Denny’s to cut salt from menu
The restaurant chain Denny’s will lower the sodium content in many of its menu items, according to Nation’s Restaurant News.
Among the items stripped of some of their salt and sodium content: hash browns, shrimp skewers and cheese sauce.
And these reformulations weren’t limited to the “big-boy” menu: Denny’s told the food-service trade publication that it eliminated some higher-sodium items from its kids’ menu, “replacing them with more healthful items such as fruits and vegetables.”
Now, this is certainly a commendable, responsible action on Denny’s part. It will give diners the option of how much salt to put on their food, and for those with high blood pressure or other medical conditions exacerbated by sodium intake, that’s important.
But I know what I’m going to do if my hash browns arrive at the table devoid of salt, so keep those salt shakers topped off.
And another thing: The Nation’s Restaurant News story notes that, “All of the lower-sodium items will be available at all 1,500 Denny’s restaurants in June.” June? I know Denny’s is a big chain and all, but does it really take four months to implement these recipe tweaks?

Lets see here. Nobody is holding a gun to peoples heads to go to Denny’s. So there’s all this winning and crying about salt in there food and how long its going to take to quit putting it in the food. I say let them put all the salt they want to in the food. If you don’t like it don’t go. Or better yet let’s have the salt police close them down because people are to dumb to make a choice. Or want the goverment to make it for them. Goverment is going to make all our decisions anyway, so might as well do it here to.

Had to resort to name-calling, Mike? “Snarky”? “Immature”? You left out “Angry”. If anyone misses the salt from the food at Denny’s they can always go to Bob Evans on Dorothy Lane and have the home fries on the breakfast menu. I’ve never had anything saltier in any restaurant.

Good for Denney’s! Hopefully more chains follow suit! I’ve been on a low sodium diet for 7 years, and once you purge yourself of the salt you don’t miss it. Many other healthy seasonings can be used to add flavor.

“I know Denny’s is a big chain and all, but does it really take four months to implement these recipe tweaks?” Denny’s is doing a good thing by limiting sodium. However, the snarky concluding comment makes the writer appear immature.

I wish more people did! Salt raises blood pressure. If you want salt, that’s what a shaker is for. It’s impossible to subtract salt once you put it in.

the problem is if you take all the salt out of the production the food is going to taste like crap (ever try low sodium/low fat cream of chicken soup?). no matter how much salt you put on it at the table you won’t be able to fix it. that and if you have good food coming out of the kitchen people won’t use salt at the table as much (where most of the over salting happens)

I think it’s a great idea. The reason there is a salt shaker on the table is to allow you to choose how much to use. What is not a choice is how much they add in the kitchen. And I agree that it shouldn’t take 4 months to reduce the salt, but they’ll probably want to do lots of taste testing first to decide where the lowest amount that people don’t refuse to eat is.
