New pizza joint near UD welcomes night owls
A new carryout and delivery pizza restaurant, Pie Pizzeria, has opened at 1910 Brown St. near the campus of the University of Dayton.
The new pizza place caters to night owls: Pie Pizzeria stays open until 4 a.m. Thursday through Sunday, and until 3 a.m. Monday through Wednesday. It opens at 11 a.m. daily.
Pie Pizzeria is owned by Craig Hatfield of Dayton, who said he has always wanted to own a restaurant. Pie Pizzeria specializes in New York-style pizza by the slice, and offers 16-inch and 18-inch specialty pizzas with nicknames such as the Brooklyn Brawler, Park Avenue Chicken, Madison Square Garden and Broadway Barbecue. The menu also includes oven-baked sandwiches, pasta dishes and salads.
If those pizza nicknames sound familiar to what’s served at Johnny’s Pizzeria — A Slice of New York in Centerville, they are. Hatfield said he has been friends with Johnny’s co-owner Johnny Rivera for 10 years, and Rivera was behind the counter helping Hatfield on Thursday afternoon, Nov. 5.
Pie Pizzeria employs 16 people. It is located just north of the Brown Street-Irving Avenue intersection, near the Pine Club restaurant. For more information, call (937) 228-4743.

Totally tried the pizza at PIE Pizzeria, first time drunk, and it was great, second time sober and it was AWESOME. We (my friends and I) have had it five times total. It is seriously the best I have ever tasted, and they take flyer express.

Finally there’s another choice for 3rd. shift workers! Hundreds of people work over night shifts (7p-7a and 11p-7a) in MVH, Kettering Hospital and Hospice of Dayton. You can’t leave and go through late night drive-thru, these folks really depend on good food with delivery. (and they tip well to show that appreciation.) Now, if only we could get late night Chinese like NYC that would be perfection! I remember Papa Chins (before the downtown Chins opened) on Watervliet. It was dine-in, carry-out during the day and at night it became a venue for bands. They sold egg rolls and homemade potato chips till 2am. It was great.

Hahahahaha Jeremy, I like your style. So very true too. Being open late for ANY restaurant around a campus is an instant cash cow!

You guys really need to try Kramer’s (on Irving). May look like just a beer joint from the outside, but they have the best pizza I’ve ever tasted. We get cravings for it often.

Cousin Vinny’s is not a good pizza. It’s chef boyardee pizza. It’s fairly cheap but don’t act like it’s something special. Pie Pizza has a 6 slice pizza for 10 bucks. The slices are huge. Good luck to them.

The late night pizza joints at Ohio University that sold pizza by the slice were always swamped after the bars closed. I would expect the same around most college campuses. I hope this place does well!

Bravo! The U.D. area needs a nice Pizzeria! Years ago, Millano’s Pizza & Subs, now gone, was an ‘Oasis’ for hungry U.D. area folks. It is nice to see good Pizza, etc.,return! Let’s support this effort & enjoy some great Pizza! Don’t forget the great Pine Club, close by!

Dayton does not have anything close to a late night dining scene. This is a step in the right direction. Carl needs to medicate.

I think most food places around UD would make a killing if they were open later on weekends. I’m looking at you Chipotle.

Give me a break, Carl. UD students will love a late pizza joint. Papa John’s closes too early for those late-night parties and Vinny’s isn’t reliable enough on arrival times. I hope the pizza is good and I’ll continue to support businesses around the University!
