The Wizard speaks 1/19
Last night’s Graham boys game was fun, and not just for the near upset by Kenton Ridge.
Northwestern University football coach Pat Fitzgerald was there to see Falcons star and future Wildcat Nick VanHoose in action. He didn’t disappoint, scoring 20 points, many of which came in the second half.
After the game, the College Football Hall of Famer was impressed with Graham’s ability to shut down the much bigger Cougars squad. I waited for Graham coach Brook Cupps to finish his conversation with VanHoose’s future coach after the game.
When he came over, Cupps simply said: “How cool is that?”
Pretty cool.
I had to wait a few minutes to leave the house today to see Mel Kiper’s latest NFL mock draft. A few selections seemed like great fits: Alabama’s Julio Jones heading to St. Louis, and Illinois’ Mikel LeShoure going to the Patriots. Kiper had former Heisman Trophy winners Cam Newton (No. 10 Washington) and Mark Ingram (No. 16 Miami) going in the first round.
Kiper had the Bengals selecting Clemson’s Da’Quan Bowers at No. 4. He’d be a great pick, teaming up with Carlos Dunlap at defensive end. But history tells us the Bengals will move in a different direction. If there’s need or a great pick and that’s what the draft experts see, we typically go the opposite direction. I see Cincinnati taking WR A.J. Green at No. 4 or the best cornerback on the board, both need positions as they’ll likely lose Chad Ochocinco and Jonathan Joseph to free agency.
Greenon grad Allie Turner is improving everyday at Morehead State. The Lady Eagles are 13-5 this season. Turner had a career-high 24 points in the team’s 85-69 victory over Southeast Missouri, nailing six 3-pointers. They’ve won 9 of their last 11 games. Their coach, Tom Hodges, was also featured on ESPN College Gameday for his crazy suits made by the same company who provides John Daly’s golf attire. Click here for the must-watch video.
Wittenberg’s Jaclyn Willoughby went off the other day in the Tigers victory over Kenyon, scoring 33 points, including a school record 27 in the second half. If you’re wondering, it wasn’t a fluke. Willoughby had a very good high school career at Houston, helping the Wildcats advance to the D-IV District Finals as a junior, along with Wittenberg teammate Kim Replogle, also a Houston grad. They lost to Southeastern in a very tough game in 2009.
Thank goodness the Reds re-signed Joey Votto. Someday, he’ll play in Toronto, but it’s nice to have him for three more years. My co-worked David Jablonski went to the Reds playoff game last fall, and we’re hoping to go to a few more. Without Votto, that seems impossible.
