New, locally owned steakhouse to open in Troy
It’s been just a little more than a year since we told you about CJ’s HighMarks Restaurant in Troy shutting its doors. Now 44-year-old Kent Wolters of Tipp City has leased the building at 1750 W. Main St. with the intention of opening a fine-dining restaurant there tentatively named Kent’s Steakhouse.
The projected opening date is sometime in September, Wolters said this morning, July 1.
Wolters works as a district manager for Crown Equipment Corp. of New Bremen and also races sprint cars at Eldora.
“I’ve always wanted to be in the restaurant business,” Wolters said. He noticed the “for lease” sign on the former HighMarks facility and worked out a deal.
Wolters said he’s unsure of the restaurant name, since “Kent’s Steakhouse” may be too limiting to describe a menu that is expected to include seafood and pasta dishes in addition to steaks.
“We’ll have premium food at a good value, and a full wine list,” Wolters said. The restaurant will have a full liquor license, he said.
He hopes to hire a general manager in the next few days and will then move forward with renovations.
The president of CJ’s HighMarks chose not to renew the lease last year for the restaurant that opened in 1990.

We had a party of 8 and we all loved the food. My husband is very hard to please when it comes to steak and he thought it was worth the money. The chicken (in all the ways we ordered it) had fantasic flavor. Even the three year old loved her chicken strips! She is harder to please than her father!

i cannot reccomend this steakhouse. It should be renamed the expensive dog crap house. If you like blackend steak you are in the right place. The burnt flavor was true to taste thank god for the napkins to spit it out in,the prime rib no flavor, the baked potato was really good and i reccomend that but i could have gone to wendys and gotten one lots cheaper. The elevator music about put us all to sleep. I don’t think that ruby tuesdays, outback or applebees has any worries,a hot dog would have been better, and cheaper.

I’ll miss Arang, but I actually prefer Sakai. Tin Roof, eh? With all the available land and buildings, they had to undercut a long existing business. Nice.

Good luck, but sounds to me that he already has too many irons in the fire. Hope he can depend on a good manager, as he won’t have time to do it right himself.

Another steakhouse in Troy is GREAT IMHO. What Miami County REALLY NEEDS is more family oriented activities! If I had the money to invest, I would put up a Malibi Grand Prix, batting cages and Indoor Game room. There is a PERFECT spot for it just to the North of Outback Steakhouse. The would make someone a BUNCH of MONEY!!! Anyone want to loan me some now ?? :>)

For Oh No — Arang’s closed after the Tin Roof was successful in bidding for the city-owned lease at the old boat house, offering a higher percent of the profits to the city than did Arang.

Good news to hear, Miami County has some excellent dining. I have lived in Troy nearly all of my life and I love it here. Would not trade it for the world!!!

Miami Co. does have some excellent locally owned restaurants-The Caroline, El Sombrero, Coldwater Cafe. La Piazza and Harrison’s have Montgomery Co. owners who own other restaurants and are not chains. We’ll try Wolters place when he opens. I wish his good luck!

Might want to consider another name since “Kent’s” is very close to “Ken’s Steakhouse,” which is a national brand that also sells salad dressings in national grocery stores. There’s a good chance the national chain would file a trademark infringement lawsuit. Maybe not, but why take a chance?

if you want local miami county food, go to the new steak place where arangs was. i’m sorry i don’t remember the name, but the guy that owns it uses local beef and veges. and lives up in the fletcher area. you can’t get any more home grown than that!

Troy is in desperate need of local fare and not chain/ franchise restaurants. Good luck to Kent. P.S. I’m Miami County born and bred as well.

Joker: you might consider that many of us Trojans cannot afford $30 steaks a-la-carte (i.e. at Flemming’s). Additionally, Outback is acceptable if you can tolerate mass produced chain food but the money leaves town for corporate HQ! Looking forward to a new, independent, local, affordable steakhouse in Troy!

Have you tried the ostrich filet at Coldwater Cafe, Joker? I’m glad for this as I like to have plenty of options driving from Dayton to Detroit every month. I also like to try a different place each time, so good for Kent Wolters.

Miami County, born and bred. Apparently you don’t get out much, mikey. Troy has Outback, which is not that bad. The Caroline downtown on the square is not that bad. Ever try Cold Water Cafe in Tipp? Not bad either. There are plenty places in Miami County to get a decent steak. You have to get out and find them. If you want a good filet, try Flemings in Dayton. Troy won’t get close to that!
