notch on the Silhouette also helps direct the bouquet to the nose, turning every sip - from the first to the last - into a multi-sensory event. With this distinctive design, the taster is ready to capture a wine’s true essence while sipping, since up to 90-percent of taste comes through smell. The design also allows for a clean pour.
Undoubtedly functional, the Silhouette also is a beautiful piece of stemware - with its tall stem and generous 20-oz bowl - suitable for enjoying any variety, any vintage. Standing at 9+ inches tall, each wineglass is 24-percent lead crystal and hand-crafted in the Bohemia region of The Czech Republic, an area recognized around the world for its exceptional glassmaking skills. Though created to maximize the flavor and experience of wine, Silhouette stemware is also sure to bring a new level of conversation and experience to the table. Silhouette makes a great gift for the wine lover, foodie or trendsetter.

I don’t know about you, but THIS habitual wine-swirler would be wearing the red wine from my glass to my shirt within a matter of moments. Still, I could see some advantages to this glass design, if I were ever able to break the unconscious swirling habit.

Would you add this glass to your Christmas wish-list?

A power surge, and Ernest & Julio’s … tequila?!?

The Fisher household, I’m relieved to say, is back up and running semi-normally after power was restored late Sunday night (9-21-08), seven days and six hours after the remnants of Hurricane Ike blew through Ohio and chewed up its trees and power lines. Who’d ‘a thunk a hurricane could do this much damage to Ohio?

On the other hand, who’d ‘a thunk E&J Gallo would enter the tequila market? That’s the news Sunday from The Modesto Bee, which wrote a fine profile of the company and its current chief, Joseph Gallo — Ernest’s son.

Gallo lays out the company’s future, which involves “plans to expand into hard liquor like tequila, push wine sales into China and Russia, reintroduce an old favorite (sangria) and prepare for the next hot-selling varietal (perhaps malbec),” the Bee said.

Gallo is in the process of planting the agave needed to produce its 100 percent agave tequila, Joseph Gallo told the Bee.

What with all of the attention showered on other wine-and-spirits mega-corporations these days, it’s easy for Gallo to slip under the radar, but lest we forget, this is a company that sells more than 70 million cases a year, and Gallo said his family’s company is “growing at a pretty healthy rate.”

Besides, who among us who remember the ’80s could ever forget the Bartles & James commercials — “Thank you for your support.”

Hey, maybe they’ll bring back that tag line for the tequila marketing campaign. If it worked once …

Didier Dagueneau killed in plane crash

Wine Spectator is reporting this morning that Didier Dagueneau was killed yesterday (9-17-08) when the ultralight plane he was piloting crashed after takeoff in France.

Dagueneau was an iconoclastic winemaker in the Pouilly-Fume region of France, where he produced some of the most intense and distinctive sauvignon blancs on the planet. I’ve had the chance to taste only a couple of his wines, but they stood out, much as he did.

Have you encountered any of Dagueneau’s wines?

Here’s another tribute to Dagueneau from Louis Dressner Selections.

Russia tries to elbow its way onto the world’s fine-winemaking stage

This struck me as the most interesting story in the wine world today, so I thought I’d share: It’s headlined “Russian renaissance: Free from Soviet restraints, winemakers seek a return to quality and craft”, and it’s from the Chicago Tribune.

Fine Russian wine. What’s next?

And yes, my house is still without power, thanks for asking.

The things I learn while sitting in the dark

For those of you outside of the Dayton area, we had the remnants of Hurricane Ike blow through Ohio on Sunday afternoon, and while it certainly didn’t pack the same kind of punch that it did when it first came ashore in the Houston-Galveston area, the ol’ bitch still had quite a bit of kick left to ‘er. Gusts of 60-70 miles per hour toppled trees and branches throughout the region (not to mention my back yard), and as of this writing, my house (and tens of thousands of others) is still without power, as is the printing plant that prints the Dayton Daily News.

But more importantly, this I learned: A bottle of white wine (Oregon pinot gris, I believe) kept in a refrigerator that loses its power on a Sunday afternoon has reached its absolute optimum serving temperature by Monday evening. Perfect right out of the fridge, into my glass, and into my mouth.

Not that I would recommend any of you trying this at home …

Any storm-related wine experiences out there you’d like to share?

READER POLL: Do wine and cigars mix?

There is a quote in this week’s Wine Spectator magazine from a sommelier in Havana, Cuba, who described a cigar — a prized Cohiba 5 Maduro, to be precise — as “fresh and clean on your palate.”

Somehow, I think that freshness and cleanliness would be lost on my palate, thankyouverymuch.

As longtime readers may recall from previous posts along the lines of Wine + Cigars = Blech and A cigar that ‘complements’ wine? Yeah, and monkeys fly out of my … (my oh my, that must have been my provocative phase) that I’ve never developed a taste for tobacco in any of its forms.

My experience with cigars is mostly limited to the four-packs of Swisher Sweets my high school buddies and I bought at Johnny’s Carryout in Beavercreek (which is still there) to smoke on Saturday night at the Belmont Auto Drive-In movie theater (which isn’t). I’ve puffed on a handful of luxury, premium cigars in recent years, but didn’t find the experience at all pleasing, and it certainly didn’t enhance my subsequent appreciation of wine. In fact, quite the opposite.

Do I miss the days of trying to taste wines amidst the fragrant blue haze of the Arrow Wine & Spirits Far Hills tasting bar (it was right next to Arrow’s smoke shop) before the smoking ban was implemented? I do not.

But I must be in the distinct minority, based on what I’ve read and heard out of our local wine and spirits purveyors. Organizers of the Jungle Jim’s International Wine Festival proudly proclaim the fact they’ll have “an outdoor area for premium cigar smoking” at their event, and Eric Jerardi and the other folks behind Sidebar, the new wine bar and cocktail lounge in downtown Dayton, will sell cigars from an in-house humidor, for smoking on the bar’s spacious patio.

Oh joy.

So is it just me? Tell me your opinion: do wine and cigars mix?

If it’s rainin,’ we may as well taste wine

This weekend’s forecast calls for dreary and wet weather outside, but it’s always warm and cheerful inside at the at the wine tastings at Dayton-area wine shops and grocery stores and restaurants. Those tastings are presented here in all of their glorious splendor courtesy of a Dayton-based wine listserv that compiles the information. (For wine-related events in the Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky area, go to Michelle’s My Wine Education blog.) Can you imagine a French jury judging Robert Parker?

Interesting news on the trusty ol’ Associated Press wire this morning entitled “Wine critic Parker facing defamation charges” … sounds like a lot of hullaballoo about nothin,’ and it probably would be in the U.S., which I suspect has more forgiving freedom-of-speech rights than France does.

But contemplate for a moment: If this case went to a jury — I’m not familiar enough with the French judicial system (thank heavens) to know whether it would, but if it did — can you imagine the French vignerons who would just LOVE to somehow get themselves into that jurors’ pool? They’ll flock to Paris to pay Parisians to stand in for them at the courthouse … “This will be the last time you give MY Chassagne-Montrachet an 82, you American you …”

Sinclair, Jungle Jim’s to host wine events

What better way to blend my old beat at the Dayton Daily News — covering higher education — with the current wine-and-food-and-dining beat than to let you know of a wine-tasting event at Sinclair Community College? It’s this Friday, Sept. 12, and it’s called the Sinclair Alumni Association Second Annual “A Vintage Affair”. It will be held in the plaza outside the Sinclair Conference Center on Friday, September 12, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. Click on the link above more more details and ticket info. (You should know that the “wine expert” referenced in the news release is none other than Dennis Hall, of Fairfield Wine fame and of course, frequent Uncorked commenter/contributor…)

In addition, Jungle Jim’s International Market at 5440 Dixie Highway (Ohio 4) in Fairfield is putting together its very first International Wine Festival, and offering a choice of attending on either a Friday night or Saturday night, Oct. 3 or Oct. 4, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Click on the links above for details. Sounds like quite an ambitious bash.

Now, here’s one thing I like about BOTH of these wine events: the organizers are offering reduced-price admission tickets for those who will not drink. There’s no better way to ensure that a designated driver will be available to get attendees home safely than to offer non-drinkers the chance to attend and to enjoy the food selections with water or non-alcoholic drinks. I recognize this may not be possible at all wine events because of limited space, but I wish organizers of some of the Miami Valley’s largest wine-and-food events would consider such a two-tiered admission system, perhaps on a trial basis.

Ste. Michelle wines gain a few more strange corporate bedfellows — for now

A couple of weeks ago I posted an entry entitled Lest we forget that wine is a business — a very BIG business.

Well, take that sentiment, multiply it by a power of 10, and read the Monday, Sept. 8 update from Wine & Spirits Daily, which details the $11.7 billion (yes, billion) acquisition of UST by the The Altria Group. More details can be found at this Altria press release.

I, for one, am SO glad that these two mega-corporations are getting together to create “the premier tobacco company in the United States with leading brands in cigarettes, smokeless tobacco and machine-made large cigars,” to quote Altria chairman Michael E. Szymanczyk in his own press release.

I’ve always felt that UST’s dominance in the “moist smokeless tobacco” category, with its Copenhagen and Skoal brands, would make a simply perfect fit with Altria’s strength in the cigarette category, don’t you agree?

Marlboro, Skoal and Ste. Michelle wines all under the same big corporate tent — now that’s synergy, baby.

Or, maybe not. At lease one analyst predicts to Reuters that Altria will likely sell Ste. Michelle.

We live in a strange world.

Food & Wine magazine names the top wines, winemakers of 2008

Food & Wine magazine has named the winners of its American Wine Awards 2008.

These are the magazine’s 11th annual awards.

Here’s a copy of a news release Food & Wine released, and a list of the winners. Has anyone tried any of these wines? There are several names here I’ve never heard of — but then again, they probably haven’t yet discovered Dayton, Ohio, either.

New York, NY — Celia Masyczek of Napa Valley was named Winemaker of the Year in Food & Wine magazine’s 11th annual American Wine Awards, announced today by Editor in Chief Dana Cowin. Food & Wine also selected the top American wines above and below $20, from Chardonnay to Zinfandel; honored Neal Rosenthal of Rosenthal Wine Merchant as Importer of the Year; and singled out Breggo Cellars as Best New Winery. Winners are profiled in the October wine issue, on newsstands September 15th.
“We added a new sparkling wine category this year because there are so many well-made domestic sparkling wines, not just from California but from Oregon and Washington State. Schramsberg’s much-beloved founder, Jamie Davies, passed away this year, so the award is a nice homage to him.” Cowin says.
Cowin adds, “Celia Masyczek is the talent behind a number of cult California Cabernets, including the new Scarecrow, one of the most sought-after wines in Napa Valley. She’s a winemaker’s winemaker. Her wines are famous, but she’s not. We aim to change that with this award.”

And here are the award winners:

WINEMAKER OF THE YEAR Celia Masyczek, Napa Valley, CA

BEST NEW WINERY Breggo Cellars, Anderson Valley, CA

BEST IMPORTER Neal Rosenthal of Rosenthal Wine Merchant, New York

BEST WINES UNDER $20

CHARDONNAY 2007 FoxGlove ($15)

SAUVIGNON BLANC 2007 Brander Santa Ynez Valley ($15)

PINOT NOIR 2006 A To Z Wineworks Oregon ($18)

MERLOT 2005 Raymond R Collection ($15)

CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2005 Columbia Crest H3 ($15)

ZINFANDEL 2006 Edmeades Mendocino County ($18)

SYRAH 2006 Qupe Central Coast ($16)

BEST WINES OVER $20

CHARDONNAY 2005 Ramey Ritchie Vineyard ($65)

SAUVIGNON BLANC 2007 Cliff Lede Napa Valley ($22)

PINOT NOIR 2005 Talley Vineyards Rosemary’s Vineyard ($38)

MERLOT 2005 Shafer Napa Valley ($45)

SYRAH 2006 Tensley Colson Canyon Vineyard ($38)

ZINFANDEL 2005 Bella Lily Hill Estate ($36)

CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2004 Harlan Estate ($600)

BORDEAUX BLEND 2005 Dominus ($129)

OUTSTANDING SPARKLING WINE 2004 Schramsberg Blanc De Blancs ($35)

In the under-$20 category: I’ve had Brander’s wines in the past and they’ve been excellent, and I’ve always felt Qupe’s syrahs show remarkable consistency and great value. A to Z has impressed me with their whites, but I’m not sure I’ve tried their pinot. You?

In the $20-and-up, I can’t say I’ve tried many of these wines, although I have been blessed to taste earlier vintages of Harlan Estate and found it to be among the few California cult cabernets to be worth the hype (although perhaps not worth the current retail!).

What do you think of Food & Wine’s list?

Make it a September to remember

The wine tastings and events list you’re about to read is a minor miracle. No, make that a major miracle. First, that the region’s wine shops and restaurants lay out such a lavish spread week after week, all just for l’il ol’ us, and second, that a Dayton-based wine listserv painstakingly (and sometimes, painfully) compiles all of this information into a single email for its members. Go ahead, click on “continue reading.” You’ll be as awed as I am

And for wine-related events in the Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky area — including information about a wine dinner at a new seafood restaurant that opened in downtown Cincinnati just a couple of months ago — go to Michelle’s My Wine Education blog. We’ll call her list a mini-miracle.

Dayton rules. Enjoy the wine events!

‘Wine-at-home’ company sues Ohio, succeeds in blocking law that would have stopped sales parties

Back in June, when I wrote an entry entitled “Governor vetoes ‘wine-at-home’ legislation”, suffice to say I did not anticipate the storm that followed.

Well, that storm has shifted venues — it’s now playing out in a federal courtroom. Here’s a story I’m writing for tomorrow’s editions of the Dayton Daily News:

COLUMBUS — A California company that arranges “wine-at-home” promotional parties in Ohio and several other states has filed a lawsuit against the Ohio Division of Liquor Control in federal court and has succeeded in blocking, at least temporarily, a law that would have banned the parties.

The company, Napa-based 1-800-WineShop.com, claims the law violates the company’s First Amendment rights of free speech and assembly and is therefore unconstitutional. U.S. District Judge Michael Watson agreed with the company’s argument in granting its request for a temporary restraining order prohibiting the state from enforcing the law that would have greatly restricted the wine-at-home parties as of Sept. 1.

The law, Watson wrote, is “so sweeping that it violates at least the First Amendment.”

The lawsuit was filed in U.S. District Court in Columbus on Aug. 26. The restraining order was granted Aug. 29. It is scheduled to expire after 10 days, but can be extended while the case moves forward.

In 1-800-WineShop.com wine parties, a “wine consultant” comes to another person’s home and introduces invited guests to samples of five or six of the company’s wines, then gathers and forwards wine orders to the company in exchange for a sales commission. Gov. Ted Strickland used a line-item veto in late June to ensure that language restricting wine-at-home parties remained part of a large state budget bill. Strickland’s office issued a press release saying his action “is in the public interest” because the wine-at-home parties escape regulation and oversight by the state’s liquor-control department, taxation department and local law enforcement. He signaled a “willingness to work with affected companies” to make the changes in state law that would allow them to continue to operate.

But in its lawsuit, 1-800-WineShop.com noted that the law would essentially block its 250 “Independent Wine Consultants” in Ohio who earn commissions for promoting WineShop wines from doing business.

In his Aug. 29 order, Judge Watson agreed with the assertion by 1-800-WineShop.com that the new law is “far more extensive than necessary” and said that the state’s interests in regulating alcohol “either already are or could be protected by less drastic means.”

The judge also appeared to dismiss the state’s objections that the wine-at-home parties could lead to wine being shipped to underage drinkers, noting that WineShop’s existing state permit requires it to use shipping companies that verify the age of the recipient of the wine.

Here’s perhaps the key paragraph of the judge’s decision:

“The public interest generally is served by regulation of the sale of alcoholic beverages by the states. Nonetheless, in this instance, the State of Ohio has, at the urging of the regulated community, according to defendants’ counsel, enacted a statute so sweeping that it violates at least the First Amendment. The Court does not mean to suggest the State cannot regulate plaintiffs’ in-home wine-tasting events. Indeed, counsel for the defendants has alluded to the State’s ability to fashion a permit for such activities. But a complete ban on such events does not pass constitutional muster. In this case, the public interest is best served by upholding the requirements of the U.S. Constitution.”

Ohio Division of Liquor Control spokesman Matt Mullins referred questions to the Ohio Attorney General’s office, which represents the division in legal disputes. A spokeswoman for attorney general’s office said the state’s attorneys are “reviewing the decision and considering all of their options.”

New study shows red wine works magic with steak — in the mouth AND the stomach

Well well WELL, check out this Wine Spectator online piece entitled “Red Wine Aids Meat Digestion”.

Turns out a team of Israeli medical researchers have concluded through a study that “red wine helps the stomach remove potentially harmful substances found in red meats, which are released during digestion, before the chemicals can do the body harm.”

Yeah, but didn’t we carnivorous wine enthusiasts already sort of suspect that — you know, instinctively?

Pass the tempranillo. And I like mine medium rare.

Marketers run amok, chapter 573: the making of ‘legal weed’

We do so like to poke fun on occasion at those who market wine, because …. because … well, just because.

But I can’t find anything to compete this morning with my colleague Alexis Larsen’s Lounge Lizards piece entitled Beer maker to market ‘Legal Weed’”. It’s based on this LA Times story that is, shall we say, sure to entertain.

Only in America.
