Citizen action on the road
As I write this, I’m listening to a police dispatcher’s conversation with a West Chester Police officer. A caller to the dispatch center is following a vehicle as it pulls in to successive driveways, suspicious behavior that motivated the caller to pick up his or her cell phone and alert the police.
I heard a similar call yesterday, in which a caller followed a suspected drunk driver who was weaving at high speed through traffic.
First off, if you place a call like that, please be careful. But second, and the starting point for today’s discussion, I thought it interesting to hear about multiple cases where people took the initiative to call when something didn’t seem right.
After all, I’ve been told many times by police officials that their effectiveness in preventing crime depends in no small part on residents’ willingness to pick up the phone.
