Surprising ‘American Idol’ Top 12 revealed
Now the competition is officially on
The Season 9 “American Idol” Top 12, revealed Thursday, is mostly predictable, but there were a few shockers.
Here is the Top 12 in no particular order:
Didi Benami
Siobhan Magnus
Paige Miles
Casey James
Tim Urban
Lee Dewyse
Crystal Bowersox
Big Mike Lynche
Lacey Brown
Aaron Kelly
Andrew Garcia
Katie Stevens
This means farewell to
Katelyn Epperly, who had a couple really strong performances with “Oh Darling” by The Beatles and Coldplay’s , but who made a really big mistake choosing Carole King’s “I Feel The Earth Move.” I will miss her crazy curly hair.
Todrick Hall, the singer/dancer who once performed with “American Idol” Season 3 winner Fantasia Barrino. He was the only contestant who has truly brought song and dance together on stage this season and actually, pretty much every season. Some people tried to dance but just did it badly.
Alex Lambert, who has a lot of potential, a strong voice and a mullet. I actually feel bad now for all my mullet cracks after his emotional farewell speech and performance. His heart was broken, and he apologized for his lack of confidence on stage. It must be so hard to go home so close to the next big step.
Lilly Scott, who was definitely the biggest shock of the night. Lilly had been consistently among the top performers and definitely had Top Four potential. Was it her Patsy Cline song choice last night? Maybe America couldn’t handle two non-mainstream artists this season (Lilly and Crystal)?
Who is lucky and needs to step up:
Paige Miles, whom Simon says has one of the best voices of all of the contestants but who hasn’t picked a song to showcase it yet)
Tim Urban, who must have some serious fans out there this season or someone is trying to sabotage this competition. Tim didn’t even make the original Top 24 (he was a late replacement for ineligible contestant Chris Golightly) and now he’s in the Top 12. What??? He certainly gets the most-improved award, but he’s not Top 12 material. I really hope he’s not the next Sanjaya though he does have awful hair. He deserved to go home, not Alex Lambert.
Lacey Brown, who has just been really inconsistent. She has a great look and is just really likable. She had a strong performance this week, which carried her through, but she’s also had some really weak ones.
Andrew Garcia, who wowed the judges and America with his acoustic version of Paula Abdul’s “Straight Up” during Hollywood Week, but who has struggled with song choice since. Even with a bad song choice, you can still see his originality, but if he hopes to be a real contender against some strong competition, he has got to pick the right songs. I’m glad he’ll be sticking around longer. He was one of very few people I remember from the auditions. That says something.
Katie Stevens, the sweet 17-year-old with a huge voice and huge potential but who also has really struggled with song choice. You could tell even Katie was shocked she made it over Lilly Scott.
Off topic but
While I’m thinking of it, what is up with Simon and Kara this season? The constant flirting (or whatever it is) is starting to creep me out almost as much as Ellen running up on stage Wednesday night to hug Tim Urban. His performance wasn’t that good
