Another lady goes home on “American Idol”
Simon was right. Tim Urban really does seem untouchable.
Despite making the bottom three for a second week and having an atrocious performance once again, this contestant (who wasn’t even in the original Top 24 mind you) is safe for another week.
During Tuesday’s judges’ commentary, judge Simon Cowell basically said it didn’t matter what he thought of Tim’s performance because Tim would just smile and be back another week.
So that meant so long Didi Benami.
Despite a valiant effort for the save with a repeat performance of Fleetwood Mac’s “Rhiannon”, the judges opted not to use the one save of the season on Didi.
All I want to know is why do the ladies keep going home week after week?
Katie Stevens was the other contestant in the bottom three, also for a second week in a row after a decent performance. But she was the first of the three sent to safety again.
Siobhan Magnus was really lucky her fans saved her because this week she was one of the worst during Tuesday’s live show. She flopped not only for song choice (“Through the Fire” by Chaka Khan) but because she was really off key. To her credit, Siobhan handled her struggles gracefully and seemed very gracious that she will get another chance. Besides, Siobhan has had some real standout moments this season, so she has gained a loyal following.
What did you think of the outcome?
Time for a rant
Remember when results shows used to be a half-hour? Between the “Clash of the Titans” plugs and the dull in-show Ford commercials, Justin Bieber in the audience and the endless commentary from Ryan Seacrest and the judges, this show just dragged on and on and on.
The performances from Usher (singing new single “OMG” with the Black Eyed Peas’ will.i.am), Diddy Dirty Money (not a name change this time, but the addition of new group I guess) and Season 2 winner Ruben Studdard were the only semi-tolerable parts (I said semi-tolerable) of the show. I wish the judges would critique the guest performers each week. I wonder what Simon really thought about Usher and Diddy’s grand productions.
I did sort of enjoy when Big Mike Lynche grabbed Seacrest in a bear hug and lifted him off the floor in retaliation for the brief moment he believed he was in the bottom three. Even better: Big Mike wore a fake rat tail and gave Ruben Studdard workout tips. Life just doesn’t get any better …
Did you hear?
Hey “American Idol” die-hards, did you catch that Ruben Studdard and Clay Aiken are going on a short tour together this summer so you can relive those glorious Season 2 memories. I don’t know about that one. I hear Clay can be a little creepy on stage…
TweetWhich celeb was the 1st to go on ‘Dancing with the Stars?’
Hillary is feeling under the weather so our Dancing with the Stars elimination report comes from the Associated Press:
LOS ANGELES — After two weeks on “Dancing With the Stars,” Shannen Doherty is leaving the ballroom.
The actress was the first celebrity eliminated from the new season of the hit ABC show. She and professional partner Mark Ballas were axed during Tuesday’s episode.
“Dancing isn’t really my thing,” she said after learning her fate. “I did it for my dad.”
The 38-year-old “Charmed” and “90210” star said on last week’s season premiere that she joined the “Dancing” cast to honor her father, a big fan of the show who recently suffered a stroke. He sat in the audience, watching his daughter perform.
“To see my dad’s face light up the way that it did and how proud he was of me just filled me with this kind of amazing emotion of thankfulness,” Doherty said Tuesday. “I call that a success.”
She said her elimination may have been fate, as Ballas hurt his knee during rehearsals and was using a crutch during Tuesday’s episode.
“I pulled the muscle off the bone so I’ll be out for six weeks,” he said.
The judges seemed to appreciate the couple’s two dances, calling their jive “energetic” and their Viennese waltz “ambitious.” But fans failed to keep them afloat. Judges’ scores are combined with viewer votes to determine which celebrity is eliminated each week.
Viewer votes saved the lowest-scoring contestant, astronaut Buzz Aldrin, who earned 14 points out of 30 for his cha-cha last week and 12 points for his foxtrot on Monday’s episode.
Besides Aldrin, remaining competitors include Olympic figure skater Evan Lysacek, actors Niecy Nash, Pamela Anderson and Aiden Turner, reality stars Jake Pavelka and Kate Gosselin, singer Nicole Scherzinger, sportscaster Erin Andrews and football star Chad Ochocinco.
What do you think? Did America get it right or wrong?
TweetTop contenders on ‘American Idol’ becoming ‘crystal’ clear
It’s crystal clear who’s in it to win it pun intended, of course.
As usual, Crystal Bowersox was amazing. But I think it’s still up for grabs who joins Crystal near the top. Big Mike has been consistently strong, but Lee DeWyze had a standout performance tonight that even rivaled Crystal’s and if he can stay confident and true to himself, he could be one to watch.
Tonight’s show, which featured soul and R&B tunes and Usher as mentor, was full of disappointments and mediocre moments, but had a few shining moments with Lee, Crystal and Big Mike.
Who will go home this week? I’m not so sure after tonight’s performances. Siobhan Magnus, Tim Urban and Didi Benami flopped this week.
But it seems Tim Urban is untouchable — which means it could be the end of the road for another female contestant. Siobhan has had some really high points this season, so she may end up OK. That means it could be the end of the road for Didi Benami after two back-to-back poor showings.
If Siobhan’s in danger, I bet the judges really consider using their one save on her.
Tonight’s rundown:
Siobhan Magnus
Song choice: “Through the Fire” by Chaka Khan
Judges comments: Randy said it wasn’t one of Siobhan’s shining moments, but loved her conviction to take on such a daring song. Ellen agreed and said despite some rough moments it was still “dessert before the meal.” Kara said she sensed Siobhan was nervous, but that her performance was off. Kara did say, though, that at the end of the day she’s still a great singer. Simon said it sounded like Siobhan was singing while running out of breath and said it was by far her weakest performance, not a good song choice and that he’s getting tired of the screaming at the end of songs — which is quickly becoming her gimmick.
Overall impression: Siobhan fell down a few notches this week. After a few really memorable performances, this was really disappointing (I even cringed several times) and this song showcased that she may not be the contender many people thought she was. There were some highs in that performance, but the missed notes were really telling of her overall ability. This wasn’t just wrong song choice. Some of the notes were just awful.
Grade: C-
Casey James
Song choice: “Hold On I’m Coming” by Sam & Dave with guitar
Judges comments: Randy said it was a perfection choice and a great performance, staying true to himself. Ellen said it felt generic, and was perhaps too safe. Kara said she thinks he has more range and that his song choices aren’t showing what he can do and would like to see more acoustic guitar. Simon said this week was his strongest performance so far and showed a different side and sounded authentic and that he was really impressed with Casey this week.
Overall impression: Great song choice and infusion of soul with rock, which is Casey’s niche. The performance was fun with a lot of energy and was refreshing after Siobhan’s disappointing showing.
Grade: B
Big Mike Lynche
Song choice: “Ready for Love” by India Arie with guitar
Judges comments: Randy said he loved the guitar and the tender ballad and really showed his sensitive side. Ellen said that was beautiful. Kara said he did an incredible job with the song and mastered the true emotion of the song and was one of her favorite performances. Simon said this is probably the first time that he could take Mike seriously as an artist. Even though the song choice was a bit gloomy, he demonstrated the difference between originality and karaoke. He said he really believed that performance.
Overall impression: I thought it was one of Big Mike’s best performances to date. I thought that was a great song choice and wasn’t an obvious song choice for this category. It was very heartfelt, captivating and showcased strong vocal skills. Still sticking by my Top 2 prediction for Big Mike. We’ll see if it holds true.
Grade: A-
Didi Benami
Song choice: “What Becomes of the Broken Hearted” by Jimmy Ruffin
Judges comments: Randy said the whole performance flatlined and just wasn’t great. He was waiting for a moment and never heard one. Ellen said, despite being a big fan of Didi’s voice, that it was a way dramatic performance. Kara said it was overdone and that she’s so confused because Didi has lost who she is (a singer-songwriter) and her past few performances have left her puzzled. Simon said it was like “swimming in jelly” and over the top, old fashioned and off melody. He continued to say that’s a great song that has some high moments, but that version did not and that Didi has “completely and utterly” lost her way.
Overall impression: That was a snoozer. It wasn’t horrible, but it was just drab. My husband also informs me that Didi missed several words in this song (it’s one of his favorite songs of all time and his memory is amazing, so I trust he knows what he’s talking about).
Grade: C
“Teflon” Tim Urban
Song choice: “Sweet Love” by Anita Baker
Judges comments: Randy said there were pluses and minuses and first sounded really pedestrian, but he sang in tune. There was no connection. Ellen said that was a tough song to sing and he was walking like he was sneaking into a bedroom. Kara said he was Broadway at times, Vegas at times and that he took the soul out of the song. Simon said it doesn’t make any difference whatsoever what we say. It was a completely inappropriate song but it doesn’t matter because the audience will vote for you so “well done.”
Overall impression: What a weird song choice for Tim. It was so loungy and sort of like elevator music. Tim really belong on a tween show like one of those boy band comedies you find on Disney or Nick. The staring into the camera without blinking was creeping me out, too. Simon’s assessment was dead on and was the highlight of my day. Puh-lease send him home.
Grade: D+
Andrew Garcia
Song choice: Chris Brown’s “Forever”
Judges comments: Randy said this was his best performance in a long time and he turned a dance song into his own. Ellen said it was such a strong performance and that he was smiling again. Kara said that was a giant leap in the right direction. Simon said it was miles better than what we’ve heard over the past couple weeks. The only problem said as a person he comes across as boring and that he needs to start showing some personality because I know nothing about you as a person and that personality is as important.
Overall impression: Yeah! Andrew, finally got it right. He rebounded from some really mediocre and even poor performances. This was genuine and gave us a feel again for what Andrew would be like as a recording artist. He seemed more relaxed and more comfortable on stage. As for Simon’s comments on personality? Kris Allen managed to pull it off last year, and he was just as reserved.
Grade: B
Katie Stevens
Song choice: “Chain of Fools” by Aretha Franklin
Judges comments: Randy said the performance was a little disconnected, but vocally was one of the best of the night. “You’re like a young Christina in a weird sort of way.” Ellen said she has a Snookie poof and a great voice. She wished the song were more current and that she always sounds so mature. Kara said this is one of your best vocal performances, but I agree you have to make it young and commercial. Simon said the Christina comparison was crazy and that he thought it was pretty good, but that she came across as robotic and cold and that it was very “Star Search.” Simon once again disagreed with Kara’s assessment that Katie belongs in the R&B genre. Randy said she’s pop with a R&B slant.
Overall impression: It wasn’t bad at all, but she’s no Aretha. She really set up the judges to deliver all of their classic critiques. And I’m surprised they were as kind as they were. But then again, compared to Tim, Didi and Siobhan’s train wrecks, Katie was phenomenal.
Grade: B
Lee DeWyze
Song choice: “Treat Her Like a Lady” by the Cornelius Brothers
Judges comments: Randy said that was unbelievable and his best in weeks. Ellen said “now the night’s started” and the best performance of the night. Kara said it could have been on his record and was amazing. Simon said he’s always believed in Lee and had some frustrations because Lee didn’t believe in himself. Simon encouraged Lee to watch tonight’s performance and it could have been the night that changes his life forever.
Overall impression: Competition’s on! Lee blew just about everyone out of the water tonight. He has such a powerful voice and finally showed some real energy and confidence. The judges have been saying for weeks that Lee needed to have a moment, and he definitely had his tonight.
Grade: A
Crystal Bowersox
Song choice: “Midnight Train to Georgia” by Gladys Night
Judges comments: Randy said Gladys would have been proud and it was another great performance. Ellen said she’s always great and she showed another side and that she’s in it to win it. Kara said she is so glad she took that risk and that she’s excited for what she can do next week. Simon said the choice of song was incredible and that she needs to stick with her identity and that she seemed uncomfortable with the piano. He urged Crystal to stay true to herself because she’s authentic and one of those rare contestants who really knows who she is.
Overall impression: Crystal is just excellent. She did seem a little nervous without the guitar and with the piano, but she managed to deliver a powerful vocal and powerful overall performance. She is the one to beat for sure.
Grade: A
Aaron Kelly
Song choice: “Ain’t No Sunshine” by Bill Withers
Judges comments: Randy said it was an all right performance. Ellen said it was a good song choice and good performance. Kara said she liked it but he could have done more with it. Simon said compared to some of the other performances of the night like Lee’s, which were the main course, that was like a “cupcake.” I love Simon’s commentary.
Overall impression: Decent performance, but overall it lacked the “wow” factor we saw with Crystal and Lee. But Aaron is consistently good. He should have no worries.
Grade: B
Who was better tonight — Lee or Crystal?
Who was worse — Tim, Didi or Siobhan?
TweetThe ladies stand out early on ‘Dancing’
Okay, so I missed last week’s kickoff. Good thing all 11 stars danced again this week.
You got Hillary’s first impressions last week. Now mine. Did your opinion of anyone change after their second dance?
The Fox Trots: Aiden Turner and partner Edyta Sliwinska were pleasant? Aiden was good, but I keep forgetting about him. I think he will probably be voted out early.
Niecy Nash and partner Louis van Amstel are already my absolute favorites! Niecy is so fun and adorable, but she did a great job of pulling off a sophisticated Fox Trot. My only beef — why did they have to put her in such a hideous dress? It looked like something out of Ms. Piggy’s wardrobe. My girl Niecy doesn’t deserve that! She looked really cute in her practice clothes. Let her wear those.
Yes Buzz Aldrin is sweet. Yes, he’s an American icon and a hero to many. But no, he is not a good dancer. Great to see him trying new things and giving it his all, but he won’t be on the show long.
Erin Andrews and partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy were another favorite of mine. I believe the fellas would agree she’s, how do you say, crazy hot? I loved how she was able to belch and do the splits in the same episode. I thought her Fox Trot looked the most polished and professional.
Pamela Anderson and Damian Whitewood. I don’t have much to say except, Wow! Pamela looked incredible and I doubt anyone in the audience took their eyes off her the entire dance. Does anyone else get the sense that they are gunning for male viewers this season?
I admittedly have a soft spot for OchoCinco, but bias aside I did not think Chad OchoCinco and partner Cheryl Burke’s Fox Trot was that bad. Luckily I think his personality will pull him through to another week. He and Cheryl are so cute in their backstage interaction. I really hope she can teach his butt to dance.
The Jive-ers: Shannen Doherty and Mark Ballas — less emotional than last week and much more fun!
I don’t know what my problem is, but I just didn’t like Evan Lysacek and Anna Trebunskaya’s Jive. They only get my vote this week because they stopped by Evan’s childhood home in the Chicago suburbs near my own hometown.
Bachelor Jake Pavelka and partner Chelsie Hightower’s routine seemed extremely frantic. He can’t seem to decide if he is attacking that poor blonde girl or staring at her chest. Isn’t his new fiancĂ© in the audience?
Wow! Two 10s for Nicole Scherzinger and her partner Derek Hough. Especially after it seemed like the producers gave them the fastest song EVER to Jive to. Not sure it deserved that high of a score, but it was definitely good.
Having watched Kate’s show, I have to say that Kate Gosselin is being pretty tame towards her partner Tony Dovolani. You’re supposed to be the teacher Tony, man up and tell her to shut up and dance. Not that it’s going to help her absolutely dismal dance ability. On the plus side, momma’s legs look fierce!
Predictions: The ladies are going to take the top spots: Nicole, Erin, Niecy and Pam are here to stay for a while.
Either Buzz, Kate or Aiden are going home.
Who’s your first week pick to go home?
TweetDid your favorite make the “Idol” summer tour?
The Top 10 “American Idol” finalists will be part of the next “Idols Live” summer tour.
They are: Siobhan Magnus, Lee Dewyse, Casey James, Aaron Kelly, Didi Benami, Michael Lynche, Crystal Bowersox, Andrew Garcia, Katie Stevens and Tim Urban.
Paige Miles, who judge Simon Cowell said more than once had the best voice of the female contestants, will not be joining them after the results of this week’s nationwide vote were revealed. Paige had struggled with song choice since Hollywood Week, suffered from laryngitis and just generally was unable to showcase what kind of artist she’d be.
The bottom three also included the very lucky Tim Urban (who managed to not even be part of the original Top 24 and has made it far enough to go on tour) and Katie Stevens, although Katie didn’t get a chance to sit down on the last of the three stools before host Ryan Seacrest sent her back to safety.
Only four ladies remain in the competition. Let’s see if Simon’s early prediction of a female winner still holds true. My money’s on Crystal Bowersox, but every season has its share of surprises. Let’s not forget Adam Lambert was the favorite all last season and ended up coming in second.
The rest of Thursday’s results show was basically a Disney Channel reunion and teen/tween dream, with performances by Miley Cyrus (this week’s mentor to the contestants), Joe Jonas and Demi Lovato.
At least it kept the younger “Idol” fans entertained.
What did you think of tonight’s results?
TweetWho wasn’t good enough to make “Idols Live” tour?
The stakes were high tonight on “American Idol.”
As judge Simon Cowell mentioned at the start of the show, this is actually the worst week to perform poorly because whomever doesn’t do well enough tonight to get America’s vote will miss out on the opportunity to go on the Idol tour featuring the top 10 finalists, which could lead to big money and open other doors.
Who should go home based on tonight’s performances? Tim Urban. I know I sound like a broken record every week, but he’s awful and the judges’ comparisons to “High School Musical” were so fitting. Watching him sing tonight was like watching someone trying to be a little bit Jonas Brothers and a little bit Zac Efron, from the look to the dance moves. But even “High School Musical” was more enjoyable. I should know. I have a daughter and I get the pleasure of watching “HSM” over and over again.
But, my guess is Tim will get enough fan votes to make it on the tour, which means that Paige Miles should be going home after tonight’s performance unless there is a surprise twist this week. If Paige gets some votes regardless (doubt it considering she was in the bottom two last week), then Andrew Garcia and Didi Benami could be in trouble.
Tonight’s theme was No. 1 Billboard Hot 100 hits, but more contestants struggled with song choice tonight than got it right. Those who did get it right really stood out from the rest of the mediocre and the plain terrible performances.
No surprise, Ohioan Crystal Bowersox was the standout by a mile. Here’s a look at how everyone else fared.
Lee Dewyse
Song: “The Letter” by The Box Tops
Judges comments: Randy said that this was a surprising song choice, but Lee knocked it out of the park. Ellen said it was a fantastic performance (and had some favorite pen metaphor that was weird). Kara said Lee raised the bar for himself and that he finally owned the stage and showed control over his vocals. Simon said he was surprised that of all Hot 100 songs that Lee chose this one and that it wasn’t a recording performance but rather it was corny. He said that performance didn’t define Lee as a contemporary recording artist.
Overall impression: This isn’t really Lee’s style, but I think he showcased he can be diverse. Most importantly, he needed to do something a little different to build his confidence on stage, and I think he did that. But next week, he should return to his genre, but choose songs that will show a little more vocal range.
Score: B
Paige Miles
Song: “Against All Odds” by Phil Collins
Judges comments: Randy said “that was honestly terrible.” It was so bad, Ellen couldn’t comment. Kara said that it was her worst vocal and possibly the worst of the season. She also said she thought Paige had given up. Simon said it was like five different people were singing the song and that it got progressively worse. Simon said it’s a shame because she was so good.
Overall impression: Yikes. “Against All Odds” is a beautiful song, but not this version. Paige has been so inconsistent all season. She’s struggled with song choice and identity and despite showing some vocal power last week, this could very well be the end of the road for Paige.
Score: D
Tim Urban
Song: “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” by Queen
Judges comments: Randy said the whole point of this competition is to show off vocals and that this was bad karaoke. Ellen said Tim obviously has a lot of fans, but that it felt like an audition for “High School Musical” and that it was corny. Kara said that performance was Zac Efron in “Hairspray” and little girls will love it, but Tim acted like he already made it but has a lot of work to do. Simon said the sliding wasn’t a problem and that it distracted from the song and that’s why he did it. The problem was it was utterly pointless and silly and that he has zero chance of winning. Two weeks of silly song choices.
Overall impression: Please send this guy home. He is nowhere in the league of his peers in this competition. He was acting like he was a Jonas brother or something and he’s just not. The slide across the stage was really tacky, by the way.
Score: D-
Aaron Kelly
Song: “Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing” by Aerosmith
Judges comments: Randy said it wasn’t a perfect performance but gave a “thank God” after sitting through the two previous performances. Ellen thought it was a great song choice, and despite being sick, Aaron had strong vocals. Kara said that was the best song choice of the night so far and week to week Aaron knows how to pick songs that show off his vocal range. Simon said the only criticism is that he sounds old-fashioned for his age but that there is zero chance he’s going home.
Overall impression: This song has a special place in my heart (my wedding first dance), and Aaron did it justice despite having laryngitis.
Score: B
Crystal Bowersox
Song: “Me and Bobby McGee” by Janis Joplin
Judges comments: Randy said that is what’s called being a star. “This is what it’s about.” Ellen said Crystal has an amazing voice and is consistently great and that she just wants to see a little more connection with the audience. Kara said she felt a little more connection from Crystal this week. Simon said up until now it’s been karaoke and that Crystal’s version of that song is as good as Pink’s. “You’re doing your own thing. You took a song and nailed it.”
Overall impression: Crystal is in a league of her own and seems like a true star to me already. Right now, there are so few who even come close.
Score: A
Michael Lynche
Song: “When A Man Loves A Woman”
Judges comments: Randy said it wasn’t his best vocal, but he knows he’s an R&B soul artist and he delivers consistently. Ellen said it was a safe choice and that “this woman loves that man.” Kara said technically it was great but a bit boring and loungy at times and a little overindulgent. Simon said it was almost too much, especially with all the instruments on stage, and that it wasn’t very relevant to today.
Overall impression: Crystal was going to be a tough act for anyone to follow, but Big Mike held his own. He had a great voice and he is very captivating on stage. Not his best performance in this competition, but certainly one of the best tonight.
Score: B+
Andrew Garcia
Song: “Heard it through the Grapevine” by Marvin Gaye
Judges comments: Randy said it wasn’t good and the wrong song choice. Ellen said that wasn’t enough to get people on board and not a good song choice. Kara said Andrew’s chasing the “moment” in reference to his standout Hollywood week performance and is now really confused. Simon said that maybe the judges overrated the “Straight Up” song and that he’s had enough time to get it right. He said Andrew sucked the soul out of that song and ruined one of the great pop songs of all time and at the same time made himself really corny. Simon said the real problem is he doesn’t know who he is as an artist.
Overall impression: I think guest mentor Miley Cyrus gave Andrew some bad advice on putting down the guitar because the dancing was so bad and corny. But bad dance moves aside, the bigger problem is that Andrew is having an identity crisis in this competition. He always tries to have fun and bring energy, but he is week after week picking songs that just don’t work with his vocal style. He wasn’t the worst tonight, but he wasn’t good either. He could be in trouble.
Score: C-
Katie Stevens
Song: “Big Girls Don’t Cry” by Fergie
Judges comments: Randy said it wasn’t her best and despite some pitchy moments, he was happy that she picked a younger song and outfit. Ellen thought it was Katie’s performance so far and that she’s the “Dakota Fanning of American Idol,” whatever that means. Kara said pop/RB is the place for Katie. Simon said you meeting Miley Cyrus was the best thing to happen to you and the way you look tonight compared to the “pageant horror” was a big improvement. But he said Katie still is competing in a hard field and that she could have more success in the country genre with a more loyal fan base.
Overall impression: Katie has come a long way and has taken a big step in the right direction tonight. Great song choice and solid delivery (she did miss some notes and had some pitch problems in a few verses). She definitely gets points for most improved this week.
Score: B-
Casey James
Song: “Power of Love” by Casey James
Judges comments: Randy said he wasn’t a fan of the song choice, but that Casey did it well. Ellen said it was the best vocal of the night. Kara said with the right songs he’s ready to make an album and that he’s in a zone. Simon said that song was old-fashioned 25 years ago, much less now, and it was like watching and listening to an 80s cover band.
Overall impression: I thought the song choice was a bit odd. It was an OK performance, but certainly not very memorable and it lacked any “moments.” I’m leaning more toward Simon on this one. It was an odd choice, but Casey made it fun, especially with the guitar.
Score: C+
Didi Benami
Song: “You’re No Good” by Linda Rondstadt
Judges comments: Randy said he loved the idea of it but that she never hit the pitch quite right. Ellen said it wasn’t the right song choice for her. Kara said she felt like Didi was playing a character and it didn’t feel like Didi at all, and the performance left her confused. Simon said there was an irony with her screeching out “You’re no good.” “It was like a bad part of a musical and that she was trying to play a part,” he said.
Overall impression: The risk didn’t pay off, but she certainly wasn’t the worst tonight. Didi has enough strong performances from week’s past to keep her in the competition a little while longer.
Score: C
Siobhan Magnus
Song: “Superstition” by Stevie Wonder
Judges comments: Randy said Siobhan is so fearless and that the performance was great. Kara said it wasn’t her best performance but still amazing. Simon said there will be a split — some people will love it and others won’t.
Overall impression: Siobhan is so strange, from her style to her interviews. But I kind of like her for it. I love that Siobhan hits the screamy note at the end, but it was a little off key this week. Still, one of the most memorable of the evening.
Score: B+
What did you think of tonight’s performances? Who doesn’t deserve to be on the “American Idol” tour based on tonight’s performances and overall?
Tweet‘Dancing with the Stars’ season 10 kicks off
Tonight, we kick off the 10th season of ABC’s ‘Dancing With the Stars.’ This time around we have 11 contestants ranging from an astronaut, a bachelor (well, former bachelor anyway), several actresses and a football star known for a different kind of dancing (the kind at the end zone). Starting things off…
Cincinnati Bengals player Chad Ochocinco & Cheryl Burke’s Cha-Cha-Cha was decent. I’ll give them most likely to improve.
Shannen Doherty & Mark Ballas looked lovely during their Viennese Waltz. They had the most emotional performance of the night with the tears from Shannen and her father.
I don’t like this new room for the “backstage.” They’ve replaced the red room with a glass “aquarium” off the dance floor. But all the audience gets to see are the backsides of the stars while we’re waiting. Someone didn’t think this through.
Erin Andrews & Maksim Chmerkovskiy definitely had the worst song choice of the night with Ke$ha’s “Tik Tok.” Why this dumb song? They had to change at least half of the lyrics! The dance was pretty good though. Her tassels make shakin’ it easy.
The corniest dance of the night had to be Jake Pavelka & Chelsie Hightower — The “Bachelor” is dancing to Seal’s “Kiss From a Rose.”
Based on crowd reaction, Niecy Nash & Louis van Amstel might be the fan favorites this season. After she had a blast dancing and dedicated her performance to “thick girls everywhere” she might be my favorite too!
I’m never surprised when the Olympics stars are good. Evan Lysacek & Anna Trebunskaya were no exception. They might have nailed down most graceful, or maybe most potential to do well.
The funniest line of the night comes from Buzz Aldrin about his partner Ashly Costa, “When I first met Ashly I thought ‘this is a really cute babe!’”
The best judge comment came from Carrie Ann to Buzz when she called him a “cute little moonwalker.” It’s just a shame his dancing wasn’t that great.
The best of our Ohio connections: Definitely goes to Nicole Scherzinger, who attended Wright State University at one time, & her partner Derek Hough.
Soap star Aiden Turner and partner Edyta Sliwinska had the most steamy dance.
Most drama before we even get going? Kate Gosselin of course with her attitude during rehearsals towards partner Tony Dovolani. No surprise there. Her whole life is dramatic.
The most stripper-esque (but still pretty good) number would be none other than Pamela Anderson & Damian Whitewood (new pro this season). Even Bruno seems to agree. “Stripperella’s back home,” he declared.
Well that wraps up night 1 of season 10.
My pick for worst is a tie between Kate and Buzz
The best of the night? Nicole Sherzinger. I think she will go far and maybe even win this season if she keeps up like she did tonight.
No results this week and night 2 will be next Monday night at 8 p.m.
Who were your favorites? Least favorites?
TweetAn “American Idol” injustice?
Oh, “American Idol” voters, why, oh why didn’t you send Tim Urban home?
I had such high hopes that justice would be served tonight when we learned the bottom three included Urban, Paige Miles and Lacey Brown.
But in the end, it was Lacey Brown who didn’t make the cut this week. Granted Lacey certainly wasn’t going to make it to the top against Crystal Bowersox, Siobhan Magnus and Didi Benami, she certainly deserved to stick around longer than Urban.
Tim Urban’s performance last night of the Rolling Stones’ “Under My Thumb” with a reggae twist was a total joke (although it was a notch above Ke$ha’s performance of “Blah, Blah, Blah” during tonight’s results show). That combined with the fact he’s been inconsistent from the beginning and didn’t even make the original Top 24.
Poor Lacey. The judges opted not to use their one save of the season on Lacey after her performance of Brandi Carlile’s “The Story,” one of her better performances in the competition.
The judges’ save is back for a second season and can be used between now and when the Top 5 contestants remain, but it must be unanimous. Last season, the judges saved Matt Giraud from elimination two weeks before the save was to run out. He ultimately finished fifth. Note, that after the judges used the save, they had to eliminate two contestants the following week.

TweetWas Ohio “American Idol” favorite dethroned tonight?
The Top 12 “American Idol” contestants moved from a comfy-cozy stage to the big stage for the first time Tuesday to perform some big rock hits from the Rolling Stones.
The best? Siobhan Magnus with an over-the-top, dramatic stage show set to the tune of “Painted Black” complete with some crazy high notes. I don’t think she’s quite dethroned early favorite Crystal Bowersox, who just happens to be from the Toledo area, but she definitely had the most memorable performance of the night.
The worst? Tim Urban. He really had no competition for worst with his reggae take on the Stones that showcased no vocal range. But somehow, I fear Tim won’t be going home. Just a gut feeling. Since the judges don’t have the judges save again this season, maybe they can surprise us with a judges vote-off, sort of a veto power to send someone home who sucks.
Here’s a closer look at the Top 12’s performances:
Michael “Big Mike” Lynche
Song Choice: “Miss You”
Judges comments: Randy complimented Big Mike for his performance. Ellen said that was the way to start the night. Kara said Big Mike conveyed the message of the song and was hot on stage. Simon said the performance at times, especially the dancing, was corny. He sang the song well, but the performance itself verged on desperate.
Commentary: It would have been difficult to top last week’s performance of “A Woman’s Work,” which proved Mike has strong vocals, an ability to connect with the audience and a strong stage presence. But it was an overall good performance. Desperate? I don’t see that, but he can be a little overly dramatic on stage. He’s been that way since Hollywood Week. But it’s also part of his charm.
Rank: Four stars
Didi Benami
Song Choice: “Playing With Fire”
Judges comments: Randy said that was one of Didi’s best performances yet. Ellen said she sounded great and managed to make “fire” a two-word syllable. Kara said she really attacked the song with intensity and was two steps in the right direction toward defining herself as an artist. Simon said she is beginning to show what kind of artist she could be and that it was a solid performance and good song choice.
Commentary: I really like Didi’s voice. I can imagine her on the radio very easily. She has been inconsistent, though, so it’s hard to predict how far she can go against some big talent. If she keeps getting better, she could be one to watch
Rank: Four stars
Casey James
Song Choice: “It’s All Over Now”
Judges comments: Randy said Casey’s back and the bluesy guitarist is his vibe. Ellen said for most women, their hearts will start racing, but “for people like me, blondes” I thought it was fantastic. Kara said he was a rock star and she made a good song choice that brought country and soul and that it was his best performance. Simon said it was like an audition performance and that he didn’t do anything incredible. He has to do more and show he’s a star.
Commentary: I wasn’t as impressed as most of the judges. This performance was fun, but didn’t offer much beyond that. Take away the guitar and close your eyes for a few verses (let’s face it, Casey’s popularity is based largely on his looks), and the vocals themselves were pretty boring.
Rank: 3 stars
Lacey Brown
Song Choice: “Ruby Tuesday”
Judges comments: Randy said the arrangement was interesting and he was pleasantly surprised. Ellen said it was weird that she sat when she should have been standing and vice versa and that the performance was a bit sleepy. Kara said “she agreed with the guys” (was that a dig at Ellen or just stupidity?) and it was 50/50 for her and that she could do better. Simon said Lacey performs like an actress but that maybe she’s overthinking it performance wise, but there was nothing wrong with the vocals.
Commentary: It was slow and boring. It did get a little better toward the end, but I definitely felt like Lacey was trying way too hard to play to the camera instead of focus on the audience and the song itself. Lacey does has a really unique voice, like Didi, but voice isn’t enough in this competition.
Rank: 2 stars
Andrew Garcia
Song Choice: “Give Me Shelter”
Judges comments: Randy said he loved the song and Andrew and that the performance was pitchy. Ellen disagreed and said it was his best performance yet. Kara said there were great moments but she lacked connection with the performance. Simon said he gave it 100 percent but said something didn’t quite connect and that he genuinely hopes he survives another week.
Commentary: C’on Andrew! I really wish he’d get it right because I think he could be such an interesting recording artist/guitarist. I think there were moments, particularly in the second half of the performance, where he showed some star power, but overall it was pretty mediocre, especially sans guitar.
Rank: 2.5 stars
Katie Stevens
Song Choice: “Wild Horses”
Judges comments: Randy said it was a very strong performance. Ellen said it started pitchy but then she sounded amazing when she got into it. Kara said it’s never technically perfect and that she made nice variations. Simon said this is the only week where Katie has chosen a right song and gave it 100 percent.
Commentary: Katie has a really good voice, especially for a 17-year-old. She has such a grown-up sound. I think Katie’s biggest challenge, no surprise, is finding her identity as an artist. In a world of Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift, where could Katie find a niche?
Rank: 2.5 stars
Tim Urban
Song Choice: “Under My Thumb”
Judges comments: Randy said it was bizarre, and the reggae vibe didn’t serve him or the song well. Ellen said she felt like she was at a resort drinking a pina colada. For a night like this, it wasn’t enough. Kara again said she totally gets what “the guys are saying” and the risk didn’t pay off. Simon said it was great he took a risk, but that didn’t work and was a crazy decision.
Commentary: Zzzzzzzz. I think Ellen actually described it best. I was transported back to Sandals resort in Jamaica for a brief moment. The vocals weren’t anything special. But somehow, I think Tim will be back.
Rank: 1 star
Siobhan Magnus
Song Choice: “Paint It, Black”
Judges comments: Randy said Siobhan is “bringing the drama” to Season 9. Ellen said she really stood out tonight. Kara said that was the best interpretation of the Stones tonight and that she was having flashbacks of Adam Lambert from last season with all the drama. Simon said it was the standout performance of the night and that a lot of people will love it and others will hate it and that’s a good place to be.
Commentary: This girl deserves some credit. She has confidence, she keeps you guessing each week and she can hit some notes (a bit screamy but still fantastic). She could be a surprising contender this season.
Rank: 4.5 stars
Lee Dewyse
Song Choice: “Beast of Burden”
Judges comments: Randy said he has an amazing voice and was a cross between Rob Thomas and Dave Matthews. Ellen said she expected a tiny bit more and compared it to a hospital gown (as in not quite together). Kara said Lee is gaining confidence on the stage more than anyone else. Simon said he really likes Lee and that what’s holding him back is that he didn’t shine. Simon wants to see Lee have a “moment” and “stamp your mark” on this competition.
Commentary: Siobhan was a tough act to follow of course, so Lee gets bonus points for that, but all things considered, it was a pretty good performance. Lee has a great recording voice but he really needs to step up the star factor to make it to the top.
Rank: 3.5 stars
Paige Miles
Song Choice: “Honky Tonk Women”
Judges comments: Randy said he liked it. Ellen complimented her stage presence and both she and Kara applauded her for a great vocal despite a case of laryngitis. Simon said the song was a little generic but she delivered great vocals. The real issue is she hasn’t quite connected with the audience or the song yet.
Commentary: Now I finally see what Simon has been talking about every week: that Paige has probably the strongest vocals in the competition. Up until this week, we didn’t really hear what Paige can offer vocally. She had laryngitis? Wow. My biggest complaint about Paige is I have no idea what kind of artist she would be.
Rank: 3 stars
Aaron Kelly
Song Choice: “Angie”
Judges comments: Randy complimented Aaron for the tender moments in his voice. Ellen asked if he was trying to copy her hair and that it was a great performance and a standout. Kara said when he connects with a song, it’s very powerful. Simon said he chose the right song but that he sang it cleverly within his range and was one of his strongest performances.
Commentary: Aaron consistently delivers a pretty good vocal, but the performance itself was sort of boring for me. I can’t imagine Aaron has any reason to worry though.
Rank: 3 stars
Crystal Bowersox
Song Choice: “You Can’t Always Get What You Want”
Judges comments: Randy said it wasn’t her best, but that he’s always excited to see her perform. Ellen said it’s so effortless for Crystal and that tonight she injected some more personality into the performance. Kara said tonight she loosened up a bit and that she’s really easy to watch. Simon said this is the first time where Crystal was beaten by someone and that she needs to dig deep every week before coming on stage.
Commentary: Crystal really knows who she is. And that’s the best thing about her. It feels so natural and genuine when she comes on stage. There are never big surprises or major “wow” moments; she’s just really good.
Rank: 4 stars

TweetSurprising ‘American Idol’ Top 12 revealed
Now the competition is officially on
The Season 9 “American Idol” Top 12, revealed Thursday, is mostly predictable, but there were a few shockers.
Here is the Top 12 in no particular order:
Didi Benami
Siobhan Magnus
Paige Miles
Casey James
Tim Urban
Lee Dewyse
Crystal Bowersox
Big Mike Lynche
Lacey Brown
Aaron Kelly
Andrew Garcia
Katie Stevens
This means farewell to
Katelyn Epperly, who had a couple really strong performances with “Oh Darling” by The Beatles and Coldplay’s , but who made a really big mistake choosing Carole King’s “I Feel The Earth Move.” I will miss her crazy curly hair.
Todrick Hall, the singer/dancer who once performed with “American Idol” Season 3 winner Fantasia Barrino. He was the only contestant who has truly brought song and dance together on stage this season and actually, pretty much every season. Some people tried to dance but just did it badly.
Alex Lambert, who has a lot of potential, a strong voice and a mullet. I actually feel bad now for all my mullet cracks after his emotional farewell speech and performance. His heart was broken, and he apologized for his lack of confidence on stage. It must be so hard to go home so close to the next big step.
Lilly Scott, who was definitely the biggest shock of the night. Lilly had been consistently among the top performers and definitely had Top Four potential. Was it her Patsy Cline song choice last night? Maybe America couldn’t handle two non-mainstream artists this season (Lilly and Crystal)?
Who is lucky and needs to step up:
Paige Miles, whom Simon says has one of the best voices of all of the contestants but who hasn’t picked a song to showcase it yet)
Tim Urban, who must have some serious fans out there this season or someone is trying to sabotage this competition. Tim didn’t even make the original Top 24 (he was a late replacement for ineligible contestant Chris Golightly) and now he’s in the Top 12. What??? He certainly gets the most-improved award, but he’s not Top 12 material. I really hope he’s not the next Sanjaya though he does have awful hair. He deserved to go home, not Alex Lambert.
Lacey Brown, who has just been really inconsistent. She has a great look and is just really likable. She had a strong performance this week, which carried her through, but she’s also had some really weak ones.
Andrew Garcia, who wowed the judges and America with his acoustic version of Paula Abdul’s “Straight Up” during Hollywood Week, but who has struggled with song choice since. Even with a bad song choice, you can still see his originality, but if he hopes to be a real contender against some strong competition, he has got to pick the right songs. I’m glad he’ll be sticking around longer. He was one of very few people I remember from the auditions. That says something.
Katie Stevens, the sweet 17-year-old with a huge voice and huge potential but who also has really struggled with song choice. You could tell even Katie was shocked she made it over Lilly Scott.
Off topic but
While I’m thinking of it, what is up with Simon and Kara this season? The constant flirting (or whatever it is) is starting to creep me out almost as much as Ellen running up on stage Wednesday night to hug Tim Urban. His performance wasn’t that good
TweetWhich guys have proven they deserve to stay in “Idol” race?
Who deserves one of six guy spots in the Top 12?
After the Top 8 guys took to the stage tonight, one stood head and shoulders above the rest — literally and figuratively — and that’s Mike Lynche. His performance of “A Woman’s Work” by Maxwell was recording quality and Mike is certainly comfortable on stage.
I’d hate to go out on a limb, but he and Crystal Bowersox, the “leading lady” so far this season, could very well be the Final Two.
Who’s in jeopardy after tonight? As much as it pains me to admit, I think one of my early favorites could be in danger of going home. Andrew Garcia, who really stood out as a unique artist during the auditions and who wowed the judges with his rendition of Paula Abdul’s “Straight Up” during Hollywood Week, has struggled to find his footing the last three weeks.
I hope America gives him another chance and that Andrew can find the right songs to show what a unique artist he could be.
Who could also be going home? I think Alex Lambert (despite many high marks from judges and a unique voice) just lacks star quality. I think Tim Urban, despite a decent showing tonight, has had some really poor performances that are hard to look past — and they weren’t weak just because they were the wrong song choices … they were weak vocally.
Todrick Hall, who I thought was in serious trouble going into tonight’s competition, may have saved himself with the second-best performance of the night.
Here’s a recap of tonight’s performances:
Lee Dewyse
Song choice: “Fireflies” by Owl City while playing guitar
Vocals: Mediocre
Judges’ comments: Randy said it was an odd song choice, and despite a few pitch problems, it worked. Kara said Lee’s interpretation of the song was better than the original and while it wasn’t his best, it was solid. Simon said there was nothing to rave about, and that Lee is better than that song.
Overall impression: It wasn’t as memorable as some of Lee’s previous performances, but it should be enough to land Lee in the Top 12. I still think Lee will go far in this competition, but hopefully he’ll deliver some more impactful performances like he did in previous weeks. He’s the real rocker on the show this season.
Grade: B
Alex Lambert
Song choice: “Trouble” by Ray LaMontagne with guitar
Vocals: Strong
Judges’ comments: Randy said it was a good song choice, but there was no wow factor. Ellen said he gets better every week, but needs to gain confidence. Kara said the only thing standing in the way is himself because he’s stiff and not in the moment. Simon said he is mentally in the wrong place to the point he’s not relaxed or having a good time. Simon suggested imagining Randy in a bikini. I’m not so sure about that one.
Overall impression: Anyone have any scissors? I don’t think I’ll ever get past that mullet. But seriously, I’m not wowed by Alex. Maybe it’s the mullet, or maybe it’s just the lack of star power.
Grade: B
Tim Urban
Song choice: “Hallelujah” by Leonard Cohen
Vocals: Good
Judges’ comments: Randy said Tim walked in some pretty big shoes with that song choice (Jason Castro) and did pretty well. Ellen was so impressed she ran and gave him a hug. Kara said she thought he’d be going home but now he’s in it. Simon said that was a smart song choice, and his strongest performance so far.
Overall impression: I hate to admit it, but that performance was pretty good. I haven’t been a big Tim Urban fan. I thought he should have been sent home two weeks ago, but I can be persuaded otherwise. He’s certainly a contender for “most improved.”
Grade: B+
Andrew Garcia
Song choice: “Genie in a Bottle” by Christina Aguilera
Vocals: Mediocre
Judges’ comments: Randy said it was an interesting song choice but that it didn’t quite work because it didn’t have range. Ellen thought it was a great song choice though she wished he would have done more with it. Kara said Andrew has struggled since peaking so early, and that the performance just wasn’t great. Simon said it came across a little desperate and uncomfortable.
Overall impression: Poor Andrew will never live up to his Hollywood Week “Straight Up” performance. I still really like him and want to see him succeed, but he set the bar pretty high. I thought tonight’s performance was fun and at least showcased the fact that Andrew could be such a fun recording artist. I was excited that he was singing a little Xtina, but it just didn’t live up to Paula. Sigh …
Grade: B-
Casey James
Song choice: “You’ll Think of Me” by Keith Urban with guitar
Vocals: Strong
Judges’ comments: Randy said it was a safe choice and that he should go for more intensity. Ellen disagreed and thought it was great and that it felt comfortable. Kara said this was better than last week and much more honest but that a spark is still missing. Simon said it was his second best and that it made him sincere, but not something anyone will be raving about in 24 hours.
Overall impression: Casey will be around for weeks to come. This wasn’t his best effort, but he’s done more than enough to attract a loyal following — heck, probably based on looks alone. Well, it’s true.
Grade: B
Aaron Kelly
Song choice: “I’m Already There” by Lonestar
Vocals: Strong
Judges’ comments: Randy said the performance was really good, despite a slow start. Ellen said that Aaron has confidence beyond his years, but thought the song choice wasn’t terrific. Kara said Aaron’s a contender, but that the song choice wasn’t relevant to his life. Simon said that was “rubbish” and that it was the right type of song for Aaron, and it had emotion despite not being his strongest vocal performance.
Overall impression: Aaron is very likable and has a sound that meshes well with country music. He has a lot of talent for such a young age, and I think that alone will carry him pretty far in this competition. I thought it was a really strong vocal performance.
Grade: A-
Todrick Hall
Song choice: “Somebody to Love” by Queen
Vocals: Really strong
Judges’ comments: Randy said Todrick proved he could sing and why he deserves to be here. Ellen said it really worked like a gospel song. Kara said it was very dramatic at moments, but the singing was really good. Simon said it was good in parts and what he did tonight is prove he is a Broadway singer, not a recording artist. “It was a good song choice, and it may have saved you,” he said.
Overall impression: Todrick is a performer. He has really struggled with song choice and overdoing it the last two weeks, but I think this week he did make an impression. And yes, it was sort of like Broadway and “Glee,” and that’s why I really liked it. It’s the first time of the night the audience was up on their feet having a good time. The earlier performances of the evening were, well, sort of bland. Isn’t energizing the crowd part of what recording should be all about?
Grade: A-
Michael Lynche
Song choice: “This Woman’s Work” by Maxwell
Vocals: Amazing
Judges’ comments: Randy said it was “dope” and “hot.” Ellen said Big Mike is the one to beat now. Kara was moved to tears by the relevance of the song to his life. Simon said a performance like that was so needed tonight, and that Mike came out with a hard song and “100 percent nailed it.” It was the best performance of the season, Simon added.
Overall impression: While it was a little overly dramatic, it was an incredible performance.
Grade: A
On Thursday, we’ll learn who makes the Top 12.
Which four do you think will go home?
TweetWho deserves to make the Top 12 after tonight?
Who should go home based on tonight’s performances? It’s a toss-up between Paige Miles, Katie Stevens, Katelyn Epperly and Lacey Brown.
But I think there are good arguments for any one of these eight remaining ladies making the Top 12.
Here’s tonight’s play by play:
Katie Stevens
Song: Kelly Clarkson’s “Break Away”
Vocals: Good
Judges comments: Randy compared the performance to karaoke. Ellen commended Katie for her song choice but lacked feeling. Kara said this year we have people who know who they are and others don’t. “The singing needed to be perfect tonight, and it wasn’t.” Simon said Katie’s issue is that she hasn’t worked out what kind of artist she wants to be and that the performance was “gloomy,” but commended her for taking the artists’ advice.
Overall impression: Katie’s a talented singer, but this performance lacked the “wow” factor it needed to earn a spot in the Top 12. She also doesn’t have any standout performances from past weeks.
Grade: C+
Why she could be Top-12 worthy: She hasn’t really found herself on stage yet, but she is very likable, has a strong voice and could attract the youth vote.
Siobhan Magnus
Song: “House of the Rising Sun” by The Animals
Vocals: Strong
Judges comments: Randy commended Siobhan for surprising them and knows how to take risks. Ellen said she’s why she loves music and that the performance was captivating and current. Kara said Siobhan is so unique and for an “unlikely character” on the show, she’s doing great. Simon wasn’t a fan and thought the performance and outfit were weird and dark.
Overall impression: I thought it was a good showcase of her vocal range, though sort of dark. I imagine her performance from last week will carry her through.
Grade: B
Why she could be Top 12 worthy: Siobhan, while she is no Adam Lambert, has the guts to take some big risks on stage some work, some don’t. But she keeps you guessing, and that’s a good thing on a show like this.
Lacey Brown
Song: Brandy Carlisle’s “The Story”
Vocals: Unusual, but good
Judges comments: Randy and Ellen agreed that was Lacey’s best performance so far and showcased her distinctive voice. Kara said it was a “brilliant choice” and she’s back. Simon said he didn’t love the song, but she sang it really well, but it’s in danger of being forgotten.
Overall impression: I think Lacey has improved from the last couple performances, which were very dull, but I’m not sure her best performance will stand up against the competition.
Grade: B
Why she could be Top 12 worthy: There’s something captivating about Lacey. Maybe it’s her look, her personality or her stage presence. She has been inconsistent, so I guess it’s a question of whether people will remember good Lacey or bad Lacey.
Katelyn Epperly
Song: Carole King’s “I Feel the Earth Move” with keyboard
Vocals: Strong
Judges comments: Randy said he didn’t feel the right connection, and that there was “nothing special” about it. Ellen said she didn’t know if that was the song that would have wowed people and that it just wasn’t enough. Kara said she wasn’t connected like last week and the song was simple for such an important night. Simon said “it was kind of like request night on a Friday night at a restaurant.” “This may have been a mistake for you tonight.”
Overall impression: This wasn’t Katelyn’s best performance can’t argue with the judges on that one. But I think she has been one of the strongest in past week’s and hopefully that will be enough to keep her around.
Grade: C+
Why she could be Top 12 worthy: Tonight wasn’t her best, but over the last few weeks, Katelyn has been one of the top performers. She has a great voice and a great look (fabulous curly hair).
Didi Benami
Song: Fleetwood Mac’s “Rhiannon”
Vocals: Strong with guitar
Judges comments: Randy said it was much better than last week but that there wasn’t a “wow” moment. Ellen said that it was a lovely performance and she rebounded nicely from last week’s disappointing one. Kara said this performance was one of her favorite moments of the season. Simon said he agreed with Kara and that it was “head and shoulders above the rest” so far and that the whole performance was a “wow moment.”
Overall impression: I think Didi proved she should stick around. She has a really interesting sound. This was much better than previous performances.
Grade: B+
Why she could be Top 12 worthy: She has a really unique sound. Tonight, she chose a song that proved that.
Paige Miles
Song: “Smile” by Charlie Chaplin
Vocals: Mediocre
Judges comments: Randy said the song was way too big for Paige and “just didn’t work at all.” Ellen said the song is supposed to be uplifting, but it was sad. Kara said “it was all wrong” and tonight was not the night to do that. Simon said it was a horrible song choice and that the arrangement was awful and something you’d hear in the Holiday Inn in 1974. “It’s such a shame, you had so much potential you have no idea what kind of artist you want to be.”
Overall impression: That was really depressing and it did not show off Paige’s vocal range. I think Paige could be in danger of coming home because she doesn’t have any performances that really stand out among the rest of the talent.
Grade: C-
Why she could be Top 12 worthy: Week after week, the judges have criticized Paige for song choice, but always build her back up saying she has one of the best voices in the competition. People may keep her around based on that alone.
Crystal Bowersox
Song: “Give Me One Reason” by Tracy Chapman with electric guitar
Vocals: Wow
Judges comments: “This is what the show’s about love the honesty,” Randy said. Ellen said she needs new adjectives for Crystal. Kara said it’s easy for you because you know who you are and what you’ll do. Simon said you are one million billion percent in the Top 12 next week and definitely the most improved. “You’ve got confidence, and it’s yours to lose.”
Overall impression: Love her. She really is the female to beat.
Grade: A
Why she could be Top 12 worthy: If she’s not in the Top 12, heck, even the Top 2, there is something very wrong with this competition.
Lilly Scott
Song: Patsy Cline’s “I Fall to Pieces” with mandolin
Vocals: Good
Judges comments: Randy and Ellen loved the voice and originality. Kara said it was very contemporary. Simon said “I think you’re very brave choosing the song on a night like this. It was cute and quirky but that could have been risky.”
Overall impression: This seemed like a really odd song choice for Lilly. I’m still scratching my head. It was a good performance, but she took a step backward this week in my book.
Grade: B
Why she could be Top 12 worthy: Minus tonight’s risky song choice, Lilly has consistently been one of the best and has the advantage of knowing what kind of artist she wants to be. Now it’s your turn: Who’s on your Top 6 ladies list?
TweetWhat’s your early “Idol” Top 12 wish list?
Goodbye John Park, Jermaine Sellers, Michelle Delamor and Haeley Vaughn.
Did America get it right this week?
Half right. Half wrong.
How has Tim Urban managed to survive the last two rounds? He’s not good, and he didn’t even make the original Top 24 (he was a last-minute substitution for an ineligible contestant). Let’s hope he doesn’t stick around undeservingly as long as Sanjaya did a few seasons back.
Urban was better this week than last, but compared to the other contestants — including the two guys who went home tonight — he’s not even in the same league.
John Park unfortunately made the mistake of choosing the wrong songs despite having a really nice voice. Jermaine Sellers clouded his natural talents with way too many vocal tricks the last two weeks. Jermaine, I’ll really miss your fun sense of fashion. And John, there’s always Shania.
As for the ladies, Michelle Delamor should not have went home over Lacey Brown. But ultimately, neither are Top 12 worthy, so what’s one more week in the great scheme of things? America got it right with Haeley Vaughn, but the good news is she’s young and will have plenty of opportunities to come. Her final performance was really sad to watch. Poor girl. Imagine going through that disappointment in such a public way at such a young age.
Now, on a happier note, it’s prediction time. Here’s my Top 12 wish list in no particular order:
- Crystal Bowersox
- Lilly Scott
- Katie Stevens
- Katelyn Epperly
- Paige Miles
- Siobhan Magnus (she’ll keep us guessing)
- Andrew Garcia
- Michael Lynche
- Lee Dewyse
- Aaron Kelly
- Casey James
- Alex Lambert
I wish it didn’t have to be an even amount of boys and girls. I’d take Didi Benami over Alex “not Adam” Lambert any day.
What’s your Top 12 wish list?
TweetOhio “Idol” contestant could be the one to beat
So far, I think the ladies are leading the race to “American Idol” fame. A few of the male performances stood out last night (Michael Lynche and Lee Dewyse and Andrew Garcia has it in him), but the ladies were a bigger hit this week. Guys, you better step it up.
After tonight’s performances
Who should definitely stay? Ohio’s Crystal Bowersox, Katelyn Epperly, Lilly Scott, Siobhan Magnus
Who should definitely go? Haeley Vaughn, Lacey Brown
Who deserves a get out of jail free card? Katie Stevens, Didi Benami
Here’s tonight’s play-by-play:
Crystal Bowersox
Song: “Long as I Can See the Light” by Creedence Clearwater Revival
Vocals: Excellent
Judges comments: Randy said Crystal is the “truth”; she is not trying to be anybody else. Oh yes, and this season’s first: “That girl is hot!” Ellen said that performance was pure, raw natural talent and “amazing.” Kara said Crystal completely recovered from last week’s wrong song choice (Alanis Morrissette’s “Hand in My Pocket, although Kara wrongly said it was “You Outta Know”). Simon said that he completely “misunderestimated” (is that a word, Simon?) Crystal from last week. “This was the moment we realized with Kelly Clarkson that we had a serious artist,” he said.
Overall impression: Wow. Crystal is just amazing. It’s not necessarily my favorite type of music, but when she takes to the stage, I’m captivated. She has a powerful voice and is just so genuine. She really connects with her audience. She could very well win this competition.
Grade: A
Haeley Vaughn
Song: “The Climb” by Miley Cyrus
Vocals: Not good
Judges comments: Randy said “it was excruciating” and that Haeley had no connection to the song. Ellen said she shouldn’t stop smiling, but agreed it lacked emotion. Kara said a lot of people are rooting for Haeley and that she’s a really good performer, but that she needs to work on her vocals. Simon said it was “a complete and utter mess” and that it was ironic she was singing about climbing when she just fell.
Overall impression: Crystal is a tough act to follow. Haeley seems to have a loyal following, is incredibly likable and could really gain a fan base as a black country artist (her goal), but her vocals just don’t stand up to the competition. Her fan following may save her this week, though.
Grade: D+ (bonus points for the bright smile)
Lacey Brown
Song: “Kiss Me” by Sixpence None the Richer
Vocals: Good
Judges comments: Randy said he thought it was a good song choice but that it was very karaoke and lacked a special quality. Ellen disagreed and said it was “adorable” and a good song choice. Kara, who suggested the song choice last week, said the song showcased what was good about her voice and her personality but that she didn’t push it enough. Simon said it was marginally better than last week but that it wasn’t memorable enough.
Overall impression: It was a fun performance, and Lacey’s personality really shined through. I’m sure it was enough to carry her through to next week, but I don’t think she’s a real contender in this competition.
Grade: C+
Katie Stevens
Song: “Put Your Records On” by Corinne Bailey Rae
Vocals: Good
Judges comments: Randy said there were some bright moments, but she needs to look for songs that are bigger. Ellen said Katie has a great voice but that she needs to hear songs even younger and hipper. Kara said she’s frustrated because she sees so much potential in her and that she really started opening up toward the end of the song and that she needs to pick songs that have more impact. Simon said it’s frustrating because she made an attempt to be younger, but his issue is that she needs to tell the audience what kind of artist she wants to be.
Overall impression: Katie is struggling with song choice, but has a really good voice. I hope she can find her identity in this competition because if she does, she could go very far. Katie, only 17, is one of those people you really want to see succeed.
Grade: B-
Didi Benami
Song: “Lean on Me” by Bill Withers
Vocals: Good
Judges comments: Randy said deep-routed soul didn’t really work for Didi’s voice. Ellen said she loves Didi’s voice and had a great stage presence and energy, but that the song choice was off. Kara said it wasn’t good and that she should stick with her identity and that “we lost the uniqueness of your voice and vocal stylings that got you to this point.” Simon said the song was screechy and all over the place and that it’s frustrating because it was a wasted opportunity.
Overall impression: Didi was one of the more unique contestants during Hollywood Week and really set herself apart from the others with performances, including a Kara DioGuardi song, but the last two weeks, like Katie, Didi’s struggled to make the right choices. But Didi has a great voice, and I think her past performances will carry her through.
Grade: B-
Michelle Delamor
Song: “With Arms Wide Open” by Creed
Vocals: Strong
Judges comments: Randy said she didn’t do enough with the song. Ellen said she did do a lot with the song and it made her forget it was a rock song, however there were a few pitch problems. “It almost worked,” Ellen said. Kara disagreed and said it was her favorite performance of Michelle’s ever and that it was believable, despite a few imperfections. Simon agreed and said the first half was stronger than the second half and got about it 80 percent right.
Overall impression: Michelle has a lovely voice. This performance was middle-of-the-road, but certainly enough to keep her around.
Grade: B
Lilly Scott
Song: “A Change is Gonna Come” by Sam Cooke
Vocals: Strong
Judges comments: Randy said Lilly is unique and that it was his favorite of the night so far. Ellen says Lilly has “it.” Kara said Lilly had her first “moment” in the competition and that she is going to change the game. Simon said it was good but wasn’t as crazy about it but that Crystal was stronger.
Overall impression: Lilly knows her identity. That will carry her far in this competition. I agreed with Simon in that I thought Crystal was just a step in front of her and was more captivating, but Lilly could make this competition interesting.
Grade: A-
Katelyn Epperly
Song: “The Scientist” by Coldplay
Vocals: Excellent
Judges comments: Randy said he really liked it, despite a few pitch problems at the end. Ellen said it was way too slow. Kara said “I kind of love you,” but you’re all over the place, but she’s really good. She said Katelyn needs to figure out who she is quick. Simon said it was a smart song choice, but she needs to work on being less corny and that she “may have put herself back in the race.”
Overall impression: I was scratching my head when Katelyn announced she would sing Coldplay, but I was really taken by surprise in a good way. Yes, a little slow, but I loved it.
Grade: A-
Paige Miles
Song: “Walk Away” by Kelly Clarkson
Vocals: Excellent she can hit those high notes
Judges comments: Randy said he liked it, although the song didn’t showcase her big voice and her vocal range. Ellen said she changed just the right amount and brought energy and fun to the performance. Kara said she didn’t connect with the meaning of the song, meaning she was way happier than the song. Simon said he agreed with Randy in that it wasn’t the right song choice for her voice and was forgettable.
Overall impression: Definitely in the upper-half of tonight’s performances. I agree the song didn’t show off her talents. I want to hear more of this great voice the judges keep talking about to know if she really does have the best vocals.
Grade: B+
Siobhan Magnus
Song: “Think” by Aretha Franklin
Vocals: Good the last note was impressive, but she was inconsistent throughout the song
Judges comments: Randy said Siobhan picked the greatest singer (a huge risk) and slayed it. Ellen said you shouldn’t normally take on such a big song, but that it was excellent. Kara said the high note was amazing. Simon said it was part good and part bad, but that overall she is very talented.
Overall impression: Siobhan is another one to watch. She’s a contestant who will always keep you guessing, which can be a really good thing. But man, this chick is weird.
Grade: B+
Now it’s your turn: What did you think of tonight’s performances? Any bets on who might win or at least make the final four?
Tweet“American Idol” guys: Who should stay, who should go?
The Top 10 guys took to the stage tonight in a surprise twist as contestant Crystal Bowersox, from Ohio, was taken to the hospital earlier today, and was not allowed to perform under doctor’s orders, forcing “American Idol” producers to switch this week’s schedule. US Weekly is reporting Crystal suffered from diabetes complications.
As for the guys, well, I just don’t know what to think. They still have a lot to prove. Most seasons you can tell early on who’s going to make it to the finals or at least the final four. This season, I’m not so sure. Some early favorites have been disappointing so far, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed they’ll snap to it. Others seemingly have come out of nowhere and consistently impress. It should be an interesting road to the top.
Who should definitely stay based on tonight’s performances? Michael Lynche and Lee Dewyse
Who should go based on tonight’s performances? Jermaine Sellers and Todrick Hall, but possibly John Park because he just wasn’t memorable at all.
Who deserves a get out of jail free card? Andrew Garcia, Casey James and Aaron Kelley — we’ve seen what they can bring despite mediocre performances tonight.
Tonight’s theme was Billboard hits, and here’s how the guys stood up against these hits:
Michael Lynche
Song: “This is a Man’s World” by James Brown
Vocals: Strong
Stage presence: Strong
Judges comments: Randy said Big Mike is an R&B star. Ellen loved the song choice. Kara said tonight Mike went from a singer to potentially a great star. Simon said he went from “pussycat to lion” in one week and that the song choice was the perfect and his best performance so far.
Overall impression: Big Mike really redeemed himself after last week’s lackluster performance of “This Love” by Maroon 5 and showed us why he deserves to be here — he’s a natural-born performer.
Grade: A-
John Park
Song: “Gravity” by John Mayer
Vocals: Strong
Stage presence: Weak
Judges comments: Randy said he didn’t bring anything new or spicy to the performance and that it just wasn’t special. Ellen said it was the right song choice, but that it didn’t have enough emotion. Kara said it was way better than last week’s performance (“God Bless the Child” by Billie Holiday), but that he lacks a connection with the audience. She said he is a little bit safe and needs to take some risks in order to advance. Simon said he thinks Purple Haze may get their lead singer back and that it didn’t feel authentic. Although better than last week, Simon said it was a forgettable performance.
Overall impression: The judges were right on target with this one. Way better than last week’s snorer. I still really like John and want to see him stick around. He just needs to get more comfortable on that stage and, like the judges said, be willing to take some risks and show us what kind of artist he could be.
Grade: C
Casey James
Song: “I Don’t Wanna Be” by Gavin DeGraw
Vocals: So-So
Stage presence: Strong, though a little too guitar-focused
Judges comments: Randy said this is the kind of music he could see Casey recording as an artist. Ellen felt like everything was on paper, but that he needs to work on his performing skills. Kara (a huge Casey fan if you haven’t been watching) said he took two steps backward tonight, but that she’s still a fan. Simon said he agrees with Kara because tonight Casey “turned into somebody you’d see in any bar across America trying to be a rock star.”
Overall impression: Casey is certainly not the best singer in this competition, but he is a strong performer with a very commercial look — and therefore has some star potential. I think he’ll be around for awhile. Tonight, I think it was too much showing off with the guitar and not enough emphasis on singing.
Grade: B-
Alex Lambert
Song: “Everybody Knows” by John Legend
Vocals: Mediocre (really butchered that last note)
Stage presence: Mediocre, lacked confidence.
Judges comments: Randy said it was much better than last week and that he was much better with the guitar. Ellen said the “unripe banana” has ripened and that he has a unique style. Kara said everyone is rooting for Alex and that he has a very recordable voice. Simon said it was a million times better than last week and that he doesn’t seem to be in it to win it and that he needs to believe in himself.
Overall impression: I thought Alex should have went home last week, but America gave him another chance. I wasn’t as impressed as the judges were tonight, but he certainly was better than last week’s awful performance of “What a Wonderful World” by James Morrison and many of tonight’s other performers. Maybe it was just me, but I cringed during that last note.
Grade: B-
Todrick Hall
Song: “What’s Love” by Tina Turner
Vocals: Solid
Stage presence: Mediocre a little boring this week
Judges comments: Randy said Todrick is great, but is changing the arrangements too much. Ellen said he should sing and move and play to his strengths and didn’t think it was the right song choice. Kara agreed. Simon was pretty harsh: “move but don’t sing,” and compared it to a theme-park performance.
Overall impression: I don’t agree with Simon’s theme-park comment, but that performance just didn’t work. It lacked energy, which is what Todrick does best, and the arrangement was too weird. Todrick wants to be an artist who sings and dances, and he should play to that strength and really show himself as a performer. It’s definitely in him.
Grade: C-
Jermaine Sellers
Song: “What’s Going On” by Marvin Gaye
Vocals: Good, but overdone
Stage presence: Strong.
Judges comments: Randy said it was definitely better than last week’s performance of “Get Here” by Oleta Adams and had some bright moments, but wasn’t great overall. Ellen complimented Jermaine’s style, but said that the performance just didn’t work. Kara said he is hitting some great notes, but that it’s too overdone and that he needs to focus on the meaning of the song. Simon said he’s frustrated because Jermaine waters down the songs by adding in so many vocal tricks and comes across as old-fashioned.
Overall impression: It’s hard to disagree with the judges on this one.
Grade: C-
Andrew Garcia
Song: “You Give Me Something” by James Morrison
Vocals: Strong
Stage presence: Good
Judges comments: Randy said it was pitchy and that Andrew is way better than that. He also urged Andrew to be more quirky. Ellen said there were a few pitch problems, but the real problem was that he set the bar so high with his Hollywood Week performance of Paula Abdul’s “Straight Up.” Kara agreed that since that performance, it’s been going downhill and that he’s a rhythmic singer and should stick with songs that showcase that. Simon said it is frustrating that Andrew hasn’t picked the right song in two weeks and that Andrew is better than “OK.”
Overall impression: C’mon Andrew. I’m rooting for you. I do think it will be hard to live up to “Straight Up,” because that performance was so fun and so unexpected. But he has to at least try. Andrew has a really captivating voice, but he’s playing it way too safe.
Grade: B-
Aaron Kelley
Song: “My Girl” by the Temptations
Vocals: Good
Stage presence: Strong and more confident
Judges comments: Randy and Ellen commended Aaron’s confidence and the song showed off his vocals, but maybe wasn’t the best fit. Kara said she liked the performance and that he’s consistent. Simon said he didn’t like the song and that it was all over the place and that he needs to decide what kind of artist he wants to be and that the arrangement was too old-fashioned.
Overall impression: I didn’t think Aaron’s performance was as strong as last week’s performance of “Here Comes Goodbye” by Rascal Flatts, but that he managed to prove with his country twist on the song that he has a strong voice and deserves to stick around.
Grade: B
Tim Urban
Song: “Come on Get Higher” by Matt Nathanson
Vocals: So-so
Stage presence: So-so
Judges comments: Randy said it was very karaoke and that nothing jumped out. Ellen said he should act and would be great for a show like “Glee,” but that singing is not his strong suit. Kara liked the song choice but said that he didn’t make it his own. Simon said it was a big improvement from last week and that he listened to the criticism and was more relevant tonight than some of the other singers.
Overall impression: Certainly better than last week’s simply awful rendition of “Apologize,” by OneRepublic, but I still think Tim doesn’t have what it takes to last in this competition, vocally and as a performer. He just can’t measure up to some of his competitors.
Grade: C
Lee Dewyze
Song: “Lips of an Angel” by Hinder
Vocals: Strong
Stage presence: Lee was a little nervous without his guitar
Judges comments: Randy said he’s a huge fan and liked the performance despite a couple pitch problems. Ellen said there was so much passion and intensity in that performance. Kara said he thought it was better than last week, and that she could hear him on the radio right now. Simon said vocally he is head and shoulders above everyone else on this side of the competition and that he needs to gain confidence on stage, fast. “You may be the one to beat,” Simon said.
Overall impression: Finally! A memorable performance. Lee is definitely the dark horse in this competition. We saw little of him up until the live shows and now he seems to be one of a few who are really in it to win it and who knows what kind of artist he wants to be.
Grade: B+
