Strickland touts education reform plan

In case you missed it, Gov. Ted Strickland paid a visit to Humana’s RightSourceRx pharmaceutical distribution plant in West Chester Twp. this week to stump for his education reform bill approved this summer.

Here’s the story as it appeared in print, but I wanted to add a few things that were cut as a result of space constraints.

First, as mentioned in the article, local school treasurers are none too happy about Strickland’s plan, saying districts like Fairfield and Lakota are being punished despite excellent ratings on the state’s report card.

Sen. Gary Cates (R-West Chester Twp.), who was also in attendance during the tour of the facility and the resulting media Q&A of Strickland, agrees with the treasurers’ sentiment.

“All they got from the government is a pat on the back,” Cates said of local districts like Lakota, Fairfield and Ross.

As the previous story mentions, while most the state’s 613 public school districts are seeing an average increase in their funding (for the proposed programs) of 5.5 percent, districts like Lakota and Fairfield are seeing just 2.3 percent, treasurers have said.

“He’s done nothing to allow the money to follow the students,” Cates said. “Even as we grow in the number of students the state is not recognizing that they’re there.”

The program’s reforms (such as all-day kindergarten and school year extensions) will be implemented over the next decade, Strickland said.

“It’s sad that he has to come to a business to sell his education plan because school districts don’t like it,” Cates said. “It’s sad that he’s trying to sell a program that doesn’t exist.”
