Watch out: walleyes biting on crankbaits at C.J. Brown
The latest Fish Ohio report, produced by the Ohio Division of Wildlife, says fishing is still strong at C.J. Brown Reservoir.
Here’s the entire report from C.J. Brown:
“A few walleye are being caught by anglers using crankbaits, jigs with plastic bodies or curly tails, small spinners, or live minnows, leaches, or night crawlers on a #6 long shanked hook as bait. Good curly tail color choices are white, orange, pink, or chartreuse. Fish by slowly jigging, trolling or drifting baits in 10 to 15 foot depths. Anglers report that the most successful bait has been silver or gold blade baits. Anglers report walleyes are being caught in the main lake river channel, around structure, and over the humps. The best fishing is in the very early morning hours. Most walleye are undersized fish but some legal fish are being caught. REMEMBER all walleye less than 15 inches long must be immediately released back into the lake. Channel catfish are being caught by anglers using shad, shrimp, night crawlers, and chicken livers in the upper end of the lake. Fish the bait tight line or slowly drift the bait along the bottom in three to six foot depths.”

The Fish Ohio Report August 19, 2009
CENTRAL OHIO Alum Creek Lake (Delaware County) - Smallmouth bass are being caught in this lake north of Columbus. Using crankbaits and spinner baits, target the main and secondary lake points where riprap or hard bottom is present. Saugeye can be caught in the same areas. Also try trolling in front of the beach at dawn and dusk. Crappies are being found around wood in 10 to 15 feet of water; use jigs or minnows. Crappies will move into shallower water as temperatures decrease this fall. Muskie can provide good action this time of year. Troll crankbaits along the points and dam. Deer Creek (Fayette and Pickaway counties) - Fish will become active as water temperatures decrease in the next few weeks. For crappie, target woody cover in the old creek channel. Start deep and move to shallower water as water temperatures cool; try minnows or jigs suspended under a bobber. Largemouth bass can be caught on spinner baits, crankbaits and plastics. Fish shoreline cover, secondary points and riprap. Bluegills can be caught on wax worms and night crawlers.
NORTHWEST OHIO Scioto River (Hardin County) - Channel catfish are being caught by fishing night crawlers on the bottom or under a bobber. The best locations are the T.R. 150 Bridge and the C.R. 245 Bridge. Blanchard River (Hardin County) - Smallmouth bass have been biting on light colored rapalas. The best spot is downstream of the T.R. 183 Bridge. Killdeer Reservoir (Wyandot County) - The water temperature is 78 degrees and the water is clear. Smallmouth bass are being caught in the early mornings by drifting leeches or trolling crayfish crankbaits just of the bottom. The east shore has been producing the best catches. Channel catfish are being caught as well. Still fishing night crawlers at night on the bottom is working great. The west shore is the best spot. Upper Sandusky Reservoir #2 (Wyandot County) - The water temperature is 77 degrees and the water is clear. Largemouth bass are being caught in the mornings and evenings by fishing worms under a slip bobber or by casting spinner baits and buzzbaits. Fish the flooded timber areas. Sunfish are also being caught here in the mid-mornings. Fish wax worms under a slip bobber just off of the bottom. The deep water northwest of the boat ramp has been the hot spot. Killdeer Pond #33 (Wyandot County) - The water temperature is 82 degrees and the water is cloudy. Largemouth bass are being caught during the mornings and evenings by casting buzzbaits or fishing fathead minnows under a slip bobber. Anywhere along the shoreline will produce good results. Sunfish are being caught as well. Fishing wax worms under a slip bobber around mid-morning is working well. The best spot is the deep water west of the west pier. NORTHEAST OHIO Atwood Lake (Carroll & Tuscarawas Counties) - White bass have been active and are easy to catch. Watching for surface disturbances or circling birds can reveal the location of feeding schools of these fish, which may then be caught on a variety of small, minnow-imitating baits such as silver shad raps or spoons. Division of Wildlife sampling during 2004 found excellent numbers of white bass from 10 to 14-inches. Numerous channel catfish are also present in Atwood Lake, with most fish over 16-inches in length, and many exceeding two feet long. Catfish are also biting well, and can be caught off the bottom near structure such as points, humps, and creek channels on a variety of natural baits. Night crawlers, cut fish, chicken liver, and shrimp can all prove effective. Tappan Lake (Harrison County): The largemouth bass bite has been good during low light periods. Spinner baits fished around fallen trees have been productive, as have Texas-rigged plastic worms fished around rip-rap. Try bright flashy spinner bait patterns like chartreuse or white to mimic baitfish, or dark plastic worms. West Branch Lake (Portage County) - West Branch Lake offers a variety of quality angling opportunities. Muskellunge have been biting periodically. These large fish are suspended over deep water, and may be caught trolling large (6 to 10-inches) medium running crankbaits in baitfish patterns. Walleye have been biting well in deeper water as well. Jigging with curly tailed grubs or trolling worm harnesses in orange or chartreuse near structure in the 15 to 20-foot depth range has been productive. Numbers of walleye are fair, but most walleye caught will be over 15-inches, with a good proportion over 20-inches. Largemouth bass are being caught in weedbeds from five to 10 feet deep. Texas rigged 6 to 8-inch plastic worms in dark colors, and white or green pumpkin colored soft plastic jerkbaits have begun to produce fish.
SOUTHWEST OHIO C. J. Brown Reservoir (Clark County) - A few walleye are being caught by anglers using crankbaits, jigs with plastic bodies or curly tails, small spinners, or live minnows, leaches, or night crawlers on a #6 long shanked hook as bait. Fish the bait tight line or slowly drift the bait along the bottom in three to six foot depths. Caesar Creek (Clinton, Greene, and Warren counties) - Anglers casting in-line spinners and crankbaits are catching muskellunge. If you catch a musky please report your catch to the Division of Wildlife’s Musky Angler Log at http://www.ohiodnr.com/muskielog/welcome.aspx . The Muskie Angler Log was developed in partnership with the Ohio Muskie Anglers as a resource for Ohio Muskie anglers and to support muskie management efforts in Ohio by providing valuable muskie catch data to the Ohio Division of Wildlife. Saugeye anglers are catching a few 15 to 18 inch fish from six to 15 feet depths, but most fish are small. Troll medium or deep diving crankbaits along submerged points or underwater humps. Cast or drift with live night crawlers on a bottom bouncing harness rig, or use a lead head jig tipped with a piece of worm. Fish in the early morning and early evening hours. Channel catfish are being caught by shore anglers using nightcrawlers, shrimp, and chicken livers. Fish the bait tight line along the bottom in five to eight foot depths.
SOUTHEAST OHIO Monroe Lake (Monroe County) - Fishing pressure has been light at this lake with the recent hot weather. Most anglers are seeking channel catfish at night using night crawlers. Some largemouth bass are being taken from the limited fishing effort observed. The preferred methods would include using night crawlers and plastic worms rigged Texas-style. Though night fishing is popular with catfish anglers, night angling for bass may be a good tactic during the hot summer season; try using surface lures for some top-water action. Piedmont Lake (Belmont County) - Saugeye will become more active after cool fronts move through the area. Successful saugeye anglers have been throwing crankbaits and spinner baits along the outside weed beds in eight feet of water. Catches of channel catfish have also been favorable. Tight-line fishing using night crawlers, cut bait, and chicken livers has been most productive.

Western Basin
Good walleye fishing was reported the week of 8/10 with the best reports coming from the gravel pit W of West Sister Island, nearshore off of Crane Creek and Metzger’s Marsh, around Niagara Reef, and W of West Reef and Rattlesnake Island. Drifters are using bottom bouncers with worm harnesses or are casting mayfly rigs. Trollers were catching fish on worm harnesses fished with inline weights or bottom bouncers, and also on spoons fished with dipsy divers or jet divers.
Yellow perch fishing is improving. The best areas have been the gravel pit W of West Sister Island, 1.5 miles E of the Toledo water intake, 20 of water off of Wards canal, around Kelleys Island, and off of Cedar Point. Perch spreaders or crappie rigs with shiners fished near the bottom produce the most fish.
Central Basin Walleye fishing has been good in open water around the weather buoy at the N end of the sandbar between Vermilion and Lorain, and also nearshore from Huron to Vermilion. Excellent fishing continues with many boat limits 7-12 miles north-northeast of Geneva in 70-74 feet and 7-10 miles north of Ashtabula in 70-74 feet. Trollers are using watermelon, green, yellow jacket, perch, orange, pink, or blackjack worm harnesses and spoons, off of dipsy divers. Anglers are fishing down 45-60 feet.
Yellow perch fishing has been good in 44-52 feet northwest of Edgewater State Park, 50-65 feet northeast of Wildwood State Park, 35-55 feet northwest and northeast of Fairport, 55-60 feet northeast of Ashtabula and 55-60 feet north of Conneaut. Perch spreaders or perch and crappie rigs with shiners fished as far up as 6 feet off the bottom have been producing the most fish.
Steelhead fishing has been very good this past week with the best location 14-18 miles northwest off Fairport in 75-78 feet (the Cleveland Hole) while trolling using black and purple or silver and blue spoons. Anglers are fishing down 45-60 feet just above or in the thermocline.
White Bass fishing has been good from the shore at the Eastlake CEI wall, Grand River and Fairport Harbor piers. Anglers are using agitators with blue and silver spoons and jigs tipped with twister tails. Fish range from 7-11 inches. Boat anglers watch for the gulls feeding on the surface - these are usually good spots to try for white bass which are also feeding on the same schools of emerald shiners.
Based on the nearshore marine forecast the water temperature is 74 off of Toledo and 73 off of Cleveland.
Anglers are encouraged to always wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved personal flotation device while boating.
