Pepsi to pull sodas off school shelves worldwide by 2012
PepsiCo plans to remove its full-calorie, sugar-sweetened sodas and drinks from schools around the world by 2012, according to this PepsiCo news release and this Associated Press story. Also, The Consumerist has an interesting piece about it.
The AP story notes that, “The move, aimed at fighting childhood obesity, follows the success of similar changes in the U.S. by PepsiCo and rival Coca-Cola,” apparently in 2006.
Did I miss that entirely? Are there no “regular” Cokes and Pepsis available in local school vending machines?

What’s the use of removing the full-calorie sodas? The aspartame in diet soda is just as unhealthy as drinking soda with real sugar and all the calories! It took the FDA 18 years to completely approve the use of aspartame and they’re still not sure of the negative effects it can cause. Besides the sugar, parents should be worried more about the caffeine their children are drinking. ALL soda should be removed from schools and children should be taught MODERATION.

Why does everyone want to blame soda and fast food for “making” teens so fat? If these kids would just get off their rear ends and engage in some physical activity they could enjoy these things once in awhile.

Why do they need to wait until 2012.If you intend on removing it based on health issues and such, just do it now.No reason to wait.

As a teacher, most of the vending machines I’ve seen in the buildings do not have the traditional soda products but the fruit juice and athletic drinks, which seem to have as much sugar or high fructose corn syrup as the traditional carbonated beverages. But let’s face kids will find a way to drink what they like. I see kids daily drinking huge cups of coffee, which is probably worse than Coke or Pepsi, with caffeine, sugar and fat (from dairy) all rolled up in one.

Pepsi doesn’t have much of a market share for schools like Coke does, at least in this area, so it is really a publicity stunt and surrender to Coke. Drinks with high fructose corn syrup would be pulled out, it is considered to be high calorie.

With only “Original” Pepsi being removed from schools the company isn’t giving up much and then it will be replaced by something Diet, Lo-Cal, No-Cal, etc. Something that has even more artificial sweeteners and ingredients than the original and is even worse for our kids. Token publicity stunt that won’t actually help the health of kids but Will give the ignorant segment of the population a “Warm Fuzzy.”

READ THE ARTICAL,IT SAYS “plans to remove its full-calorie, sugar-sweetened sodas and drink” the only ones of those are the pepsi throw backs. the others are sweetened with high fructose corn syrup, so basically it doent say it goint to do anything. Just free publicity, & try it make it look like theyre doing some good

What will the poor little babies do without their sodas? Probably file a law suit with American Civil Liberties Union. Unfair schooling practices.

They are likely responding to policies around the country limiting fat and calorie contents of foods available to kids at school. I always felt we were selling out our kids, getting so much income off the machines at their expense. I’m glad to see them go.

Pepsi removing soda from schools. I find it hard to believe that a billion dollar company is willing to lose revenue by removing their product from schools. Doesn’t make a lot of sense to decrease your profits…
