A roundabout primer

The Union Centre Boulevard area may be seeing more traffic in the near future. Between the West Chester Farmers Market on Saturdays, After-hours @ The Square and other events planned for the Square @ Union Centre, there’s going to be a lot of reasons to turn right off UCB onto Floer Drive and hit the roundabout.

The roundabout is what I want to talk about today.

Call it a public service announcement, but with this one in operation and possibly two more of the traffic structures coming to the township, I thought it would be a good time to talk about how these things work. Read on and learn.

While driving to the farmer’s market last weekend, I watched as a driver in front of me reached the roundabout from the east via Centre Pointe Drive. Apparently confused, she decided to pull a U-turn and back-track to the stoplight.

Thank goodness no one was in the roundabout, or I might have spent the rest of the morning covering a head-on collision - not a pleasant thought.

So here, in a nutshell, is how to navigate a roundabout:

When you reach the roundabout, turn right.

When you reach the street you want to follow, turn right.

If you miss your turn, keep going around - you’ll eventually come back to it (hence the ‘round’ in roundabout)

That’s all there is to it. No stoplights, no idling in traffic, and no crazy driving required. So buckle up, drive safe, and don’t freak out when you see something new on township roads this summer.

I have set through briefings with the Butler County Engineers Office (BCEO). I must say the new roundabout is one of the best idea the engineers came out with. It’s safe, practically no maintenance necessary, and it moves traffic like a clockwork. The old traffic lights require constant upkeep, costly, and you have to sit there (polluting and wasting expensive gasoline)even there is no traffic. Thanks BCEO.
