Here’s the Deal: Save some green on holiday prep

For those of you shopping in preparation for your Thanksgiving holiday or those who want to get a little jump on decorating for Christmas, there are some great deals at area stores this week in kitchenware, decorations and on artificial Christmas trees.

Kitchenware

If you want to update your dinnerware or flatware before you host holiday guests, this is the time.

JCPenney is offering 60 percent off select flatware and dinnerware, and has a 42-piece flatware set for $29.99 (marked down from $79.99) and a 16-piece hand-painted dinnerware set for $39.99 (regularly $99.99).

At Target, there is a 12-piece, gold-rimmed, holiday tableware set for $10, and a T-fal aluminum roaster that holds a 20- to 25-pound turkey for $24.99.

Target also had a 3-in-1, multi-use, 30-quart turkey fryer for $49.

Target had the best deal on a hot kitchen item this year — the triple buffet warming tray. The original price on the party piece is $59.99, and it is just $27 at Target. The same item is $29.99 at JCPenney and $39.99 at Kohl’s.

Some of the better deals at Kohl’s are on the store’s entire stock of holiday dinnerware, which is 40 percent to 50 percent off.

Also at Kohl’s, all Food Network dinnerware accessories are 30 percent off and all kitchen electronics are 10 percent to 50 percent off.

Of note as well is that today, Nov. 15, is the last day of the current sale for Kohl’s card-holders to get extra discounts and for everyone to get $10 Kohl’s Cash for every $50 spent.

Kohl’s and Meijer also have Keurig single-cup brewing systems on sale for as low as $129.99.

Meijer also has a deal right now that gets you a $10 store gift card when you buy any coffeemaker that costs $99.99 or more.

Also at Meijer, shoppers can get a 72-piece dinnerware set, with service for 12, for $59.99.

Sears has all Cuisinart kitchen appliances and Kenmore cookware on sale this week, with savings of $5 to $40 on each item.

Kmart has 50 percent off Essential Home 20-piece banded dinnerware, marking it down to $19.99, and a 10-piece turkey roaster set for a crazy-low $4.99 after rebate. The roaster set is originally $24.99.

And, speaking of crazy-low prices, Walmart shoppers can get a four-pack set of embossed stoneware, with dinner plates, salad plates, bowls or mugs for $5.

And, at Christmas Tree Shops, there are many festive holiday sets to choose from, including a set of three holiday bowls is $3.99. Also, the store’s Pfaltzgraff dinnerware is 60 percent off.

Artificial trees

One of best aspects of getting an artificial Christmas tree is that it can be a huge savings in the long-term, because you don’t have to worry about buying a tree for years to come. But, with some stores’ prices this year on artificial trees, you can save money this year as well.

Rite Aid has 4-foot to 6-foot prelit trees from $19.99 to $39.99, and Christmas Tree Shops has 6-foot prelit trees for $39.99.

Walmart has a 7-foot prelit tree for $88 and Michaels has a 7-foot prelit tree for $129.99, which is $100 off its original price.

But Kmart bests that with its prelit 7-footer for $99.99.

Also Kmart is having one-day specials on various holiday items. Today at Kmart, there is 50 percent off “Trim A Home” items, which includes a 6-foot prelit tree for $49.99.

On Thursday, Kmart has all prelit trees for 50 percent off.

You also can get trees that are prelit with LED lights, making them more energy-efficient. The LED trees will be a little more expensive at the outset but, due to the lights lasting 10 times as long as the traditional, the trees will save you money in the long run.

Shoppers can get a 6-foot LED prelit tree at Walmart for $98, which is better than the deal at Sears.

Sears has its 6-foot LED trees for $159.99.

Decorations

The crafty shops are on top of holiday decorating deals this year, with Jo-Ann Fabric and Crafts offering 50 percent off all Holiday Inspirations decor, and Hancock Fabrics and Michaels marking down Christmas accents 40 percent.

Also at Michaels, clear glass ornaments, holiday ribbon and wreaths are 50 percent off. At Christmas Tree Shops, there are beaded wreaths for $1.99 to $4.99 and decorative wooden wall sleighs for $2.99.

Rite Aid also had some surprisingly good decorating deals this week, with 50 percent off tabletop and wall decor, and the same discount on lighted holiday houses. The drugstore also has 50 percent off holiday food and tableware gift sets.

Kmart is in the 50 percent spirit as well, thusly marking down its harvest kitchen tabletop items and decorative baskets this week. Kmart also has 25 percent off much of its Martha Stewart collection of holiday wreaths, ornaments and miscellaneous decor.

At Walmart, glitter ornaments are $1 each.
