SPRINGFIELD — The Greenon High School cross country team played the role of rescue rangers on Monday.

The team was practicing at Coach Kim Wise’s farm, located between Yellow Springs and Enon, when they noticed a Great Horned Owl trapped in netting covering a chicken coup.

“The owl must’ve been trying to fly in to get the birds,” Wise said.

The team was practicing between two cornfields, which they call ‘The Runway’. When they returned from a run, they noticed the owl was stuck.

“It was half-in and half-out of the coup and its talons were out,” Wise said. “A couple of the kids wanted to try to get the bird out themselves and I’m just imagining eye balls getting scratched out.”

Wise’s farm supports a CSA (community supported agriculture) which sells organic vegetables, Smaller Footprint Farm in Yellow Springs. One of the farmers was able to pull the owl to safety.

“It’s wing was definitely damaged, but its eyes were fine,” Wise said. “The kids were worried something was wrong with its eyes.”

The owl was taken to the Glen Helen Raptor Center, where he’ll be nursed back to help.

“They were pretty positive he was going to pull through,” Wise said. “The kids were definitely concerned about it. I’m glad we were able to get him out safely.”
