Punchers & Painters returns this weekend
Punchers & Painters, a five-week, multi-event salute to boxing and art in downtown Dayton, opens this Saturday night with “A Celebration of Davey Moore” at the Color of Energy Gallery, 16 Brown Street in the Oregon District.
The 7 - 9 p.m. reception is free and open to the public.
One of the most legendary athletes to come from the Miami Valley, Moore was the Springfield boxer who fought in the 1952 Olympics, won the world featherweight crown and fought all over the world before he died from injuries suffered in a 1963 title bout at Dodger Stadium.
Nationally-acclaimed sculptor Mike Major, who has molded an eight-foot likeness of Moore that will be bronzed and put on display in Springfield, will be on hand at the reception with the statue and some of his other work. Moore’s widow Geraldine will be there, as will several of the Moore children.. There will be a display of photos, artwork and box Punchers & Painters, a five-week, multi-event salute to boxing and art in downtown ing memorabilia.
Sidebar will provide drinks and appetizers.
Other Punchers & Painters events include: “Drake’s Fight Night,” a free outdoor fight show on Fourth Street at Patterson Blvd. on July 16; “An Evening with Buster Douglas” the former world heavyweight champ and the first man to topple the up-to-then invincible Mike Tyson on July 22 at the Color of Energy and on Aug. 12 the Dayton Dragons gala fight show at Fifth Third Field.
