Springfield baseball team off to 3-0 start

Three games into the season, Springfield High School’s baseball team is keeping its scorekeepers busy: 35 runs, 42 hits, in 15 innings at the plate.

The Wildcats are 3-0 after beating Northeastern 10-0 on Monday, Kenton Ridge 10-8 on Tuesday and Catholic Central 15-5 on Wednesday.

“We’re hitting the ball well,” coach Rob Cassell said. “What’s nice is on different nights, different guys have stepped up.”

Jordan Moore and Kris Moss each drove in three runs Wednesday. Trey DePriest had five RBIs Tuesday.

Springfield has committed only two errors in its first three games. With the win over KR, it avenged North’s 1-0 loss to KR in 2008.

“Anytime you beat a program like KR, it’s a boost to the program,” Cassell said. “It was good game. KR has got a good team again. They always seem to find the ballplayers.”

Tigers pick up first win of the season

The West Liberty-Salem High School softball team picked up its first win of the season on Tuesday, March 31, beating Catholic Central 14-0.

The Tigers lost their season opener, but are no 1-0 in the Ohio Heritage Conference after Tuesday’s win.

WLS pitchers Emily Detwiler and Alyssa Neff combined for a 5-inning no-hitter. Becka Peterson hit a grand slam.

WLS advanced to the Division III state tournament in 2008 after going through the main portion of the regular season undefeated. While going undefeated won’t happen this year, the Tigers are one of the area’s elite programs.
