Northeastern schedules community meeting for South Vienna
Northeastern Local Schools officials will hold a meeting in South Vienna Wednesday, July 14, to address questions about the upcoming bond issue as well as other concerns about the district, according to the district’s communications consultant Linda Wallace.
The meeting is the latest of several held in local communities, including Catawba and Northridge, to meet in small groups to hear from residents about their concerns and answer questions.
The South Vienna meeting begins at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Ritchie Brothers Auctioneers, 200 Ritchie Dr. The meeting will be on the second floor of the building in the welcome center.
Northeastern voters will decide Aug. 3 on a $58.4 million, 28-year bond issue on the Aug. 3 ballot.
If approved, the bond issue would cost $237 a year for the owner of a $100,000 home.
The bond issue would raise 59 percent of the cost to build new schools; the remaining 41 percent would come from the Ohio Schools Facilities Commission.
This is Northeastern’s last chance to pass the local portion of the funding before it risks losing the state’s offer.
After voters twice rejected bond issues at the ballot, officials modified the plan based on community input sessions. The new plans calls for two pre-kindergarten through fourth-grade buildings — one in South Vienna and one in Northridge — and a 5th through 12th grade building at the site of Northeastern High School. Kenton Ridge would be remodeled and used as a 5th to 8th grade middle school with an addition for 9th through 12th grades.

Just a thought - if the building gets built - there will be no funds to operate, according to the current operating budget and current levy. Where do they think this money will come from - another levy or the money tree? Just a thought.

They bull headedly tried to push this through not once but twice with a predictable NO. Now with one chance left and everyone upset they say we are listening to the tax payer / community. Why didn’t they listen first instead of “WE want it,You pay for it”. What’s next if it doesn’t pass, then what?

To: By a no voter so far - I REALLY do understand your frustration but they are listening NOW! Be there, ask your tough questions then make a decision regarding the $41,000,000 badly needed dollars for our schools and community.

NELSD do you really believe you can pass the levy, then come back and ask for more funds to keep schools operating? We, many of the NO voters have tried to tell you we cannot afford more taxes! I feel the levy keeps getting put on the ballot at special elections believing many voters will miss going to the polls. This shows how sneaky the board is. Politics at it’s finest!

I’m voting ‘yes’. I easily spend $237+ on stupid stuff as it is. At least my money is going to something worthwhile. It’s not the kids’ fault and they’re the ones being punished with lacking facilities. It’ll be a sad day if this doesn’t pass.

WELL I AM NOT PAYING MORE. IF I EASILY SPEND $237.00 ON STUPID STUFF THAN SO BE IT. BUT I AM NOT PAYING ANYMORE IN TAXES AND BESIDES THAN THEY WILL WANT OPERATING COSTS SO MORE TAXES!!! ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!! NEW SCHOOLS ARE NOT NEEDED TO EDUCATE A CHILD!!! FIX WHAT YOU HAVE.

This issue is not tied to what we want for our children, all caring parents want the best education possible. Right now with record high unemployment numbers and the worry that your job may be next to be cut no one can afford extra taxes right now. The State should extend the date to apply for building funds until our economy is better. The State cannot afford to spend anymore funds either. Right now NE should concentrate on cleaning up their personnel. Teachers who are caught sexually abusing students and rumors that another teacher was caught viewing sexually explicit websites on his school computer twice before being fired does not make me want to give you more money. Clean up your house and then come back to me.

Why don’t they hold the meeting in the school so everyone can see the horrible conditions that they students have to go to school in? I will continue to support the levy only because we need to have our learn with today technology and we certainly do not have that. We don’t even have the option to have a computer lab not in the library along with another class room and offices. Lunches in the NR school building starts at 10:20 a.m. so they can get elementary school students and middle school students served. How crazy is that when they start their day at 7:50 a.m. and don’t get out of school until 2:15?

Why don’t they split the districts. I live around Kenton Ridge, why should I have to pay for some kids to go to school in South Vienna and Northeastern. It’s about 7-10 miles away.Get a grip.P.S. I live in the city limits and I’m in the Northeastern school district. What the deal on that!

Whatever happened to the suggestion that they tear down Kenton Ridge and put a landfill on the site? The city of Springfield needs to annex Northridge.

Very funny Ronald. Only problem with your suggestion is that then there wouldn’t be a good high school in the district

The east side of the school district is a bunch of stupid hicks that always votes against the levies. They should tear down the South Vienna school and put the landfill there!

It is unfortunate everyone is so angry but I understand this is an emotional issue. Money from the State is a result of tobacco settlement $. When it is gone the state will not get more. As we all know the country has hit hard economic times. Everyone is looking to do what is best for our community. Eventually we will need new buildings but these will last a while longer and we will all pay the entire amount for new buildings. Please don’t think the people who work at taking care of these buildings don’t do a good job. They work hard at making it the best of what we have and they are good people. It is a shame to pass on the shared portion the state has available.

I hear so many people say they are voting “no” in the upcoming election. I have to wonder why so many people are ignorant. If this doesn’t pass, we lose this large amount of assistance. If the state comes in and forces us to rebuild, guess what we pay it all! My children deserve better facilities to learn. There are great teachers in the district, and those that want to throw up about sexual predators in our school are only focussing on those few bad eggs that are unfortunately everywhere. Giving our children new facilities would enable them to get a better education. I notice alot of older people are saying they dont want it because they cant afford it. I understand that these are hard economic times, but these children will and we all currently pay to keep medicare and social security going. There are so many options out there for assistance. Also to those that are saying that the buildings are good enough, come take tours of these schools. If you do, you will see the conditions, heat, and uncomfortable environment. I ask you, would you go to a nursing home that looks like this? These children will be future leaders of our world. I dont know about you, but the idea of these children giving us our meds in the future makes me hope that they can tell the difference between 0.5 mg and 5mg. I also love those people telling others to vote no for the levy before going to their other homes in warmer climates.Come on people, if you can afford more than one home you can afford a couple hundred dollars a year! i also dont understnd the parents coming out from KR saying that we should split the schools. KR tends to get first dibs for repairs while NE suffers. As far as South Vienna being stupid hicks, many of us our professional people that certainly aren’t missing teeth and wearing torn overalls. There are voters in all areas voting no. I hope you all open your eyes and see that to vote no will ultimately hurt us all. Property taxes will decrease at least 10-20%. Also I know so many of you are saying you dont plan on selling, but one day your neighbors might. This may be the type of people you dont want living next door to you. Think about that and vote YES

I understand that money is tight right now. It is for all of us. Truly, if you look at the numbers, it would cost between $20-$40 a month for most of us to fund these new schools. Our kids deserve to be competitive with those in other districts. Our schools may have been fine for those of you who have already graduated, but they are not fine now. Why would you no voters not want the best for our kids? I am not only a resident of Northeastern, but a parent of children in the district and a teacher. We have the greatest staff that has made due with what we have to the best of our abilities, but why not give the students every advantage possible? Our prisons are better equipped than our schools. Think about that. Please vote yes and support our community and our students.
