Disco disaster for some on American Idol

Disco night on American Idol and I’ve been so excited to see what these kids do with some good old classic disco. Not a lot of chit chat at the beginning and I’m thrilled that we are jumping into the music quickly. Remember, two go home tomorrow night.

Lil Rounds sings Chaka Khan’s I’m Every Woman.

My take: one more less than stellar performance from Lil. Good voice, looks like she is enjoying herself but absolutely nothing original about the song.

Judges take: Randy thinks she got the party started but not in a memorable way. Kara says she has been waiting to hear Lil sing something by Chaka Khan but she is not sure it was worth the wait. Wow. Paula tells everyone that Lil had vocal problems yesterday and was complete vocal rest so she did an amazing job considering that. Simon pretty much tells Lil this will be her last night.

Kris Allen chose Donna Summer’s She Works Hard for the Money? Oh, this should be interesting!

My take: Kris brings out the guitar and with a great, non-disco sounding, arrangement I’m a little surprised. I’m not sure that I love it, but I don’t dislike it either. This is odd hearing this melody and lyrics to this vibe, but it’s not bad. Definitely original, no doubt about that.

Judges take: They loved it! Kara says, “It actually sounded like it could go on your record.” Paula thinks it sounds has a Santana feel to it. Simon thinks this performance was a polar opposite of Lil’s. Randy thinks that Kris is ready for the big time.

Danny Gokey picks Earth, Wind & Fire’s September.

My take: This song suits Danny’s voice and I have to say I’m glad the glasses are back. They are just “him.” Anyway, the song, he did a good job and the song suits him. He’s energetic but not real smooth with some of the dance moves but its okay, because it’s Danny.

The judges take: Randy was worried about the song choice but thinks Danny made it into something that really worked for him. Kara, also worried about this song, but she’s impressed. Paula thinks Danny has one of the sexiest voices ever.” Simon can’t argue with anything anyone’s said but didn’t feel any star power.

Allison Iraheta sings Donna Summer’s Hot Stuff.

My take: I really like Allison’s rock take to this song but she also changed it enough to be interesting. She is just amazing. Near the end there were a couple weird rhythms but her vocals were incredible. As always.

The judges take: Randy doesn’t love the arrangement but he thinks she’s one of the best singers in the competition. Kara wasn’t sure about slowing the song down but it was the right song and she sang it like a 9 out of 10. Paula likes the edginess of the arrangement and Simon believes Allison is an underdog at this point in the competition but thought her performance was brilliant.

Adam Lambert does If I Can’t Have You from the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack.

My take: I knew he was going to something that no one expected when he came out in a suit tonight and he did not disappoint. I’ve almost run out of words for this guy and imaginative ways to say how incredible he is. He has to win. There’s no way he can’t at this point. Just amazing vocally and emotionally. Goosebumps.

Judges take: Randy says Adam’s showing the audience his incredible range. “You are ready right now.” Kara has a hard time coming up with words too. She doesn’t know what to say other than he is brilliant. Paula thinks it “is as if you tore your heart out and left it on the stage.” When they cut to her at one point looks like she was fighting back tears. Simon says brilliant, immaculate, etc., etc.

Matt Giraud picks Stayin’ Alive the week after he almost gets eliminated.

My take: Matt adds a cool funk to this disco song but I’m afraid that this performance isn’t going to be good enough right after Adam. I’m afraid this may actually be his last night.

Judges take: Randy didn’t love the arrangement but thinks this year’s Top 7 is one of the most talented the show has ever seen. Kara thinks the performance was solid. Paula thinks Matt “picks songs like she bowls — sometimes it’s a gutter ball, sometimes it’s a strike.” She thinks this was a strike. Of course Simon jumps on this by saying it was more of a gutter ball. He thought it sounded desperate.

Anoop Desai sings Donna Summer’s Dim All the Lights.

My take: Anoop looks hot, hot, hot with facial hair. Wow. This was a great choice for Anoop. He has the ballad thing that does so well for him and then the up tempo that he loves so much.

Judges take: Randy thought it was dicey, but boy can he sing. Kara thinks it was one of Anoop’s best performances to date. Paula likes the look and wants him to smile more. Simon disagrees completely! “That was mediocre at best.”

Bottom three this week? I’m thinking Matt, Lil and Allison with Lil and Matt going home. So, what do you think?

My favorite performance of the night was Danny’s. I love his voice and he has fun singing. I always enjoy his songs. I am not sure about Kris. Kris seems boring. He always sings the same thing over and over. Adam is original. Allison is okay, she just screams all the time. Matt is awesome and so is Anoop. Lil is pretty good. I think the bottom 3 will be Allison, Kris and anoop. Not sure which two will go though. I think Matt would be safe, since he was saved last week. I am still thinking a Danny and Adam finale. those two guys are great.

My prediction for this week: bottom three will be Matt, Anoop, and Lil, with Matt safe. I agree with others that Danny lacks creativity. He was my favorite coming out of Hollywood week, but he lost his spark a couple of weeks ago. And please bring back the poll :)

Lil has got to go. Kris needs to go. Matt should have gone last week. The judges were stupid to have revived him. Anoop and Danny can stay or go. Allison and Adam are best of the best. Unfortunately this is a phone dialing contest, not a talent contest and most of those who vote don’t know talent.

Heather - I have loved Danny since the beginning and truthfully - he was the reason that actually got me to watch the whole season. But as much as I love him - and as convinced as I was that he was in for the long haul - I too am no longer confident that he will be on that final show. Kris has really been showing some growth, while Danny seems to be in “cruise” mode a little bit. And I do agree with some of you that Adam’s screech gets annoying. It can be cool and does fit in some places - but it’s like he does the same one on EVERY song! Heartfelt ballad? Still gotta insert my “rocker squeal” in there - he REALLY lost me when he did that in the middle of his song last night. It didn’t fit - it didn’t work - and it was ooooooooh so predictable of him. I don’t feel like he has it sewn up just yet! Each of them really need to bring it each week! Hey Kelle - our poll is missing again. There are lots of folks that won’t post but will click a vote. :)

There were some pleasant surprises with disco week! Kris was awesome. I absolutely loved his version of the song - I loved the musicians on the stage with him - the whole arrangement. He was actually the only one I listened to more than once. I’m sorry, but he is giving Adam and Danny a run for their money. It does get frustrating when you keep hearing the judges say that they will both be in the finals - what does that tell the rest of them? I’ve always liked Danny and he did do a good job last night. I didn’t mind Adams song until he screeched a few notes towards the end - that ruined the whole song for me. I sincerely hope he does not win. I’ve also been a fan of Matt and didn’t think he was horrible last night. Anoop did good too, but I thought it was a little boring. Allison was decent, but I’m getting a little tired of her rocker voice. Lil is ready to go home. My bottom three - Lil, Allison and Anoop or Matt (both of the guys reluctantly). I think it will probably be Lil and Matt heading home.

Danny & Adam will be in top 2 this year with is being very close in votes but I give it to Danny he has always been my favorite from the begging, but Adam has grown on me but now is too predictable from week to week. Danny has it all. My bottom three this week are Lil, Anoop & Allison with Lil & Allison going home.

I’m thinking that Lil’, Anoop and sadly Matt might be the actual bottom 3. My preferred bottom three? Lil’, Danny and Anoop with Lil or Danny going home. When are people going to see/hear that he really can’t sing to save his life? He’s not even that attractive so I don’t know what it is about him that people are so in love with? Without Idol, his singing would never even be radio quality! Lil needs to get over herself and head home. She’s not nearly as good as she thinks she is and every time she pouts when the judges don’t praise her it makes me like her that much less. I loved Kris, Adam and Matt last night. Allison was pretty good as well. Anoop did alright but at this point, he’s not going to win the whole thing so sadly I’m OK with him going too… Oh and Kelle, you are so right! He does look hot with the facial hair!

I can say that I wasn’t bored! Lil does have an awesome voice, and I think she could kill it on the karaoke circuit - but I still have no clue who SHE is and I’m tired of trying to figure it out. I really hope she goes home, but Votefortheworst is trying to keep her on. With the competition being SO tight, their game can really skew things. I think it should be her and Matt to leave - but Matt could be swapped out for Anoop. I’m not afraid to admit that I love Anoop and thought he was adorable last night. He was probably my favorite. I know he will go soon - but I want him there as long as possible! I just don’t know - it’s so tight! They are a really talented bunch - it’s not like any of them are terrible. I am worried about Danny - he’s good, he’s solid, he’s consistent - but I think he has failed to have many “wow” moments. Allison - love her but think that her singing style fails to connect with the kids her age and her age fails to connect with those would love her singing style. Adam - I dunno - I do like him. He is theatric in a Freddie Mercury kind of way - but I don’t think that is a bad thing. I was bugged by his performance this week though. There is making a song your own and then there is making a song unrecognizable. It’s like he “stole” lyrics and plugged them into a different song. I love that song, so I wasn’t really a fan of that version. It was okay and I appreciated his artistry - not something I’d want to listen to over & over. Can’t wait to see the results!

I think the bottom four are Lil, Anoop, Matt and Danny. I would hope that Lil and Anoop or Matt go home, but I would not be shocked to see Danny out in what would surprise others. (And the judges wasted their save last week.)

I agree with you Helen. Adam is very theatrical, almost to the point of annoying. At times he screaches and reminds me of fingernails on a chalkboard. Danny is the real deal and stays true to himself every time. I have loved every one of his performances! I love his raspy voice. I think Kris is really coming into his own and is really stepping up the competition. His version of the song last night was awesome. I love Allison. She can really belt it out and has a very unique quality to her voice. Amazing at only age 16. I like Matt alot, but I don’t think he will win the competition. My bottome three are Lil, Anoop and Matt with Lil and Anoop going home. We will see tonight!

I THINK THE OTHER “JUDGES” ARE “RIGHT ON”. I BELIEVE ADAM WILL THE CONTEST & IF HE DOESN’T, SOMETHING IS VERY WRONG. THE TWO GOING HOME WILL BE LIL AND MATT. GREAT SUMMER & I DON’T THINK ALLISON GETS NEARLY THE CREDIT SHE DESERVES.

Kudos to all of them for taking on Disco. While everyone admires the true expertise Adam shows with his brilliant arrangements he is most definitely most theatrical. Danny gives it his true self when he works his way thru every arrangement consistently and with a true shine. Our little red headed singer has a fantastic voice and can deliver - no doubt! Lil has a great voice but jumps around in leaps and bounds and no one knows which LILLY pad she belongs on. Matt may leave but my hat is off to him and I admire him as a person. Anoop - one bad ending shouldnt send him home hopefully he was good. CHRIS watch out he is a hard worker and showing his lights are on…move over Adam….

I have a strong feeling that the result tomorrow would be at least half a shocker. Why? It would be Lil’s final exit… and Danny Gokey’s, too!

Anoop is out. His glee club reditions of ballads are boring at best! And those eyebrows! Sorry, but you are wrong about him!

I am not feelin’ the Adam love. My favorite is Allison. Lil and Matt (or possibly Anoop) will be going home. (unless ‘vote for the worst’ gets their way and saves Lil)

Adam is good, but to me, he is now really predictable. It’s either a different ballad or a scream fest. Kris was cool with the Donna Summer tune, I liked it. Danny was good. We now know that Anoop can only really sing ballads. My bottom 3=Lil, Matt and Allison with Matt and Lil going home.

Adam’s vocal range is at zero, every song is the same, too bad the winner has already been determined, would love to see singers grow and build confidence instead of thinking they can’t win this from the get go. First season I will be glad when this is over.

My only comments this week are that I hope America doesn’t listen to the judges & get it right. They have made their favorites known early & are committed to sticking by them & putting the other performers down each week. My bottom 3 are Kris, Anoop & Allison, with Kris & Allison going home. I hope Lil can continue to withstand the weekly barrage from the judges, because she is a very talented vocalist!

Kelle, I agree with you all the way. My mom is going to get for saying this…(By the way, I am a 26 year old married mother of 2 and I still fear her lol) My bottom 3 is also Lil, Matt and Allison with Lil and Matt going home. My mom thinks Allison was great, and I didn’t think so. And I told her that I would be putting Allison in my bottom 3 and she threatened my life! LOL! I love you Dianna! Her bottom 3 was Anoop, Lil and Matt with the same 2 going home. Kris did a good job. I was scared at first, but I liked it. Lil, poor Lil. She is over thinking it. Matt did waaayyyy 2 much. Anoop was good, except that last note. Still love him though. Adam was wonderful… Again. Danny was great 2! This week, he brought that wow factor back for me. I really enjoyed his performance.

I think that you are a huge Anoop Desai fan, and that you are in denial. Anoop is going home. He’s been in the Bottom 3 the last three weeks, and this is his week. My prediction: Lil shocks the world and survives. Matt and Anoop go home.
