Former trustee tosses hat in commission race
Former West Chester Twp. Trustee Jose Alvarez has taken out a petition to run for a seat on the Butler County Commission.
Alvarez joined a growing group of local folks vying to unseat longtime commissioner Gregory Jolivette.
An excerpt from county reporter Josh Sweigart’s blog:
Jolivette faces some big guns in the local party including county Clerk of Courts Cindy Carpenter and Treasurer Nancy Nix, which could split the vote.
A second slew of Republican challengers is arguing that new faces are needed in county government. This includes former West Chester Twp. Trustee Jose Alvarez and, most recently, Hamilton resident and active party member Richard Retherford.
“I want to see new blood, and people in this county I’ve talked to so far, they want to see new blood. They want to see new leadership,” Retherford said.
This comes as Jolivette faces an Ohio Ethics Commission investigation into the hiring of his son and daughter as county employees, and after a tumultuous year of budget cuts. Jolivette, a long-time popular politician, said he plans to face the mounting challenge head-on and seek the party endorsement.
