Is ‘American Idol’ fixed?

After Thursday evenings results show I momentarily questioned whether or not American Idol is fixed because I could not understand why Antonella and Sanjiya remain. One blog poster responded something like “of course it is.”

Consider me naïve, and after considerable thought, honestly I do not think it’s fixed. I think that there are official like people who closely watch these things. I remember something about a game show that was fixed in the 50s I think and it was huge news. Can you imagine what kind of reaction there would be if it came out that American Idol was?

I want to believe in the basic goodness of people and I know that this is naïve as well but for now, I choose to believe that America is choosing the results, NOT the producers of the show.

What do you believe?

sanjaya should not be on the show that’s why he was shocked when he didn’t get voted of last night. he has the whole Indian comunity voting in seprate votes. I definatley won’t be suprrised if he doesn’t win. Because he can’t sing at all and once again he knows he should have been voted off instead of brandon.

well one theory is that american idol outsources to call centers to india. after seeing that sanjaya made it past the first round, i was surprised. but after last weeks show, i’m more concerned than surprised.

Has anyone ever heard of votefortheworst.*? These guys vote for the worst in the competition just to mess up the show. Last year they voted for “Chicken Little” then switched over to Kellie. The year before they encouraged voting for Scott Savoy.

I don’t think it’s fixed. I agree with Rob - people vote out of sympathy for those that they feel are vulnerable. I know I’ve done that in the past - voted for someone that I don’t necessarily think could win it all, but that I don’t want to see go home yet. I think in Sanjiya’s case - he’s probably getting votes from an older audience - like Chicken Little (can’t even remember his real name!) - and like I think Clay did too. Eventually, they’ll get weeded out - but, unfortunately - some people with more talent - not necessarily the best - but, more than them - will be sacrificed.

I have always thought this show was fixed from the start. Since it is an entertainment show, they are perfectly allowed to have the results come out any way they wish. We can vote and vote as much as we want, but if the producers want it another way, then that is what will happen. It is purely a money making show and also the producers who will later produce the records want to make more money. So it is probably true that they will allow the person they believe who will be able to rake in the most bucks will win. To me, it is common sense.Let the people think they have a say so they will get more involved, but inevitably it is who they want. I also feel that the comments they make are scripted ahead of time, especially because we know they hear them in advance at the dress rehearsal. So if you can accept this idea and still enjoy the show, then you will be ahead of the game.

American Idol is one of the few “reality” shows I would bet money is not fixed. Sanjaya obviously got the sympathy vote and apparently Antonella’s getting enough attention for her racy photos to gain votes.

I can’t imagine it’s fixed. The problem I think comes in that there are two types of voting. There’s “vote for the person you like the most” where your Lakisha’s get their votes. And then there’s “vote for the vulnerable person you don’t want to go home” tied with the “vote for the worst” people. When you’re down to the top 8 people it’s pretty easy to identify the worst person and the couple of people above the worst person so that you can vote for the people who are vulnerable but don’t deserve to go home. When there are 20 and 24 people though it becomes a lot harder to pick those people out (Your Leslies and your Nicholases). People know the Sanjayas Antonellas are bad but there are some people who are going to vote for them anyway. The trouble is that people can’t at this stage pick out the Leslie-types who are borderline but deserve to stick around another week.
