‘American Idol’s’ Sanjaya…can he get any worse?
I want to start by reminding everyone to vote tonight on your favorite Idol and the one that must go home Sanjaya on the DDN.com American Idol poll.
So it’s Gwen Stephani night. I’ve always thought she was beautiful but she looks even prettier if that’s possible tonight. She has the most flawless complexion. It actually looks airbrushed. I was surprised with her demeanor because she’s so edgy and wild on stage but she seemed almost demure in the opening interview. And she really gave some pretty pointed comments about the singers. This should be good tonight.
LaKisha Jones
Singing Last Dance by Donna Summer I was so glad to see that she sang something most of the viewing audience would know instead of the broadway-esque choices she’s been making lately. I love LaKisha but I think she needed to bring it up a little more to compete with Melinda, Blake and Jordin. The judges were happy to welcome the “young” LaKisha back and so was I.
Chris Sligh
Everything Little Thing She Does by the Police was a great choice for Chris. There were a couple pitchy parts but overall I really liked this. I wish the performers didn’t feel like they always have to be all over the stage. I know it’s good for performance points but it isn’t always necessary. The bouncy dancing thing he did was kind of goofy but I did really like Chris doing this song. Paula and Randy said he wasn’t keeping with the tempo but I rewound it and it didn’t bug me. Simon thought it was a mess but I didn’t see that at all.
Gina Glocksen
Gwen sounded like she was a Gina fan as I am. I’ll Stand By You was a great choice for Gina. I thought she was confident and only struggled on a couple of notes out of her range. And the crowd goes wild Randy thought it was one of the best performances of hers ever (and I would agree), Paula blah, blah, blah, and Simon said it was her best performance! Then he added it was the best performance so far tonight which was a huge compliment seeing that LaKisha sang earlier.
Sanjaya Malakar
I’m not real sure that Gwen Stephani was a big fan of Sanjaya’s version of No Doubt’s Bathwater. In fact, I think she pretty much wrote him off. He was awful! Awful! He looked awful and he sang worse. Awful! What was he thinking with that seven ponytail faux-hawk hair! Is he trying to get kicked off the show? I think someone has paid him to be as bad as possible to see how far he can go. Simon says it’s obvious that it doesn’t matter what they say anymore that Sanjaya is in his own little universe and people vote for him anyway.
Haley Scarnato
True Colors by Cindy Lauper was what I thought was another good song choice this evening. I think Haley has really grown in the last several weeks because I was surprised she even made it into the Top 12 and now I think she gets better each week so I’m a little surprised that the judges didn’t like it, sweet but forgettable Simon said.
Phil Stacey Gwen was pleasantly surprised by Phil’s rendition of Every Breath You Take by the Police and so was I. It was a good song choice for him and oh, oh Phil, those blue eyes!
Melinda Doolittle
Melinda chose another Donna Summer song, Heaven Knows. Gwen was a huge fan. The stylists try to young Melinda up and it just doesn’t ring true for me but there’s no doubt this girl can sing! And I think she can probably sing anything. As good as she was, it wasn’t my favorite performance of hers by a long shot. If course the judges loved her. Okay, as much as I love her may I be the first to say the doe eyed look of terrified anticipation she gets waiting for the judges comments is starting to get a little old. I think Ryan even picked up on that with his comment about still looking so scared.
Blake Lewis
Love Song by the Cure was Blake’s choice. Gwen worried about the beat boxing and once he started singing I could understand why. It has a nice slow reggae feel and thank goodness he left the beat boxing out! Good song choice but he was a little pitchy in parts. Blake is going to be a pop idol like Chris Daughtry no matter how far he goes. The male judges thought it was a bit boring but Paula didn’t think so. I think it
Jordin Sparks
It surprised both me and Gwen that Jordin chose No Doubt’s Hey Baby. I think she wanted to show some versatility and youth and I’m not so sure it paid off. She was pretty nervous and I think it showed. Now Randy thought it was brilliant, Paula loved it and Simon thinks she’s the one that has grown the most in the show.
Chris Richardson
Another No Doubt song by Chris R with Don’t Speak. It was okay, but as Simon would say pretty forgettable. I wonder if Idol put him last just in case America decided to switch channels to Dancin’ with the Stars at 9:00 p.m. Personally, they should have left Blake or Melinda for last but who am I? Randy called it “interesting” before he called it good. Paula thought it was good and Simon thought he struggled with his vocals.
Okay, now it’s time to vote for your favorite on our DDN.com poll. Who is going tomorrow night?

Sanjaya is pathetic. This show is becoming an “American Joke”. There needs to be some other way of voting especially when they already voted off some good people for somebody that definitely should not be there. I say let there be a veto power by the Judges.

Sanjaya, Love him or hate him doesn’t much matter. The teeny boppers adore him! I told my husband when I saw him singing with his siter taht the “kids” would love him. Is he terrible? No, not really. A little pitchy, but quiet. I could see listening to him on a cd driving to Cincinnati. Not my first choice but then I would probably chose Frank Sinatra. Gina is my pick today! But sanjaya has a presence and he just doesn’t care! It will be fun to see what happens tonight!

The thing to do is, to vote for the worst performer. It has worked so far with Hicks and Sanjaya. It is a national craze.

I agree, Sanjaya must go home and I can’t believe he has made it this far. It’s horrible! He can’t sing! Gwen is beautiful, I alomst didn’t recognize her without all the make-up! She even seems kinda shy which is weird, but I love her, she’s wonderful! I can’t wait for tonights show.

Wow…. Sanjaya has got to go. This guy is such a joke and he is making the whole show into a joke… I was really impressed with Melinda again as well as Gina. I am a big fan of Chris Richardson, I thought his rendition was great. I didn’t care for Jordin’s take on Hey Baby…. It made me cringe and I thought there wasn’t anything special about it at all.

As far as Blake goes, he may be cool, but he’s a hack. “Love Song” by the Cure may have been a good choice for him, but the “Reggae feel” that he gave it was not his own. The band, 311, remade that song in 2004 and it was featured on the “50 First Dates” soundtrack. If you recall, he said that 311 was his favorite band when he sang “All Mixed Up”. Way to keep it fresh, dude. It reminds me of “Stevie Wonder night” last season when Chris Daughtry sang “Higher Ground” in “Red Hot Chili Peppers” fashion (from 1989) and all the judges gave him credit for making it his own. If you can’t tell, me no likey the copycats.

Well, the stupid DVR wasn’t working correctly last night - so, I missed the first 4 performers. I came in on Sanjaya’s song and after taking one look at him, I had no problem walking away from the tv to tuck my daughter in! I wasn’t blown away by anyone that I did see last night. But, I’m still sticking with my favorites…Blake and Jordin to the end!

“He Who Must Be Voted Out” - snort - I like that, Michael - lol! You know - I’ve been cutting Sanjaya some slack - I recognize that he is a teenybopper idol because my daughter loves him - but last night was absolutely ridiculous. I swear you’re right Kelle - it’s like he’s TRYING to see how bad he can be and still stay on the show! What worries me is that he’s never in the bottom even! Maybe he will be tonight - hard to say. As time wears on, some early break-outs are fading (Chris Sligh - who I still think has a better future in sit-coms) and others are stepping up and winning me over. Haley bores me, I just can’t feel Phil and I think that Jordin is adorable but that she bit off a bit more song than she could chew last night. I loved Gwen’s comments - very revealing. I guess it surprised me a bit - you see this edgy rock star and I never would have thought she had such a great feel for and knowledge of music. I guess I SHOULDN’T be surprised - but sometimes you think of them as these icons that some producers sets up and tells them what to do and manipulates it in the studio. She really impressed me last night - I have always liked her anyway - but my respect for her as a true artist increased. I’m with Simon - Melinda’s outfit was a mess last night! Ugly. There is no doubt that Melinda can sing, but the problem for me is that I don’t like watching her. And yeah - that wide-eyed thing is getting old - makes her look like she doesn’t have a lick of sense or something. She is best suited for radio with me. Most of the performances are still just pretty darn forgetable for me - I am not seeing stars here. I think that Gina is the one that has stepped up and taken over as my favorite, but I can’t see myself wanting her albums like I do with Taylor and Chris and Elliot! Time will tell - it is interesting to watch them evolve as performers and see who can truly rise to the challenge.

I love Sanjaya! He makes the show entertaining. Melinda is getting old, don’t think she sang that well. Chris Sligh was really bad last night, think he might be the one to go tonight. The best performance last night was Gina.

I think Melinda did exactly what she needed to do — change up her style to show versatility. Meanwhile, I don’t see Sanjaya going off for several more weeks. Not when the nation is filled with 13-year-old Ashleys sobbing at the very sight of him. I predict Chris or Haley will go tonight.

Gina stunned me last night with her performance. She was great. I have always liked her but thought she didn’t have a chance against some of the favorites. I won’t even mention He Who Must Be Voted Out.
