Union seeks reinstatement for coaches
Greenon teachers have filed request for a writ of mandamus seeking reinstatement for two football coaches who were fired over allegations of harassing players, according to records filed with the Clark County Clerk of Courts.
The Greenon Local Schools Board of Education voted unanimously at a special meeting in June to begin termination proceedings of supplemental contracts for Head Coach Tim Hale and Assistant Coach Tad Steinbrink, according to meeting minutes. Hale and Steinbrink were accused of “engaging in a pattern of behavior designed to intimidate and humiliate certain students,” according to the resolution.
The Greenon Federation of Teachers filed an appeal Nov. 18 seeking reinstatement for both men, claiming that the termination is invalid because the board of education never finalized the proceedings in public session as stipulated in the June resolution, according to the complaint.
Greenon Local Schools argues that the terminations were finalized in an agreement signed by Superintendent Lori Lytle and federation President Barb Jenkins. The July 14 Memorandum of Understanding stipulates that the June 6 board vote would “be construed as terminating all of their supplemental contracts.”
UPDATE: The union withdrew the memorandum because it violated Ohio law regarding the employment of public school teachers, said Jenkins.
“It violates the… law and we cannot abide by that understanding,” she said, citing a teacher’s right for employment to be voted on in public session at a scheduled board meeting.

If there was such a problem why did the union wait four months to file a law suit—so the coach’s wife can be on the board when the case is heard in court. It is time for the district to heal and move forward with the real work—educating the children.

For the betterment of who……not the boys that were involved in these cases! It is sad when educating students is not the focus!

Evidently you either have heard the one side you want to hear or are ignorant about the FACTS of the case. Even the assigned investigator found the “harrassment/intimidation” did not merit the punishment received…

What ever happened to innocent until proven guilty? What ever happened to supporting your staff and standing being your employees and co-workers? If the investigator found that these charges did not merit the punishment that was received, why were these coaches stripped of their position as football coaches based on false accusations? If all it takes is for a child to run home to mommy/daddy and claim that these class-act individuals are “harassing” them… we have a LOT to fear ahead of us! What happened to dealing with the punishment given…?!? If these student-athletes knew that they were not to be attending a camp during THEIR scheduled practice times for the team….they OBVIOUSLY had to have known there was going to be some sort of punishment for missing practice….HOW IS THIS HARASSMENT?! I fear the future if the parents cannot reprimand their children for choosing to not stick to a commitment that they have made… Hale and Steinbrink are two VERY classy individuals who have completely turned around the Greenon football program. I have seem them kick off star football players for using inappropriate language.. This is absolutely insane and heart-wrenching that these two amazing individuals have had to live this horrible experience and publicity… It’s time for this to end.

Adult men who say terrible negative things to strangers in public about the children they are supposed to mentor are not classy individuals of any type. Since when does being a football coach trump being an educator? Since when is having a winning coach more important than having a decent guardian for our children? The abuse these boys endured, and continue to endure, because they wanted to attend a better program than the non-mandatory program at Greenon is fundamentally wrong. The fact that the former coaches have taken no public steps to stop the abuse these families have been enduring shows exactly what sort of character they have. Good choir directors, band directors, art teachers, theater directors, and teachers and coaches value students’ self-betterment and do not call them names, intimidate them, or demonstrate some sense of entitlement just because they win.

THEY ARE AMAZING TEACHERS AS WELL!!! Ask some of the students that are in Steinbrink’s classes versus other teachers that teach the same subject. Ask what grades they are getting as opposed to the other teachers. I have never heard these coaches…sorry EDUCATORS.. say ONE negative thing towards anyone. Educators, coaches, directors…whatever the title may be…their job is to enforce the rules and grant discipline when deemed necessary. If they let these students go to this camp, where is the line drawn? What if everyone on the team came up with SOMETHING that was more “important” than being at practice…what kind of discipline would these educators/coaches be teaching their team?!?!?!?!? THIS IS CRAZY!!!! NO student has ever been publicly humiliated by these two CLASSY EDUCATORS…the investigator determined there was no reason for punishment toward these coaches….So, who is at fault? The children? The parents? The school district? The coaches? The investigator? At this point…it’s strictly based on opinion and hear-say. So, I say we let the people in charge of this case be the deciding factor….which they already have. And, I fully believe that these two CLASSY, RESPECTABLE MEN deserve to be completely reimbursed for the season that they were still technically coaches for…Coach Jewel is a great guy and should not suffer from this district’s mistakes… THIS IS A MESS!

Parents are hurting their children and hindering athletic programs by low expectations of their own children and acceptance of excuses and whining. To have a good program athletes need to sacrifice time. If they choose to only give the minimal, then they should expect to suceed minimally and play minimally. Are those same whiney parents okay with that? I am so tired of administrators listening to parents who are emotionally and logically blinded by their children’s feelings. I understand that they love their children, but they have to look beyond their own little worlds and prepare their children for the real world where their children will be held accountable. Did these coaches physically touch the players? Did they call them vulgar names? I don’t mean “lazy” I mean f*? If not, parents should stay out! Administration must learn to do what is right, not what is politically easiest. That district has embarrassed itself—parents and administration. Other schools shake their heads and laugh and the parents, athletes, and school board who let this happen. WOW!
