Veteran employees call it a day
Two longtime West Chester Twp. employees — each with nearly 30 years in their departments — will have a lot to do over the next few weeks. But none of it involves going into work.
For the first time in decades, as winter weather works its way into the lives of local residents, Norris Everspaugh, 58, will be more likely to grab a sled than the wheel of big rig situated behind a snow plow.
And at least for the time being, the only orders Lt. Col. Gil Flick will be taking or giving will be from his wife or the planner of his daughter’s wedding, respectively.
Friday, Dec. 19 is Everspaugh’s final day with the township’s maintenance department, where he’s toiled for the past 30 years and eight months in every job from driving a truck to driving a jackhammer into the ground.
“I think my daughter put it up on the calendar about six months ago,” Everspaugh said of his last day of work. “I didn’t do it. I knew when my last day was.”
Polly, Everspaugh’s wife of 36 years, said she’s been thankful of her husband’s attention during the past six months she’s been recovering from an injury.
But after Friday, “I’m going back to work,” she offered laughing.
Flick’s final day as West Chester’ assistant chief of police is Dec. 31. He joined the local department in 1976, working his way up to second in command by 2001.
Flick said he’ll miss the men and women with whom he’s worked over the past three decades, as evidenced by his quiet tearful response to comments (quips and compliments) during a ceremony that honored both men Tuesday, Dec. 16.
“I think they’re some of the best people in law enforcement today,” Flick said, flanked by his wife and daughter and son, Jason, who’s a member of the local department.
“Not only are they good police officers, but they’re good people.”
Flick, 54, said he isn’t totally ruling out returning to law enforcement in some capacity, but the next few months will be spent planning a June wedding.
“You just get used to the community service,” Flick said of police work. “You’re used to the demands and your family’s used to the demands.
