Should feds regulate salt content of the food you eat?

The next “food battleground” is shaping up to be the salt content of processed and restaurant foods, according to this story from Nation’s Restaurant News headlined “Talk of sodium regulation boils over” as well as this WebMD story headlined “Experts Urge FDA to Mandate Salt Reduction”.

What role should the federal government play in regulating sodium content of processed foods and restaurant foods?

Welcome to the new world order comrades - we will be controlled in unimaginable ways - corporations will be forced to make changes and pass the cost on to us - and the leadership in this country say it is in our best interest - freedom is diminishing quick - enjoy it why you have it!

I wish people would stop making this a dem, repub issue. Here is the deal, regardless of corp profits, there should not be more of anything in our food that is harmful to our bodies. We should know what is and how much is in our food. Dont forget, when Bush was in office and we were purchasing beef from over seas, he said we did not need to know where it came from. That was outrageous. Thier standards were much lower than ours and did not have to pass our inspections of what that cattle was being fed. For those saying govt is controlling us, hogwash, if you want more salt than what is in your food, get your shaker and have at it. I just want a safe amount in mine and I want the govt to put restrictions on the food industry to keep me informed.

I commented earlier today on this site and neglected to mention my opinion on salt, which was the question of DDN blog site. My opinion: don’t care; except to comment that processed, and Kroger/Meijer/Walmart/etc. use alot, as do all drive through fast bucks, I mean, fast food joints, I think, to cover lack of flavor and substance, due to poor quality of the basic stuff, unhealthy ingredients, chemicals, perfumes, additives and “patented” process. Salt, unless iodized, is good, good for you, and has historically, and universally, been essential to cooking and healthy living. Food without salt is not acceptable in any culture, anywhere. Although Morton’s salt is dreadful, corporate scions should disclose if iodized salt is used. And, for health, not wealth, disclose salt amounts for those who are on restricted diets, much like disclosing for MSG and food allergies.) DMc, my heading to blog here, is short for Dennis McCarthy, me. (Why don’t blogger use real names? Fake food, fake names, faked ideals, faked knowledge, even faked outrage, and politcs….I’ll stop here.)

Bussiness is interested in sales, not health and couldn’t care less if you get high blood pressure and die. People who complain about government the most seem to be the most ignorant and want salt on everything. I don’t.

Sure. Let them regulate salt. I will bring my own salt and season to my taste. But, don’t the feds have enough on their plates. I guess this is another way to grow government. Now we have the salt in your food Czar.

It’s time we all UNITE and tell the government to mind their own business!! I am smart enough to decide things for myself I REALLY DO NOT NEED THEM TO MAKE DECISIONS FOR ME!!

Fake food, that is processed food, like most of what is found in the center aisles of any supermarket, needs all the labeling we, the people, can give it. All fast food should be required to label sources, including meat as sold in most markets and burger joints, the big 3 of U.S. meat has the highest amounts of excrement and ammonia (often over 5%) of any “major country. (Even the poorest of nations will not allow U.S meat to be imported, due to lax oversight. We once had some of the most prized cattle in the world, now even donated meat is considered far too risky, yet many here not only consume, but double size it. Yes, we need government to do what it can to protect people from corporate greed and unhealthy process. P.S. who are these nuts who make fascist and socialist comments here. Not possible to tell, they use made up names to hide behind. I’m Dennis McCarthy. My name is real.

Foods that are low sodium cost more because of the things used to replace it. I cut back salt use in my cooking by simply using sea salt. More taste to it so I use less. But that was MY personal choice. It isn’t right to force people to eat how you think they should. They will put the salt on anyway. Besides, our bodies need at least some to survive. Don’t over do it, but as I said, it’s to each person to eat how they wish and be responsible for how they eat. NOT the governments.

I can’t believe the more the government gets involed with the way I live and the habits that I prefer. Now I’m a law breaker. Sounds just like the old USSR. Australia has more freedoms than this country.

Tricky. If people like salty food, then there should be a way to ling bad habits to the increased cost of healthcare they will undoubtedly incur. Frankly, it comes down to education and providing incentives for eating better and making healthier food, to, in the end, make eating healthy cheaper than eating crappy.

I feel it is everyone’s right to eat what they want. I want those who eat too much and who eat bad food to help me get some social security. The sooner they are laid to rest the better social security will be as long as they pay in to it until they are 59yrold then rip. Let them be fat and out of shape so they can help social security be financially sound! :)

Another case of the govt. trying to live your life for you. ANYTHING in excess is harmful to your health, even vitamins and water, but it is YOUR responsibility to take care of yourself. That said, pass the bacon!

Anyone who complains that corporations only care about the almighty dollar is both oblivious and ignorant. What else should they care about? A business is designed to make money. Salt much like carbon makes the world go round no matter how much it is demonized.

Those who say government should regulate this and that are just too lazy or ignorant to do the reseach for them selves and determine what is good or not good for them. You don’t have to buy foods with high salt content. Let your grocer know what you want, let the corporations know what you want, and let them know how serious you are with your purchasing dollars. Take a little responsibility for your own health. There has been a lot of publicity about various additives, and how certain foods are bad for you, and yet people still buy them. You don’t have to buy fries cooked in trans fat. You don’t have to buy foods high in sodium. You need to take care of yourself and quit whining when others don’t do it for you!

gashouse is right on. Big buisness only cares about the almighty dollar. They don’t care if they poison you as long as you keep eating it and coming back for more. Did you know that over 70% of ground beef is “cleaned” with ammonia to kill E. Coli. Ammonia?!?!?! Still want fries with that?

What is next…the government telling when I need to pee and poo? What if I dont pee for a day, will I be fined? What if I forget to breathe, can I join a government program to pay me to remember to breathe? Or will they imprison me? YIKES!

Yeah nice comment Gunter. Of course they should, if they don’t big Coprs dont care about us, they will keep poisoning us for financial gain. I got it that it should be a personal right what you eat, but if you want to blow your heart with sodium then put it on yourself, I don’t think Corps need to do it for us.
