The $16,500 Wine Tasting
Hey, and you thought the Eclipse dinner was expensive!
Check out Decanter Magazine’s story about the wine tasting to end all wine tastings and get a little taste — or “a splash,” as the story says — of how the other half lives.
Let me see if I’ve got this straight: even at $16,500 a pop, this tasting was …
… sold out. Some of the wines were way over the hill and shot — probably punishing to even swallow. And organizers are already busily planning next year’s event!
Only in America.
Wait — let me be more specific: only in Manhattan.
Think something like this would fly in Dayton, Ohio?
Cheers!

As the old saying goes, if you have to ask the price, you probably can’t afford it. As Larry said, this is probably pocket change for those who attended. And honestly, if I could afford it, I would be at the front of the ticket line. Besides, is this tasting really any more decadent than, for example, drinking $1,000+ worth of wine while watching a Browns game?

40 wine lovers in NYC with the requisite $10-20K to blow on a wine weekend? Pocket change for most of them. Just the dinners had to be at least $1,5oo- and though I didn’t calculate it out, I’d hazard a guess that the average price per bottle was over $1,000 NY retail. (The ‘45 Petrus is $10,000)

A $16,500 wine tasting sounded disgustingly pretentious and like a self-centered (dare I say irresponsible) waste of money. I did a little more digging and, while it still sounds pompous, it’s perhaps not as bad as I originally thought. The $16,500 tab was a total 3-day package deal, with special meals served at 3 separate world-renowned restaurants and wines paired with each.
