Local giant claw makes Guinness World Records book

The giant claw conceived during an end of the day brainstorming session continues to draw attention to a Dayton creative firm.

Dayton’s Real Art Design Group’s Santa Claw is mentioned in the 2012 Guinness World Records Gamer’s Edition as the Largest Claw Machine.

The Santa Claw is mentioned in the 2012 Guinness World Records Gamer’s Edition as the Largest Claw Machine (Ever).

Patrice Hall, Real Art’s social media marketing director, said her company applied for inclusion in Guinness when the claw was being constructed at the end of 2010.

“That is how they knew about us,” she said.

The Santa Claw is 17 feet by 8 feet by 12 feet. It gives users a shot at grabbing toys and other prizes by using their computer’s mouse or keyboard.

It was part of gadget blog Gizmodo.com’s Gizmodo Gallery in the Big Apple in December and will be discussed at the South by Southwest Interactive Conference this March.

Lead by Creative Director Chris Wire, Real Art’s 50 employees planned, designed, constructed and maintained the steel structure, springloaded claw and a website for users.

Thinking outside of the box lead to the concept, Hall said.

“What Chris likes to say is that a bunch of us were sitting around with beers at the end of the day,” she said.
