Coyotes discussion to continue…

Last week, an information session hosted by West Chester and representatives from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources drew dozens of residents concerned about the local coyote population.

The session came after the first story we did about the Dorns, whose dog, Champ, is believed to have been mauled by a coyote.

According to those who attended the Nov. 4 info session (including residents and township officials), the mood was not too pleasant.

It’s no stretch, then, to say there will likely be plenty of folks showing up for the trustees’ next meeting Nov. 17.

But trustees aren’t leaning toward taking action against coyotes, especially if it means taking action on private property, despite residents’ pleas.

I have coyotes go through my yard early in the morning at noon, 3 and 4 in the afternoon and sometimes in the late evening. One of the original 3 that I saw gave birth to 9 puppies. Yes, NINE. My neighbor saw her male German Shepherd scrapping with one of the original 3 and we believe that these puppies are fathered by her shepherd. They grew up to be as big as her shepherd and one even circled my large golden retreiver as if it was deciding whether to attack her. She’s an older dog. I ran out screaming at the top of my lungs and went to grab her and it didn’t even phase the coyote. It so wasn’t afraid of me. That’s what frightens me. Not to mention the size of these new coyotes. They are about a year and a half old now. Twice one came out and went to the middle of the street and laid down in the street in the earlier part of the day. They are getting more use to humans and aren’t really too phased by our presence. I carry a gun out most of the time when my dog goes out. And yes I’ve shot it but these coyotes are lightening fast, not your typical dog speed.

What are the laws about killing/hunting coyotes? I looked briefly at the ODNR website, and it looks like coyotes are fair game during deer season. But I have never hunted, so I don’t know the details. Who knows these things?
