Area high school QB nominated for prestigious award

Congratulations to Badin High School senior Luke Wurzelbacher for being nominated for the “That’s My Boy” award from the Greater Cincinnati chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame.

Following is a press release from the school:

Badin High School senior quarterback Luke Wurzelbacher has joined the list of Rams football players nominated for the annual “That’s My Boy” award, given annually by the Greater Cincinnati chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame.

It is considered the top award available to high school football players in the area.

“Luke had a terrific career in the Badin football program,’’ said head football coach Bill Tenore. “He was an excellent player, and a great young man to coach. We were very blessed to have him on our team.”

Luke is the son of Dale and Julie Wurzelbacher of Ross and a graduate of St. Joseph School. He rarely missed a down for the Rams this past season - as the quarterback on offense, a safety on defense, the punter, handling the kickoffs and holding on extra points.

“I’m really honored. It’s a thrill to be nominated,’’ Wurzelbacher said. “I can’t really believe it - it’s just that special of a thing.”

Wurzelbacher was named the All-Purpose Player of the Year in the Greater Catholic League Central Division, as well as the Punter of the Year. He was first team all-area by the Hamilton JournalNews. Badin finished the season 6-4, winning the league title, and just missed out on a playoff berth.

“I just enjoyed everything about it,’’ Wurzelbacher said of his senior season. “I was doing what I loved with my friends, people that I love. The whole experience was great.

“I remember so many things,” he added, “but one thing I’ll never forget is after the last game (a 31-8 win over McNicholas), just being out on the field with the players, the students, the coaches, the parents. That was special.”

Wurzelbacher was slated to play tight end and wide receiver on offense for the Rams, but a pre-season injury to the first-string quarterback thrust him into the spotlight. He was up to the challenge.

“I wasn’t expecting it,’’ he nodded, “but the team needed me and I was glad to fill in.”

Ten players from Southwest Ohio have been nominated for the “That’s My Boy” award, which has been presented each year since 1962. The Southwest Ohio Football Coaches Association oversees the nominations, which represent football excellence, academic performance and involvement in extracurricular activities.

Wurzelbacher is the seventh Badin football player nominated in the past eight years, including Jon Hufford ’05, Andy Spaeth ’06, Matt Frankey ’07, Nate Jackson ’08, Zach Toerner ’09 and Matt Shamp ’10. Frankey was the award winner in 2007.

Luke is the last of four Wurzelbacher children to come through Badin High School. As good of a football player as he is, he is focusing on playing baseball in college. He is the starting shortstop in Badin’s high-profile baseball program, but has not made a college decision as yet.

The “That’s My Boy” awards dinner is set for Tuesday, Feb. 28, at 7 p.m. in the Presidential Ballroom of the Westin Hotel in downtown Cincinnati. Butch Jones, the head football coach at the University of Cincinnati, will be the keynote speaker.
