Dayton Fashion Week seeks models

UPDATE: The size and height restriction for the upcoming Dayton Fashion Week caused a stir. We chatted with organizers. Click here to find out why she says the restriction is legitimate.

Organizers of Dayton Fashion Week will hold a casting call for models 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 25 at De’Lish Cafe, 139 N. Main St., Dayton.

Models must arrive by 10 a.m. with one full body shot and one head shot. Measurements and contact information should be included on the back of each photo. Those with modeling experience should also bring portfolios.

Organizers seek female models who are least 5’8” without heels and wear a size 0-4. Male models should be least 5’10’’ and wear a suite size 40-44.

Participants must be at least 15 years old. Mature models are welcome.

A search for child models will be held 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 10 at De’Lish. A search for hosts to cover the fashion week for Inside Couture Television will be 10 to 1 p.m. April 7 at Sunwatch Indian Village, 2301 West River Road, Dayton. The show airs on a television station in Miami, Fla.

Dayton Fashion Week is scheduled for July 24 to 29. Organizers promise an event that gains “global exposure for Dayton’s emerging Fashion industry.”

Wow…do you think for once we could have a Fashion Week with normal sized people as models??? People of all sizes, perhaps? Way to go to discriminate again, Dayton!

This is absolutely disgusting!!!! But please don’t let it reflect on the City as a whole. Rather let if reflect on those individuals whom make up this disgusting organization. I wish I could sue people who use Dayton’s name to promote such discriminating events!!!!! I’m sure the individuals’ names are public knowlege…..

I like how they are holding the casting call at a cafe…I guess they won’t have to buy the models lunch, right??? I think that if thier purpose is to “gain global exposure for Dayton’s emerging Fashion industry”, maybe they should consider using a real representation of those who live in the Dayton area. The laid-off for the winter construction worker, the stay-at-home mom, the college student, the 100 hour a week business person. REAL HONEST HARD-WORKING PEOPLE. I’m not saying that models of a particular size and stature aren’t hardworking; it’s just that those sizes are not a fair representation of our area.

You all are correct in that this is not a fair representation of the Miami Valley’s residents. But you’re missing the fact that showing Miami, FL what Dayton’s citizens look like are not the designer’s point. They are designing clothes and anyone who knows anything about the fashion industry knows that those measurements are the standards for a runway model. So I am not sure why everyone is freaking out and has their panties in a bunch over some professionals in the industry doing their job. This point of the article was to relay information to those who qualify for the positions. And 5’8” is actually on the low end of height for a model, so they are actually being more open in their search. Oh, for the record, I am an adult in my twenties and wear a size 2-4… as far as I know I am a “real” person.

I am 19 im 5’9 and a size zero my whole family is a size 2 or below woman wise. So this is realistic and real woman do look and weight that. Just because you don’t doesnt mean you can judge us.

Good Morning everyone, I’m The Director of Operations for Dayton Fashion Week and I want to clear up some information regarding the casting calls. First of all this teaser about the casting call does not truly reflect what is taking place or what the criteria is to be a part of Dayton Fashion Week. Parts of this column were taken from my column at Dayton Most Metro and at the time of it’s posting we had not had any designers of “Plus-sized” clothing come on board. Yes we are using industry standards for high fashion runway production because we are bringing in high fashion designers and this is what they requested. However in that same column it was also pointed out that if you don’t fit into these size restrictions you still have 2 other opportunities to participate in DFW and that is in the form of being in the Cover Model Contest and trying out to be a host for Inside Couture Television neither of these have height are size restrictions. Check out all of the full columns on Dayton Most Metro for all of the details because soon after that we had several designers who design “plus-size” clothing to come on board and it was mentioned in my following column that models of all sizes are welcomed. We understand that no matter what we say or do that we won’t be able to please everyone so it’s not our goal to try and please everyone. But it is our goal to provide and educate on a new outlet for people in the Miami Valley who are interested in the Fashion Industry whether it comes in the form of modeling, makeup artistry, designers, photography, manufacturing, event production, and etc…modeling is only one aspect of the industry and the city of Dayton has a lot of talent and it is our goal to not only bring an International spotlight on Dayton but highlight local talent as well. We celebrate the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company and the Dayton Ballet and the dance industry is even more restrictive of size than the modeling industry. We support our favorite basketball teams but we don’t complain about the fact that you have to be at least 6’10 to be a center on the team, most of us tuned into the Super Bowl this past weekend and there wasn’t a linebacker under 200lbs on either team? Point being that there are criteria that needs to be met for any job and the modeling industry is no different. Yes, this is the mid-west and I’m from the mid-west, I was born and raised in Dayton and yes the mid-west has a very strong modeling industry with Chicago being the capital and the mid-west is growing in the fashion industry overall. We understand that this is a new concept to many in the area and the only thing that I ask is that you greet this event with an open mind. Thank you all for your time and concern.

well thanks for clearing up some misconceptions ms caressa, very nicely put. i am 40 years old black woman, born and raised in the mid-west as well and DO meet the requirements. i too am a real woman, with 2 real children, and a real career. I have never been on a diet in my life. i come from a family with the majority of the women being very plus-sized. we all embrace who we are and how we look. every opportunity isnt for every person. stop hatin and find your calling. if you arent skinny, runway modeling isnt for you boo. i have actually been trying to gain weight (imagine that) but i am goin to embrace my little size 3 body and hope i am chosen to flaunt it for everyone to see. YOU CAN LOVE IT OR HATE IT. GOD chose to create me this way and i love it.

By Skinny mom

February 8, 2012 2:58 PM | Link to this

I also meet the requirement! What is it with people being so discriminatory against tall, skinny women?! And why is it so difficult for me to find clothing that is long enough for my 36” inseam and size 4 waist?! I am a real woman… 32 years old, 3 kids, college educated and less concerned about my size because I’m more concerned about my family’s well being! And yes, I put on over 50 lbs with each child and lost it all each time without extensive dieting and workouts…it’s just genetic. Why does everyone assume that just because you’re skinny, you starve yourself? I know plenty of large women who diet and really try to lose weight but never do! Let’s stop being so judgemental and just embrace who God made us to be!

Its interesting that this is “Dayton Fashion” Week yet none of the three known fashion designers that reside in the are are involved. This event should at least reflect the local talent in the area. Lamour ,Atomik-Geisha and Althea Harper are all very well know within the National fashion industry,so why are they not involed in a show that will be hosted in their home town?

By Michelle

All the issues with so called real sized women is one of the reasons why I stopped producing fashion shows in Dayton. Not everyone can be a high fashion model. Im near sighted,so I cannot be a fighter pilot .

Null, FYI, Lamour has been contacted with a response. A response is not the same as participation. If they are actually participating they should be listed. Where is Atomik Geisha? You need all of the best local talent.

According to Dayton Fashion Weeks Facebook page they are still accepting applications for designers until March 1. I’m pretty sure once the deadline has passed and they have all of the applications they’ll announce who all is participating. If they want Atomik Geisha at their show then they will have her, Michelle who sounds like she’s a part of DFW said they already contacted Althea and Lamour. I know a couple of other local designers who have applied to be in this maybe they want to give some designers who haven’t been seen 1001 times in the city a chance too.

OK…I get it. Guys can be beefy and brawny at 5’10” and 40-44 size suit, but the ladies must be an anorexic 5’8”, size 0-4? Can you say double standard??? Apparently not.

By Debbie

February 11, 2012 11:36 AM | Link to this

Thom this isn’t a double standard. In January they announced the open call is welcome to models of all size. The Dayton Daily News in month late on this story. Read up on the subject first please!

Who is Lamour anyway and how do we know he’s talking about Dayton Fashion Week? Because if he were then this whole article is a waste because Dayton Fashion Week is having a casting call for models! New York Fashion Week is going on right now and designers pay $50,000 to be in that show, the smaller shows around New York Fashion Week charge $5,000, There’s a cost to be in Detroit Fashion Week, Fashion in Detroit, Mid-West Fashion Week, Miami Fashion Week, LA Fashion Week, and etc…does he know how the industry really works?

Lamour is the best known designer in Dayton. He was the feature designer for Ebony Fashion fair for about ten years. Atomik-Geisha is his number one rival having been featured during New York fashion week and numerous music videos. We know hes talking about Dayton fashion week because you guys said that you contacted him and he responded. I guess thats his response.

I used to work with Ebony Fashion Fairs tour believe me if he was in it he had a fee to pay. I just googled both of them and yawn, if they were all of that why are they still struggling with their lines. You’d think by now they be doing Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, instead of one of the side shows. I’m pretty sure that the show will go on without them. There are plenty of emerging designers in the Dayton area who are all too eager to take their place.

Atomik Geisha has d ebony Fashion fair paid Lamour, been there and Ebony Fashion fair paid Lamour not vice versa. Nobody in their right mind is going to pay $400 for a fashion show in a third tier fashion market like the one that exist in Dayton there are no fashion buyers for large store chains here and very little major media for publicity here save the Dayton Daily news. And if your coordinator is such a big model where are here tear sheets? Click comp card? etc Artist please dont get played.

I’m friends with the coordinator for Dayton Fashion Week and I know that Hasan the designer of Atomik Geisha has used her to model for several of his local shows and asked her to pay $4000 to walk in his show in New York. I’ve also seen the recent exchange that Hasan had with her at a First Friday Event at Basho and he was mad because Dayton Fashion Week was trademarked. I know that she has had to block him from contacting her on some modeling website and on Facebook and because he constantly harrassed her and each time she blocked him he’d stalk her from a friends page. She’s never claimed to be a big model and has never spoken highly of her time as a model but she has plenty of pictures of her work and documents to prove it.

Dayton Ohio is a third tier fashion market at best. So spending $400 in order to participate in Dayton Fashion Week is not in the best interest of Dayton designers. It amounts to the exploitation of the dreams of struggling artist..

You should not put such inflamatory statements online. It hurts your credibility and also opens you up for potential legal action. People have the right to argue with you. If there was no threat of violence or in your face bad language. Then there there is no case of stalking. You have made potentially libelous statements. Be careful.

It sounds to me that there are some hurt feelings here this conversation has been going on for a week from the supporters of the 2 self-proclaimed top designers in Dayton. Meanwhile Dayton Fashion Week has the support of community leaders, they are helping out in the community, local celebs are on board, local media is backing them they were just on FOX 45 In The Morning, they are bringing in international models and designers, national media. They are getting tons of submissions from local designers who see the exposure that being in this show could bring to their work. They have over 4,000 Twitter followers, and according to their Facebook fan page several of their team members have just been published. People only hate on the successful so they must be doing something right. Get over it folks and show some support.

How many times does she have to block a person from contacting her before it’s considered harassment and stalking? And it’s only libel if its false, I’ve read the entire exhange, I’m an attorney and I will represent her. If you’re so great do your own show and leave them alone.

We all love Hasan baby. It is YOU that is the outsider with questionable intentions not Hasan. There would not even be a fashion industry in Dayton if not for people like him. Stalking is a representative pattern of behavior. Not a few email messages and a conversation in some shop. Go back to D.C. with that nonsense.

I run Basho Apparel and I saw this post. I was at my store the entire night and I personally did not see anyone have any kind of confrontation here. We had a wonderful opening and I regret to hear any of these rumours, especially about our shop. We are excited to see the Fashion Week and hope it is a great staple annually in Dayton. We pride ourselves in moving fashion forward and hope to moving forward with all of you.
