More on Amari Ross
I hope everybody out there hugged their kids yesterday.
From a news standpoint, the story about Amari Ross’ death is pretty much a done deal. Police ruled it a tragic accident, and the little girl’s family has made arrangements for her funeral.
As the reporter covering the story, I suspect I’ll have a little more to write after Friday’s visitation and funeral. That part of the job stinks. You feel intrusive, in the way, like a vulture. Some reporters are OK with that; for the rest of us, we do what we have to, then move on.
But the people in the stories can’t always do the same. There are lives to put back together, wounds to heal. And with that in mind, I was really impressed by what showed up on our website, in the condolances board we posted along with the story.
Take a look - there are six pages of notes of sympathy from as far away as Richmond, VA and Boston, MA.
The lesson from this accident, and from a tragically similar incident that occurred yesterday in Hillsboro, drive home a clear message: It’s nice out, kids are playing outdoors, and that means both parents and drivers need to step up their awareness of where the kids are.
There’s another lesson, though, that I take away from the wide-ranging sympathy displayed over the last two days. That’s that despite the high speed, broadband world we’re all trying to keep up with, people are still willing to stop for a second to help someone in a bad situation.
It’s just a virtual sympathy guest book, but hopefully it says something about the real world.
