Beals’ approach helps Buckeyes stay focused

From the Columbus Dispatch:

Drew Rucinski thought he knew what he and his Ohio State teammates were in for after seeing the terse message written on the dry erase board in the clubhouse on April 7.

“It said, ‘Shorts, turf shoes and no spikes,’” he said. “Everyone said, ‘Man, we’re going to be running miles and miles.’”

The night before, the Buckeyes played as if they wanted to be somewhere else in making five errors in a 12-4 loss to Miami University, a Mid-American Conference team.

First-year coach Greg Beals tore into them in the hallway before they could even stow their equipment. That lack of focus and drive, he said, was unacceptable under his watch.

But something strange played out once the players reported for practice in left field.

“Coach told the six seniors to pick sides,” Rucinski said. “I said if we were going to run that I would pick guys who are fast. Then I knew something was up when we were told to pick managers and trainers, too.”

Complete story.
