Much of my posting this week has surrounded Monday’s accident that claimed the life of a two-year-old girl.
Not the kind of thing you want to make a career out of covering, but news isn’t always easy or fun.
I’ve been looking for an answer, something to wrap up this story in a nice, neat package. As I mentioned in Wednesday’s post, that’s not going to happen for most of the people involved, but there is one good thing I’ve found that may come out of this.
West Chester University is a program the township launched in March to foster more resident/government communication. The first session focused on business issues along the Route 42 corridor.
Now, I’ve learned that the township may take the WCU format and use it to drive home safety messages to kids, especially in high-traffic, high-density areas like apartment complexes. Township information officer Barbara Wilson said the idea was on the table, but gained higher priority after Monday’s accident.
When I went to the accident scene Monday, I was struck by the number of kids. I’ve covered news in other apartment communities around here, and I can confirm the sea of youngsters zipping around at North Pointe Townhomes is not unique.
The township’s apartment complexes have lots of kids. Those kids need a place to play, and for too many of them, that means the streets and parking lots in the complexes.
Providing better play space for these kids is a bigger issue than I’m taking on here, but it makes sense, and we need to drive the point home, that you have to be on your game when driving through these areas.
Your car has mirrors. It has windows. It can go fast, but can also go slow. Please keep all these things in mind as you drive this summer, so no one has to go through what the Ross family did this week.
