The Wizard speaks 1/6
My son, the eight-month-old little Wizard, Christian, is sleeping upstairs in the Cooper homestead this morning. I’ll get in a few thoughts here before he wakes up.
Big performances: Last night was a big one for area girls basketball teams. KR picked up a big win against Tippecanoe. I must’ve been a jinx because I had covered the last five losses to the Red Devils. They’ll have the homecourt advantage when they face off again on Saturday, Feb. 5. The matchup is the best girls rivalry in the area.
Tecumseh’s Bianca Quisenberry is one of the top players in the state, and she’s just a sophomore. She went for 44 last night against Shawnee, the second time she’s topped 40 this year. 50 awaits.
Big congrats: Kudos to Wittenberg sophomore Eli Pavlatos who saw his first varsity action last night for the Tigers. He scored three points in a blowout of Oberlin. I featured Pavlatos in a feature on injured seniors a few years back, when he hurt his knee at SE as senior two years go. It’s been a long road back from injury, and I’m glad to see Eli getting some action at Wittenberg.
Random thoughts: I know most fans are upset to see Marvin Lewis back, but I’m more excited to see Ochocinco’s time in Cincy come to an end. Don’t get me wrong, I was the biggest Chad fan for many years. I still am. But his time has come. The Bengals need to hand the team to Carson Palmer, and the only way to do that is to let Chad go. I’m sure Chad will flourish in a new environment.
The Whiff: Did anyone see Sportscenter this morning? If not, check out one of the worst hockey penalty shots you’ll ever see. http://tinyurl.com/29qrv9n
BCS mess: I’m a BCS hater. Why can’t we just have playoffs? It’s all about the money. And the waiting. It seems like the bowls get pushed back farther and farther each season. The D-II title game isn’t even until Friday. The Oregon-Auburn matchup will be a good one, but it feels like we’re waiting forever for it. I’m more disappointed by the death of New Year’s Day. Not enough games, and one on free TV. If you can’t afford cable, sorry. You get stuck watching Penn State and Florida in the Outback Bowl. That’s a shame.
We’ll be back tomorrow with more on the latest Wizard column, the Urbana-Graham boys hoops game and more.
