New restaurant opens today in Kettering

KETTERING — The Hawthorn Grill is scheduled to open today for lunch and dinner at 1222 E. Stroop Road.

The new restaurant, owned by Candace Rinke of Springboro, is opening in the building that formerly housed Sopranos restaurant.

Since we first wrote about The Hawthorn Grill two weeks ago, Rinke has decided to hold off on the weekend brunches for a few weeks. So for now, the restaurant will be open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and will be closed Sunday. After brunch service is added in the coming weeks, the restaurant will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, and will open at 9 a.m. rather than 11 a.m. Saturday, Rinke said.

The restaurant’s name was inspired by Hawthorn Hill, the Oakwood mansion that Orville Wright called home for nearly 35 years, and is designed to reflect her desire to establish close ties to the community by using local ingredients and vendors as much as possible, Rinke said.

Rinke has wanted to operate her own restaurant since moving to the Miami Valley five years ago from the Detroit area, where she worked in fine-dining restaurants. Since then, Rinke has worked as a private chef doing business as “The Busy Gourmet.”

The new restaurant owner described the Hawthorn Grill’s menu as “eclectic American’” with touches from her Eastern European ancestry. Dishes will include marinated pork chops, red wine-braised beef short ribs, lamb Bolognese with homemade pasta, and tortilla-encrusted catfish with roasted red pepper-pineapple salsa. It will also offer a vegetarian options, she said.

The Hawthorn Grill seats 90. For more information, call (937) 298-2222.
